Frontier Wargaming Paint Case: bit.ly/paint-case
Thanks for sponsoring this video, Frontier Wargaming!
If you're a beginner and you're looking to dive into the world of miniatures, you need a few things. Among those things is a solid core of paints. In this video, Jon goes over all the biggest brands and their starter sets and finds which one is the best for you.
OUR RECOMMENDATION:
Vallejo: geni.us/EVbUn
OTHERS WE REVIEWED:
Reaper: geni.us/Gd69gX
While Jon didn't like the HD pants in this reaper set, the core colors set comes with only core colors (no HD paints). Based on my experience with Reaper MSP paints, I can recommend this set if you were interested in the thinner dilution.
Reaper Core Colors: geni.us/yY434m
Army Painter: geni.us/vG3GI
Games Workshop:
This is what was available at the time of this review: www.games-work...

@Miniac *Buff is an actual thing.* "Buff" is the color of "buff leather", i.e., rawhide; also refered to simply as "buff". For example, a "buff coat", is a coat made of buff. In fact, buff is historically the most common form of hide or so-called "leather". Tanning the hide was prohibitively expensive for most uses until the invention of chrome tanning in the industrial age.

Joseph Orme - You might want to consider the Vallejo “Game Color” starter set as well, it’s really good for Fantasy types of miniatures (colors wise). I wish they would’ve included that starter set as well in the review. I will say this, they tend to be a little thinner than the Model color set, but this isn’t a bad thing at all. Coverage is still good and great metallics.

My Vallejo set arrived earlier today and I feel pretty good about it. Especially now, after stumbling upon this review. I've been away from miniature painting since the mid 90s and decided to get back into it. Back in the 80s and early 90s, there weren't many paint choices, so I used to use Testors Model paint. About the time I stopped painting was when the mini specific paints began to pop up and be easier to find. I"m really looking forward to jumping back into this hobby. Thank you for confirming that I made a good starter set choice.

I really like both the Vallejo and Army Painter sets. I believe that a lot of the problems people are having with the consistency of the paints can be improved by thinning with an airbrush flow improver and placing small bearing balls in the pots for better mixing of the paints with their mediums when shaking before use.

I am slowly switching from GW to Scale 75, however listening to the experience of all the great youtubers out there, I understood that there is no such thing as a silver bullet. There is no specific brand that is THE BEST. Each one produces some particular color that are above many competitors, for example Vallejo's metallics, GW reds and yellows, Scale 75 inks, P3 Arcane blue and Necrotite green, Army Painters wash system, etc. etc. etc. However as a completely new painter, I find that the GW's system, based on base, wash and layer, is the best one to get into the hobby, there are tons of examples, for almost every miniature they produce, and it easy to getting started!

My advice for Scale 75 paints: Pull off the nozzle, stir with cocktail stick/tooth pick, add 2-3 drops of airbrush thinner, add a couple of agitators then shake like hell. If you don't then you can shake for an hour and then you'll just squeeze out blobby gel.
@ArynCrinn
@ArynCrinn 5 жыл бұрын
Just don't use Scale75s own agitators. I had put them in all of mine, finishing with the metallics. Within about a month, the agitators in the metallics had already started rusting away. I've since gone back to some of the non-metallic S75 paints I first started putting agitators in several months earlier, and have found that while they have generally fared better, they're still rusting. I haven't tried AMMO of MIG agitators in Scale 75, but I do have some Ammo of Mig paints which came with them included, and they've been completely fine after about 3 years or so sitting on my desk.

I got that set about a year ago and I love it. Like Jon said about the painting guide from the Army Painter set, the Reaper set comes with a fairly nice 'Get started with painting' guide that takes you from a fairly basic skeleton, to more complex models and techniques (models included). My only problem with it are the weak metallic colors; I didn't have any trouble getting them out of the bottle, but trouble with their coverage..

I'm surprised too. It has paints, minis, and a how-to guide. My mom just got one for herself on my recommendation. I don't think there is a better starter set, just due to the how-to guides. The Vallejo set looks great; I may have to pick it up to play with their line more... but it doesn't have the user manual. Not what I would start Mom with while I'm not there as a guide. If an instructor or favorite video was recommended... maybe. As for green paint commentary - I dunno what video-friend is talking about. Greens are all over the place on opacity. I have some S75 Fantasy & Games ones that have some of the worst coverage ever, and some Reaper that go on perfectly. Some Reaper greens don't. The uniting factor in the goodness was the neon-ness of the green. I think that bright saturated greens are like oranges, regardless of brand. Low saturation greens and darker greens rarely are a problem.

Yup, been into the hobby for going on 3 years now and it took me forever to pull the trigger on a Vallejo set, the medieval color line, and it has become, by far, my favorite range when painting up the plethora of Zombicide figures in my queue and great bang for the buck value

I have to say that I switched to Army Painter from Citadel and I really enjoy the Army Painter range of paints. However Vallejo is definitely the king of the bunch for sure in overall quality. If Vallejo had some kinda pamphlet like Army Painter comes with, it'd be the gold standard.

I've been watching videos about learning to paint, what paint to buy, etc. all night, and this is by far the best and most informative video I've seen. Thank you so much! This makes my choice for what to buy very simple, and that is super nice when trying to dive into such a daunting hobby like 40k.

I am a complete newb to this hobby. I purchased all the sets except scale 75 prior to even seeing this video. And I would agree that the Vallejo set is top notch. However, the analysis of the Scale 75 paint intrigues me and I think I am going to add this to my growing number of paints, just to try and master it and hopefully one day be as good as either Ninjon or Miniac!!

tl;dr: buy The Army Painter Starter Set, get a good brush, buy a spray varnish, learn to mix colours and get started! the rest comes with time. -.-.- bought the TAP starter set. it's fair priced, gives you all the colours you need to start with, a brush (could be better. I use it for mixing or painting larger areas. not for details, as it's not holding a good tip), but if you buy a decent one, you're set. And you actually get a step by step instruction manual. No other company so far does that. If you're completely new to the hobby, that's what sets you back the most: the lack of instruction. (I don't recommend dipping though, as it is quite a messy technique and you have no control of where the shade is going to end. brush it on.) I like the limited range of basic colours and the one shade. would I like to have Dark Tone instead of Strong tone? no, as I find Dark Tone too dark. opacity of the paints is okay, kinda like you said in the video. what I had the most trouble with was indeed the yellow (again, as stated in the video). it needed a couple more layers to cover decently against my expectations, and I was about to scrape it off and restart. still it was less than with GW's Sunburst Yellow (old GW colour range), which was a pain in the rear at any time. PRO TIP: thin your yellow, paint on one layer, and LET. IT. DRY! repeat with second, third, and so on layers, until it covers nicely. Patience is a virtue in this hobby, folks! Get used to it! limited range of colours means: Learn To Mix Your Colours! e.g.: the flesh colour was too pink for my taste, so I added a bit of brown, red, yellow, green and blue: voila! desired flesh tone. overall, the paints are a good start, to begin with the hobby. over time, your paint range will grow and consist of various brands and types. for example, I use oil paints to create my own washes, or acrylic paints (Golden or Schmincke) from the local artist shop, when I need a large amount of one specific colour, too costly to mix with Vallejo or any other brand. You get lots of thinning mediums, glaze mediums, varnishes, retardents, etc. which requires a lot of testing, reading reviews, asking other painters, but most of the time testing it yourself. this is my two cents, see you on the flip side.

I loved this review. And in my experience, I agree with everything you said. But I do have something to add. When I first started, I picked up the Reaper "LEARN TO PAINT" sets (there were two Core skills and Layer up). Each came with 3 minis, 2 brushes, 11 paints, and a booklet with some instructions on miniature painting. One had the absolute basic techniques (Base coats, washing, dry brushing) and the other had more advanced techniques (more detailed base coat layering, shadowing, highlighting, glazing and lining). And the latter came with an empty dropper bottle for water. I have never seen the "starter kit" that you got, and I am glad I didn't get that one. That one sounds more like a product sampler than a kit that's good for beginners. In my Reaper LTP kits, all of their paints were of the first type you mentioned. The pre-thinned layer-ready variety of paint. And just like you said, eventually I outgrew them. sort of. Reaper also has a thicker variety of paints, too, which I learned when i started buying more colors. The best thing about Reaper is that they're more consistently matte in my experience compared to other companies. My biggest gripes about Reaper is that they separate a lot easier than companies like Vallejo or GW, and even the thicker paints are more watery than I like. That said, while Vallejo has become one of my favorite paints to use in the long run, reaper's got some great variety for beginners, especially with their "triad system" selling paint in 3 bottle sets meant for base coat, shadow, and highlight. I personally can recommend the Reaper "LEARN TO PAINT" sets for absolute beginners. Even novices who have started getting into the swing of things. Especially as a gift. I appreciated them so much. And their instruction booklets helped as well. Absolutely wonderful. With everything included, it helped me decide that I liked this hobby without having to do a huge buy-in (i got my first one for like $30, which you can't beat for what you get.) But yeah. If you buy the paints, brushes, and minis separately, and learn through youtube or other places, Vallejo paints is definitely the way to go. Better quality paints, best variety, and great price, too.

I started with the Reaper learn to paint set, and overall I thought it was a neat experience. After that I started buying Citadel paints because those are the only paints available at my LGS, but after this video I think I'll give Vallejo another chance. Maybe grab that big kit. I have a couple of their paints that I found at a store when travelling, and they seemed pretty good. I just prefer pots. When you use a dropper bottle (at least, this is my experience with the Reaper paints), they never seem to balance pressure because paint is caught in the nozzle, so when you take the cap off, sometimes a paint bubble pops and makes a mess. Edit now that I'm home from work and can type more: That Reaper core set linked in the description is the exact set I started with, and at the time I thought it was an ok set, but after trying some Vallejo, I would recommend that set, personally. I did like that the Reaper set came with really nice instructions, but you can just download those PDFs if you really want them. The biggest detractor to the core set was the lack of variety, which Jon touched on and the really bad metallics you get, which are just crappy analogs of Citadel Leadbelcher and Stormholst Silver. After thinking about it, I'm probably getting the Vallejo set for myself for Christmas. It's got a few colors that I don't have, and I'm very interested in how they perform compared to Reaper (which I'm not a huge fan of because of consistency and coverage) and Citadel (which is my main paint because of the aforementioned availability).

Vallejo. I've recently gotten into painting, mainly because of 40k lore. But my friend who's been painting a lot longer than I have gave me GW and Vallejo to try both out. In the end I chose Vallejo and have been amassing a large collection of them. Currently making a Guardians of the Covenant squad with the metals I picked up and I must say, they look good even though I'm not.
