As always, a beautiful and certainly challenging piece. I really like how you "roll with the punches" whenever something, such as the color gives you trouble, and you still manage to make something great. As I told you before, take a cue from a cat, and look directly at the camera when the dye or whatever doesn't cooperate, and say, "I meant to do that." Please keep up the great work, your videos are a joy to watch.

Can't remember if I have seen it done, but I'm curious what would happen if you just put drops of ink/dye in clear resin and let it set up? Almost like the color/drop would suspend? I may be wrong but I think the 2:1 is measured by the pumps included, not by weight. So pouring into container using a scale may have been the source of improper curing. Just my 2 cents. beautiful creation though
@MoonpieCreations
@MoonpieCreations 5 жыл бұрын

Have you considered the fact your resin might've overheated while turning? I've had it happen before, when I've turned a piece for too long without cooling in between and it starts to soften and become rubbery. Sometimes it hardens back up if it cools, but sometimes it never hardens back up completely. Other than that, that's a nice bowl, I love the grain on the bottom!
@MoonpieCreations
@MoonpieCreations 4 жыл бұрын
I did not consider that, but after re-watching the video I definitely did not mix correctly. I kept the ring to see if it ever hardens back up. lol Ken

Nice save and finish. Just over 2kg in resin, scrapped most of it off. Maybe a way to save resin, pour sawdust &/or resin shavings into the sides that way when you have to use resin you'll only need a bare minimum. On the other hand, i bet Total Boat love you.. ☺☺☺☺☺☺
@MoonpieCreations
@MoonpieCreations 5 жыл бұрын
I try to save resin every bowl. I put a large piece of pine in the middle. That saved tons of resin. I alos started cutting my blanks to the same size as the bucket. I can make four or five bowls per gallon now. Depending on the bowl of course. TB like me? I hope so, they are a pretty awesome company and I love there resin. Ken

Lovely grain; it looks like a night sky in a canyon. Wasn’t it Bob Ross, the ‘happy trees’ guy, who said there are no accidents? That look was meant to be. Besides, if you adjust it for size, that strip you cut off can be made into a nice headband for you! Was wondering - if you layer your pours, while still wet, can you go back in with a dowel and poke it to make it look like what you did with colored sand as a kid? Have that same effect, I mean? That’d be cool...
@MoonpieCreations

I wonder if you sprayed some of that accelerant on that soft part, whether it would have hardened. If resin is partly cured, it should be possible to finish the cure. But you need the right chemical to make that happen. You might also try heating it. Not too hot because it will smoke. But maybe around 125° or so. Just hot enough to activate the hardening agent.

The ring I cut off I kept to see how long it took to get hard. Well it took just over a month for it to harden. I'm not sure what you could do, but your suggestions are intriguing. Thanks for the watch and comment. Ken

@@MoonpieCreations If it did eventually harden, then this indicates that there was at least some hardening agent in it. Normally resin would stay gooey forever if there was no hardening agent in it. The exception might be, for example, a UV cure, which will eventually harden regardless. I think heat would have sped it up quite a bit. One hour in the oven (not so hot that it will smoke) could easily equal 1 month at ambient temperature. Even a space heater or a hair blow dryer might do it. (Don't light anything on fire). You could also do a test. Take a small amount of resin and intentionally add an insufficient amount of hardener to it. Maybe 1/4 the normal amount of hardener. Stir normally. Set half aside as a control. Then do your oven test on the other half. Then compare the oven versus the non-oven. Note that slow cure resin will become fast cure resin if you use too much hardener or if you heat it. Most of the time I would suppose you don't want that.

You could make a "Flash" bowl with, from bottom to top; red, green, red, blue and red. Obviously a bunch of pours and probably just about impossible but hell... why not?

I like the bowls better without a wide lip of resin. I'd rather see how the resin has filled the voids in the wood than look at a rim of plastic.

A ton of wasted resin? Not really. I filled the bowl with a pine filler. The top I cut off was not thrown away. The resin that did get turned off it was it take to make the piece. I'm open to suggestionsto further cut the wasted resin. Thanks for commenting. Ken
