I remember years ago my dad left the door cracked open like that after he loaded up the stove with some small chunks of sugar maple. Phone rang and he got distracted, he remembered and came back about 20 minutes later and the chimney flange on the stove was cherry red and the flue temperature was over 1000F. He never got distracted again after that haha

Thanks for the tips. Back in the 70s and 80s my dad pretty much taught us how to run wood burner. He would bring home coal from the mine to help the heat and hold fire overnight. I just had to relearn how to burn wood because woodstoves are different. The larger pieces chokes off air so I have to split it again to sizes that I know will work. My neighbor stopped by yesterday, and he complimented me on how nice it felt in room. Thanks again for the tips.

Congrats on your 3rd year. A very noble undertaking. My third year in the hollow, fully on grid, cars pass by 24/7 going 35 to 45 mph. Money is disappearing to the electric,gas,water companies. Real estate taxes, school taxes, county taxes are draining the meager stash of money that i squirreled away. But hey... there is a beautiful hill of trees across the road, and there is a very steep hill of trees behind the house/shack. Perfect in a way 😉 Imperfect in other ways. I strive for perfection in many things like getting the bolt to fit perfectly. But when things break i fix them the best i can which is usually never perfect. Satisfaction comes in all colors. ✅♻️🪘❄️🪵🪓

Wood stove cookin' is some of the best eatin' I've ever had! Stoves are our only heat source at my family place too, and I love how wood heat just soaks right thru yer bones. Plus, it gives me an excuse to go rippin with my dad and our power saws in the woods! Lots of dead ash trees the last few years in these parts. Love, Andrewski✊

I have had fire places, stove inserts, and stand alone wood stoves, over the years, and you my friend have hit the nail on its head! I have 2 stoves in the house as we speak, when we were without power for 3 weeks after hurricane Sandy, we had heat and were able to cook from the stove! I will never be without one again! And yes I have been to the court house to keep them! And I firmly believe that every house should have one regardless of location! Just think about how much easier Texas would have had it a few years back, when the they got hit with that extreme cold front for a few weeks! While I primarily burn wood, I have also placed oil lamps inside the burn box to help bring a little heat and maintain a draft ( plus it helps to get rid of the cooking oils!

I often have to resplit wood that I buy, because it's too big and burns too slow. When I split it, I split it small. Knotty chunks, crotches, etc I'll leave big and use for base logs, but I prefer the fuel pieces to be small. It just makes for a better burn. I'm blessed with a wide variety of species, so I can vary the burn by choosing what species to put on. Want it slower? Throw on the oak, or Beech, or locust. Want things to brighten up? Add some soft maple, poplar, or spruce. Imo, Ash and Sugar Maple are just about right. Cherry, walnut, and birch are right in the middle of the road, too. I burn outdoors, but placement works just like you showed us there, too. Even though it's out in the open air, you still need airspace in between pieces. Cleaning out the ashes regularly helps too- so air can get underneath it.

Yeah the odd pieces (crotches that didn't split, weird cuts, short cuts that won't stack, any cookies, etc...) you get with a delivery I put aside and I either burn first just because they're awkward to deal with or I save them for one last odd piece to throw in at night before I go to bed. If you stack using holzhausens then these are great to throw into the middle of the circle.

I know. I’m 74, grew up in a stone farm house, wood burning stove in kitchen, wood/coal furnace in cellar, steam radiators. Split a lot of wood growing up. My dad was frugal with the coal. I’ve never regretted it.

Spot on re the log size! I must admit I've always marvelled at the size of some of your logs out there. I'm in Norway and I need my wood a bit smaller. Of course a few bigger logs are great for later, once the fire has a good bed, but most of it I like up to 4" or so. Best thing I recon is to get the wood in the house early. We have a two part store next to the fire, so the wood is in the house at least 2/3 days before burning. Stay well buddy 🙂

We live close to the beach on the ca/or border and we have a older style wood stove but man that thing cranks. 8' away is a 18000 btu heat pump and the wood stove is about 10 time more powerful. One of our funnest things we do is getting firewood and I love dropping trees, thanks Buckin for the tips.

I do a similar thing when stacking. 10 faces of 2 year old wood, one face of year old, still a bit damp at 18 %, and a couple of faces of three year old. Feeding the dragon for over 40 years now and that fellas always hungry. Mix as nessary to get the heat level you need.

I want all my wood packed as tight as possible. Burns longer that way. If I am starting a fire sure to get it going. But once it's hot I load it as tight as possible. I load North and South. Air goes between it fine and it burns from the glass back. My stove has a cat and burns that smoke. No problem keeping that stove hot or cool with just the air control. I leave my door closed after I first start it. Wood is usually split and stacked in the shed three (sometimes two) years before I burn it. Oh I see your saying if your struggling with a down draft and trying to get started .

I've got a wood stove insert, and it's the damndest thing. I can't find any information about it on the internet. The "floor" of the thing partially blocks the little intake vents, and it has a grate in it like a fireplace. But once you get it going it'll get the house hot. It was here when I bought the house.

Got an Enerzone stove (made in Canada 💪) that's got a slider vent so I can control airflow when it's sealed burns so hot sometimes singes my hair when loading more wood 🔥🥵

Since you are getting a bit older and have some injuries to recover from, maybe you can make yourself some wood boxes/bins that you can load into your Merc or Ford and stack into those and unload with your forklift, then unload into your woodshed and wham, bam...BBR is done for the year and only handled the wood 3 times instead of your 12 times before you burn it! Nothing wrong with some larger pieces of wood either...long burn and not overbearing with heat---gOOD TIPS on some of your motosierra cadena vids, but the side stuff can be redundant [straight shooting]. Keep kicking a$$!

Great advice!! So yesterday l commented and said that "l assume everyone currently on the list for an axe would get one once they come out." I am not sure where the disconnect was between my brain and fingers but that was supposed to say, "l assume everyone currently on the list will NOT be getting one immediately after they are released. Do you have a rough estimate of how long the wait will be once they're become available?" (Like if l get on the list this week, l can expect to wait roughly x amount of time once they are released to get mine.) With quality, hand made, products it takes time to make them so l expect there too be a wait. I am looking forward to get one of these axes, and am thankful that you are putting in all the R&D before you sell something. That says a lot about your character! We’re on our second season with our freestanding Buck 81 wood heater. The instructions say not to place the heater in a “sleeping room “ so being the Mississippi redneck that I am, I had it installed in the master bedroom. We love it. Got all the right monitors installed along with proper fire equipment. One thing we have learned to do is to place a pot of water on the stove with a big dab of Vick’s Vapor Rub floating in it. Keeps the sinuses healthy. 👍👍

Funny… I watched this video last night. We are 12years 100% wood heat here in the GVRD and for the first time I had to preheat my flue with paper and kindling in my regency 2400 insert. Usually I just toss some sticks on the coal bed from the night before and it lights up in a few mins…there was really damp, cold, dense air outside this morning! really weird!
