The bowl looks great Mike, that's a good effect. When you mentioned using colour that made me think, you could put one colour on first, then the hot glue and spray over the top like you did with this one. Then when you peel off the glue you would have a different colour showing through.

We used this technique back in the 70s using rubber cement on paper or canvas with inks and paints. It's interesting to see the "new" techniques coming back and being applied to different media. Looks great! Try red on the whole surface-could be a dye- before the glue, then the glue, then the black (or any other combination of colors in pairs, or repeat the process for multi-colored string effects. The options and effects are endless. Thanks for sharing, --Joe

+Joseph Scarborough Hi Joe, I always think that things come full circle....then we start at the beginning again. This idea is not mine originally of course, but it's great fun, and very effective. The colours you mentioned are exactly what I'm going to try, and see how the base colour stands up to the glue heat, I think it will work out just fine.....hopefully. Take care, and thanks for watching Mike
@joescarborough1
@joescarborough1 8 жыл бұрын
+Mike Waldt If you're going to use a surface finish, try a test piece first to see if the hot glue pulls the base finish off. A dye would not come off for sure and would let some of the grain show through. Just a thought. Hope you'll share the results of your next experiment. Cheers, --Joe

Super video Mike. The piece looks amazing. I paid to see a woodturning demo recently and it wasn't good to say the least. The guy hardly spoke, he turned something quite simple and gave no explanation of his technique etc. Basically it was just sat watching some guy doing some turning for two hours. I don't want to knock him really, but when you, and all the other fantastic woodturners on KZbin share things like this for free. We are very lucky.

A stunning beauty! Belongs in a gallery for sure. I wonder what type of undercoat might stand up to the heat and adhesion of the glue such that there could be a complimentary color rather than the natural wood color in the swirls...two varieties, so to speak.

Wow kept us in suspense for so long, really worth the wait.The more I look at it the more it grows on you. I think the final side profile image you have makes the piece look really stunning. Glad you didn't do the inside as it would have been an over kill. Just one extra option, you could use this process to create more of a wide border on the outside rather than the whole base.Great work and thanks for the video. Well done!

+Paul Lockwood Lol Paul - glad you liked the end result. This was just to show a very basic and easy way to use the glue to create an effect. Nice effect. There must be other batik processes that could be used to good effect on turned wood. Working on fabric you usually use an iron and brown paper to remove the wax - though this could be difficult on a curved piece of wood (!)

Mike, I put this in your channel comments as well, but I'm asking for help from anyone ... I cannot find the Chestnut Ebonising spray in the U.S. and it can't be shipped from the U.K. in spray form. Please, what other products will work for this technique that I might be able to use? Is there a colored lacquer or will spray paint work? I LOVE this technique!!! And it's simple enough that even I can do it!!! Thanks!

LilyBean I know it’s a little late and don’t know why he didn’t answer but if your still wondering I would use any surface paint system you care to. It’s just a top coat.

Very nice. Where can I get that ebonizing lacquer spray?
@MikeWaldt
@MikeWaldt 8 жыл бұрын
+Turntastic Wood Designs Thank you. The spray I used is by Chestnut Products here in the UK, I'm not sure if they can ship it overseas, but I would imagine a similar product could be found over your side of the pond :) Take care Mike

+Turntastic Wood Designs Not on this side of the pond, but it is a matte acrylic lacquer if that helps in your search. An automotive store may have that kind of spray. Translating UK products to US is tough sometimes. You can get a can from Amazon(UK) if you're willing to spend £60 ($87) a can to get it here. --Joe

Thank you Reece, I live in a village just South of Bedford, and Colin had been to Bedford Saw & Tool in Bedford, that have a turning club every Saturday morning. I must add I don't attend, for no other reason than lack of time :). I'll PM you with my mobile, and maybe we can arrange to meet one day soon :) Take care Mike

Mike, that makes me think of doing random "stems and leaves" with glue to decorate a bowl; I'm gonna give it a try...

That is just a lovely idea!! I was sure from the picture that you've sprayed the bowl black then used a colored hot glue (which I have some of, including some with glitter in them), but never did it occur to me to use the hot glue as a masking material, I am going to use that and play with it, you do know that :) Thank you for sharing this neat idea with us Mike!! :) Yuval.

great video man got a new subscriber coming from peter browns channel. if you want the hot glue to come off easier in the future pop the piece in the freezer the hot glue will loose its adhesion.
