Ash Bowl with Sapele Dowels. This was a remake of a similar bowl that I made last year. The previous bowl didn't glue very well, as I think that the dowels were too tight, so this time I allowed more room for glue. Everything held well, but there were a few gaps that needed refining.
This bowl looks really nice from a distance, but up close some of the gluing could have been better! All in all, another satisfying project. Thanks for watching.

Nice. Just cut down a dead ash tree, can't wait to try turning it. Based on the sound in your video, it must be pretty hard.

If there was a gap, I thought it would be better to pour resin and press-fit than Gorilla Glue. I thought it would be interesting to leave more space between the wood and the resin to color it.

Sounds like a great idea. If I repeat this in the future, I might well try resin. Cheers 👍

Here's a thought. When you fill gaps, push in some sawdust with the glue. It will be strong and nearly invisible

Да, просто много ми харесва !!! Нещо на пръв поглед не особено сложно, стига обаче да знаеш как да го постигнеш.В това е и част от таланта, да имаш въображение да можеш да видиш крайния резултат, преди да си стигнал до него.

Good job ! I made the same with ash and yew dowels andt started with thinner parts to avoid wasting but had some problems with my short dowels and maybe the glue , had to reposition some and restart on the lathe : the whole must be thick enough to have the dowels sitting properly in place , anyway , that idea was worth trying !

Very cool! Maybe bigger dowels, but rough them up with some 60 grit sandpaper before. Then the glue that gets doesn’t get pushed out has a bit more to grip? Either way I love it!

I have to commend you for coming up with some great concepts, but you seem guilty of some poorly-considered execution of those concepts - specifically in your set-ups. Your pine herringbone bowl also comes to mind: you took a piece of off-the shelf lumber, and expected it to fit together seamlessly, without planing or jointing. I knew you would have issues with this one as soon as I saw how easily those sapele pieces slid into the holes. You needed to size those holes better (better bit selection) or turn the dowel on your lathe to fit snugly into whatever size hole you were best able to drill for it. I like what you're doing - which is why I'd like to see you do it better. Unless you're just a 'shoulda/woulda/coulda' kind of guy....

Thanks. I genuinely appreciate the comments. The ideas are bouncing all around my head, but yes, the production of the blanks before the lathe could do with refining. I was torn in two minds with how to fix the Sapele, as the last time I made one like this the fit was too snug and the glue was pushed out, so the dowels worked free. I'm not going to give up on this concept, but I really need to apply what has been learned. Thank you again for the support 😎👍
@opabinnier
@opabinnier 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that was never going to work; there's no effective way of securely gluing dowels into holes like this. It's a non starter. Who gave you the idea? Don't listen to them again.
