A perfect starting point. A full rigged ship of the line such as Victory. A frigate like Constitution or a schooner might seem attractive to the beginner. But l wonder just how many ship models have been left unfinished and thrown out due to builders biting off more than they can chew.

Thank you for making this video. I wanted to purchase this kit for my son and after seeing it I feel much better about buying it!

Nice touch having the Winslow Homer paintings at the end. I just built this. I am on a "working boat" path these days, mostly midwest/model shipways boats (crab skiff on deck). If you continue with these I would appreciate your noting what grade sand paper you use at various points...I struggle with which is the appropriate grade, esp for final painting.
@EZmodelingАй бұрын
In general, I use 100 grit for rough sanding, 400 grit for fine sanding before painting/staining. I am working on the 103 video and will provide a bit more explanations.

I just finished the model as far as the oars. Boy, was it difficult to chamfer the handles out, then shape the oars, LOL! Only had to scratch build two seats, so that’s good. It’s too cold now and too late to paint and put the rope on. Transom holes are too small for it anyway, so I’ll need to drill them out. Looking forward to the pram and the smack!

This dory is also a swampscott dory from the town where these were designed and made by my family ! There are 3 types of them " a gunning dory, sailing dory ,And a tomb stone dory " this is the tomb stone because the stern resembles a tomb stone ! The gunning dory also called the double end because it had a bow on both ends ! And were the back bone of the whaleing industry We have the original half hulls still and each of the real boats as well ! You can see some of them in museums such as the new Bedford whaling museum, Peabody Essex in salem massachusetts

I’m currently building this. I’ve noticed that the bottom cleat outlines are shorter than the laser cut edges of the boat bottom. Should I be cutting the 1/8 strip to the edges of the bottom instead? Also, I’m sure glad you recorded the frame buildup. It’s not apparent in the book exactly how to position the 2 halves. Your video showed it perfectly.
@EZmodeling9 ай бұрын
Good question, Ross. I did NOT cut to edges. After researching and viewing a schematic of the grand dory from Wooden Boat museum, I think the outlines are right. The cleats were NOT touching the planks

Thanks for this! I’m a plastic military modeler about to try this as my first wooden model. 2 questions: first, does airbrushed paint work well on wood? Second, can you suggest any simple weathering techniques so it looks less like it was just brought home from a boat store?
@EZmodeling8 ай бұрын
Hi John, airbrushed paint work very well on the wood. Especially for some boat like Andrea Gail boat. You can do simple dry brushing weathering to them just like I did on the black Pearl. I am sure you can do weathering like chipping and winter snow to the armored vehicles on them too. There are lot of weathering resources at Ship of Scale and Modelshipworld websites. Good luck building!

Another thing. I just realized that curved board that gets glue to the inside of the transom is a bit oversized (a later shot @6:15 shows it fitting inside the hull at the top). I assume it’s okay to trim the sides to be parallel to the edges of the transom. I made sure I stayed within the glue line and the holes lined up.
@EZmodeling9 ай бұрын
Yes. I trimmed/sanded the sides down in order to glue the upper plank. instruction page 14 photo 1 showed it clearly.

Do the garboard planks overlap or just touch each other. Do the 45 degree bevels match against the 45 degree bevel of the plank below or above it ?
@EZmodeling10 ай бұрын
I had 45 degree bevels for the boat bottom four garboard planks (2 E's and 2 F's). Then the planks overlapped just enough to cover the 45 degree bevels. The instructions may provide better clarification. Good luck building!

Do you glue the strakes while wet to the frame?
@EZmodeling8 ай бұрын
Yes, I did glue while wet. The moisture helped preventing wood splintering if you wanted to use some pins to hold the boards down.

Nice video! Thanks. I think the boat should not be painted. The wood texture is beautiful and more connecting.

@@EZmodeling I purchased the kit (the 3-kits combo). I am building the Dory. The instructions also talked about Dory boat's history and why it was painted in Ochre Yellow (for visibility in the sea). My wife told me that her grandfather did fishing in a dory. So, I am carefully building this kit in the memory of her grandfather. We will put it on a display in the living room with a little writeup next to it. P.S. There are challenges involved in building the kit. One has to think twice before gluing! Thank you for the video again!!

I cannot round the thole pins. So small, I can’t do it without breaking them. Advice ? Also the the handle on the oars is too small for me to round . It breaks. Help?
@EZmodeling9 ай бұрын
The thole pins, try to drill the holes a bit bigger. The oar handles, try use a needle file. do not need to be perfect rounding, at least mine are not. The instructions maybe helpful too. Good luck

Do you have a glass or plexiglass cover on the work surface to protect the pad?
