I really like this bowl Mike. It feels good when you let the wood show you what form it takes on. You have to be mindful of the weak points and shape around them (it’s in your subconscious as we can see from the way you turn). It sometimes goes pear shaped when you hit a weak spot and you have to change the design. That’s the joy of turning burl's you never know. Well put together clip Mike. As always thanks for sharing and take care. David.

Mike, really nice job. Beautiful piece. Don't underestimate your abilities. Down deep inside your mind has a good idea of what it will turn out to be. I believe the mind will direct your hands to make what the finished product will be. I know when I build flies for fly fishing, sometimes I have no idea what to make that will be different than what I've done before. When I'm finished I'm amazed at what the finished product came out to be. Keep turning, amazing work.

Hello Mike, You certainly brought out the best in that most beautiful piece of wood. The bowl is a real stunner and I agree with you that the little fissures add to it. I have now reached the stage where I give as much attention to the base of a piece as I do to the rest. I think that must be progress for me especially when I look at some of the earlier items I turned. Many thanks and I look forward to your next video. With all good wishes, Alan.
@MikeWaldt11 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan, Thanks for the encouragement mate, I do love to see pieces au naturale, but alas it's not always possible. Like you, I pay a lot more attention to the bases now, as they are really just as important. In the early days I was for ever saying " I haven't finished the bottom yet".....and rarely did! Take care Mike

I think there is a hidden Zen Master inside of you. I still can't figure out, how in the world you can stay that calm in situations I would be nervous like I'd been at the first kiss of a girl. Talking about voices, I am personally glad the wood isn't talking to me, but I think all the voices inside my head do listen to the wood, as they seem to calm down while I'm turning (must be some great stories) . At this time my turnings are more like these chocolate eggs with toys inside: It's lots of fun discovering what comes out of it, without the negative side effect to the hips. As always, another great job. Take care, Peter

Excellent piece Mike. I do apply thin CA glue to the bark at some point during the turning to stabilize and hope that most stays in place. It does stain the wood if it drips to the bowl itself. I have tried to seal the bowl first with cellulose sealer and I am experimenting with other sealers but no clear results yet. I will let you know. Keep the videos coming!

Wow... I love burl bowls. You did a smashing job mate! I wasn't worried at the final cuts. You have a very gentle smooth cutting stroke. I have built fences and decks for years as a job and its not wood turning but it really pays to to be able to feel what direction wood will warp or have a sense when it's about to split. I have not so much as stood ex to a lathe since I was 15 years old but just bought one for my new garage! Can't afford lessons right now so I've been reading about a hundred books on turning and watching so far about a hundred hours of KZbin videos like yours. So it will take some trial and a lot of error but I think I'll be off to a better start than just winging it, thanks to you and guys like Carl. I think I M one of those people who see the potential in the wood first. That's the way it has been when I used to carve soap stone. For me the trick is imagine what it will be but hold it loosely in your mind and let the wood or stone have the final say. We'll see how true that holds for me and turning. Wish me luck! When I make my first successful bowl I may have a class ring made that says, "KZbin university class of 2013". Don't suppose you're selling that bowl? Sorry for the run on comment.
@MikeWaldt11 жыл бұрын
Thanks David, I too learned everything from books and KZbin, and a lot of practice and disasters ;). Out of interest, where are you based. I'm afraid my wife has laid claim to the bowl, and I am happy about that really, as only a precious few of my turnings end up in the house.....lol. Even my friends are politely saying...."NO MORE". I'll have to set up at a craft fair one day, to make some room for a bit more of my rubbish! Take care Mike

Well Mike.. You've done it again!! I am somewhat jealous of the fact that you can slow your lathe down that much!! Having the old pulley system, I am limited to around 800 rpm as my slow! Ah well... it just makes the TTW shake just a little bit more!! That is certainly a nice piece of wood and I am sure that somewhere in the back of your mind the shape of that bowl was already there just waiting to jump out... you just didn't know it yet!! I liked the commentary on the different gouges you used... I keep thinking I should do that too... but then I seem to use them all... most of the time... so it would be a video on... I used this one and that one and this one again... oh yeah.. .and there is a piece of wood here too! Maybe a couple of letters up in the corner so you can follow a guide to figure out what I am using!! And then you would get all the comments about "What are those letters about?" I guess it would make people leave more comments!!! I know what happens to my pieces when I want to go just that little bit closer... glad it didn't happen to you!! Nice job again and I am looking forward to the next one.... Larry

Great piece Mike. I also love the mystery of "What will the bowl look like in the end?". That's most of the fun. I've never turned the nib down at the end that far. I've tried a couple times with end result of launching the bowl and ruining it. Do you sand or anything between Danish oil coats.? I've got some Danish oil but have never used it on a finished bowl. I have a couple right now that I might try it on. Thanks for the videos and Happy New Year.
@MikeWaldt10 жыл бұрын
Mark Choitz Thanks Mark, I was lucky with the nib on this one, I must admit i thought I'd over cooked it! To date I only use Danish oil on bowls like this, with inclusions, and voids, and bark, as I think it feeds the wood and keeps it "moist", I will apply three or four coats over the same number of days, that's what I do, and isn't necessarily the right or only way. Happy New Year Mike

nice video,beautiful work,thank you! it would be nice for the begginers ( me !) to explain how you put-hold the wood on the headstock spindle in the beggining...just with a simple drive center? and most important...how you put-hold the bowl on the headstock spindle at the end of your work to clean the bottom of the bowl?

Thanks Alfred, I'm very happy that you like it. If I sent you a piece that size, I would have to sell my lathe to pay for the postage....lol Take care Mike

Its a bit of a problem where I live there is a very small community of turners and access to a shop that sells this kind of thing dont happen here. Also when are you getting power back in the shop I miss your videos

Alfred Ford That's a shame Alfred. I'm up and running in the shop now, and hopefully a new video soon, as I have still got some things to finish up. Take care Mike
