Great demo Carl. Like you, I have only had the glue joint break once...and that was when the wood was wet! As you say, as long as the glue is really hot, the wood will give before the glue joint. Strangely enough I leaned that from you Sir, when I first started out! Thanks again Take care Mike

Thank you Mike, I don't turn much green wood so I had never tried it before. This is the only glue gun I've ever used so I didn't know there was a problem with the smaller ones. Until people started making comments. Take care, Carl

This was very useful and will probably prevent a load of people from getting a thump in the mouth with a lump of wet wood. I've never used a glue block but I'm going to now because I just got a box of beautiful burr Oak today so I don't want to waste that. Best Wishes, Brendan.

I have the small glue gun. I had the wood come off a couple of times in the begining. 1 Make sure your glue is very hot. 2 Use plenty of glue. The bigger gun let's you put out more glue quickly. 3 Use your tailstock to put pressure on the piece of wood. Don't be shy about the pressure. 4 Put some glue on the outside where your wood meets the glue block. 5 Don't use it until the glue turns white. Once i followed these steps I haven't had a piece of wood come off.

I still have a lot of glue sticks for the small glue gun but once they are gone i'm going to get the bigger gun. With the smaller glue gun you can only put 1 stick of glue through it and then you have to reload quickly. That means the glue is turning into a solid before you can get the next piece of glue to the melting stage. So i use the 2nd stick to go around the outside edge where the 2 pieces meet. Remember to let the glue cool long enough. I haven't had a problem since. Leonard

master carl will you go about showing how you (we) can make exact copies of a piece we already made, IE if I made a leg for a chair and I wanted 3 others >exactly< like the original.

Hi Justin, I usually cut a little bit into my piece but the glue will just peel off with your finger or a knife.

New guy to wood turning and tried the hot glue thing. Worked great.........but separating the glue block and the bowl was an entirely different matter. I did it just like you demonstrated- glue between the block and bowl base and glue around the block edges. Wow, thought I'd have to live with the two together! Heat gun and a strong knife blade finally did the trick. Anyone else doing this might want to consider a 1/2" hole through the glue block and maybe two intersecting cut channels across the block side that receives the glue. This would allow hot air to act on the glue holding the bowl. The channels would meet at the drilled hole. The bowl.....? I have a long way to go!

Hi Carl, As an experiment I tried gluing wet/green wood with Titebond original....it seems to work! The wood I tried was Sycamore, cut maybe 12 months back, but the piece I used for the experiment was from the middle of a 3 foot branch about 2 inches thick. The wood was just laying out in the yard, and when cut you can still feel it is wet. I stuck the pieces back together & clamped them for a couple of hours. I can now hit them with a mallet and they don't come apart. I'm not sure if this will work with ALL wet woods, but it's got to be worth a try for those of us who use waste blocks.

you can use a blow dryer to warm the glue and it will peal off very easy too!

Hey Carl, love your videos and work, they have taught me a ton about lathe work. I don't have the money for a nice self centering chuck for my lathe right now so to turn a vase I am thinking about screwing a waste block to a face plate then hot gluing my work piece to that. To get your work piece off the waste block do you just cut through the hot glue with a parting tool? or part off the work piece leaving the base behind still glued on? If the latter how do you clean the glue off?

Do hot glued joints last a long time like wood glue or is it just for short term applications like waste blocks? For example, if I use hot glue to join two or three small pieces of contrasting wood for a bottle stopper blank will it stay together indefinitely?

This is quite a while after this video posted, but thought I would put my two cents in..... I use hot glue all the time for faceplate turning. It works really well. I HAVE used it successfully on wet wood too, but there is a trick.....use a nice, hot blowdryer (or heat gun) to pre-heat the end of the wet wood before applying the glue. it only takes a minute or two. This seems to do two things 1) it dries the very end of the wet wood a long enough so the glue sticks better to the dry surface and 2)water/liquid/sap in the wood sucks up a lot of heat when the glue hits it so that the hot glue cools before it ever has a chance to adhere to the wood fibers. Heating up the end of the piece (and therefore the liquid in it) slows the cooling of the glue so it can get a grip on the fibers. try it. it works for me.

Great information on the hot glue gun Carl! I was just wondering how it compared with the CA glue gel for holding power? It is certainly a lot cheaper than the CA glue--specially when you get it from Ace Hardware---the closest hardware store to me for quick out and back trips

I have no luck with my square radius cutters in dry oak, all I can pull off of it is dust. I guess I know what I'll be searching for this morning. Can't wait until I can afford a few quality gouges.

Big Dan I think there's a big difference in quality in carbide cutters too. I get a nice clean cut with the Easy Wood rougher.
@Grizzydan
@Grizzydan 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks Carl, I've noticed that not all carbide cutters are equal, there are flat ones in every shape, but there are also ones with beveled edges that look like they'd be seriously aggressive. I can rough out pieces well but once it's round my R2 cutter becomes pretty much worthless. I'll give it a try at a faster speed and at a corrected tool rest height.
@Grizzydan
@Grizzydan 9 жыл бұрын
It was definitely tool rest height and speed. After adding weight to my stand I found I can reach much higher speeds with less vibration. Thanks again for the many great videos and awesome tips. I can always find what I'm looking for here on youtube between you and the other great turners.

I have an issue. I have watched how to make femispheres. I have no problem with turning them. My issue is this: Initially you start out with 2 blocks of wood, hot glued together. I cut the dimensions exactly the same. I make the slit in the middle so I can take them apart after turning them down. When hot glue is used, is there supposed to be void between the 2 blocks of wood? I really don't want the void there, and I can stay away from actually turning femispheres, because I am safety conscious, and I don't want to get a catch, if it can occur. When I use wood glue, I clamp the wood together and the wood becomes one piece, and I'm not concerned at all about the wood coming apart. This however, is different. I glue the 2 blocks together, and then turn the glued piece together, into 2 conical shapes. Once turned down, I take the 2 pieces apart, and wood glue them together, to make the femisphere. I guess my question is, can you use hot glue to glue 2 pieces of wood together, flush?
