ODDBALL GALLERY - Keith Williams

This wood knot ball is made from 180 knot cut offs from my cabinet shop. It is basically a big knot ball or knot sphere. Although it may look like it, it is KNOT ART. This 19" Geodesic sphere is made by Keith Williams of ODDBALL GALLERY. As a fan of Buckminster Fuller and the geodesic dome, this scrap wood project is a tribute to the design.

There's a certain God-like creativity in this project. We should all be pleased by the creation of beauty, but this is an example of pure creativity in that the creator takes something ordinarily discarded by the common craftsman and makes them into something wondrous to behold. Inspired work. Thanks!

Keith, your accuracy is so perfect! I noticed that the table saw sled has no stop block. How can you maintain such bevel accuracy on that first triangle cut? Are you able to maintain that accuracy on all 180 triangles by line of sight only?
@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams
@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams 4 жыл бұрын
The plastic template I used was a little oversize, and the marks i made were only for basic reference, The tablesaw cut only needed to be straight so the first mitre saw cut could use it for alignment. The third cut was the only one that needed the stop for accuracy.

Dolphin Shooter Basketball size is about as small as I can go with this layout. The problem is the triangles get a lot smaller. The knots would have to be the size of a dime. While preparing oak beams for a irish cottage ceiling, I filled all these knots and their holes with VERY rough chippings from the planing process. Its difficult to push them in with glue, especially when they are pointing into all directions (and they should!) because they want to expand again. you need to have a few mm on top since the glue contracts and you need a hump for planing again. So push and push it again and then fasten the clamps Once planed , the fibres pointing into all directions look very nice. but the waste of planing you push in should be at least 3mm wide and 5mm long to give it the character of timber from the roots and to look "natural". If well done, these parts are actually the highlight of those beams and give them character.

So...I have to ask: How did you figure out the degree of the bevels? Was it trial by error or was there a "paper and pencil" way for you to figure it out? BTW....really great work. Maybe one w/ thinner pc's and put a light inside that might glow a bit?
@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams
@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams 4 жыл бұрын
I found the formula for determining the side lengths of the triangles online. At that point I made a model using 1/8" hardboard. I was then able to measure the bevel angles and get a good guesstimate. There was still a lot of trial and error to fine tune those angles and figureing out how to assemble it all. I have since found other resources online for calculating the size and angle of the parts . This website has some good info. geo-dome.co.uk/3v_tool.asp

How did you EVER get the angles perfect enough for all that to fit together??

The Fish I built a lot of balls that were too ugly for the front side of the camera. After a couple years I got my system all figured out.

It looks nice, but why didn't you make it into a sphere?
@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams
@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams 4 жыл бұрын
Steve Garrison I just thought I would leave it faceted for a while. I can always throw it back on the lathe and sand it later. It actually took twice as long to sand the individual triangles than if I had sanded it smooth.

I am very interested in you process, I am a just a tinker at woodworking. Once you find the angle cut is it the same for any size?
@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams
@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the angles and bevels are the same. The small ball I build is a pentakis dodecahedron so it is a different layout.

''19" Geodesic sphere'' .. Is that the angle of the bevel on each of the triangles? I've been trying to figure it out..... (Great work & vids btw)

JaekRiel DGX 19” is the diameter the bevels are different for the hexagons and pentagons

@@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams Ok so, please forgive my stupid-ness on the subject, but...i just can't figure it out. So, are the bevel degree angles different for the pentagons and for the hexagons? And are either of them 19 degrees? in other words, what degree do they need to be cut to fill that 'gap' when you tape them together (if that makes sense) i just found your channel last night and i tried for hours to try and figure it out, but i am stupid when it comes to math.... (once again, the 'balls' are beautiful.....and umm...that didn't sound so weird in my head before i typed it... )

so it looks as though you rejected half of the knotty pieces. I'd be interested to see how this turned out had you rounded it on the lathe. Maybe a smaller piece is in the future?
@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams
@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams 4 жыл бұрын
shaukeki I sorted out anything bigger than 1.5” . I have plenty of knots left if I want to make a bigger ball, but not enough small knots. I normally always sand them smooth, I thought this one looked better with the flats.

Hey Gary, I don’t have a “how to “ video for this configuration. This ball and the big plywood ball are both truncated icosahedrons. They are made up of 20 hexagons and 12 pentagons. (Soccer ball) the hexagons and pentagons are just subsided into triangles to make it a little more round. Here is a link to a geo dome calculator, it will help get all the angles and side lengths. geo-dome.co.uk/3v_tool.asp

My next video will be the "how to" of a 5" diameter ball. Check out this website geo-dome.co.uk/3v_tool.asp They have a dome calculator. You just enter the radius you want and it will give you the triangle side lengths and dihedral angles. It is even color coded. This calculator is for domes but the sphere has the same angles.

@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams
@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams 4 жыл бұрын
BCRBCRBCRBCRBCRBCR The line was parallel to the outside edge of the triangle. The grain direction was kind of crazy and the edges of the triangles are very close to the same length. The line just made it easier to confirm that I was laying them out correctly. After a while they all looked the same and I was just trying to save some wear and tear on my brain.
