I turn a bowl in a bowl from London Plane. This is a fun project using a multi axis process to give it the look of a bowl sitting in another bowl.
The piece of London Plane was given to be by Ron from Creations By Ron
Finished with Zinsser Seal Coat and Zinsser Shellac
Acks Abrasive Paste and Acks Polishing Paste

That trick with the black crayon on your shape was so genius!! I love those 'simple' solutions! As I continued to watch the more continual examples of great clever woodworking came up! This video was sure a treat to watch thank you so much for sharing I loved the project and it turned out beautifully!

Thank you Perry. The black crayon comes from yeas of using it at work as a wood patternmaker. Used it on templates of all sizes and shapes on many turnings. I appreciate your comments and thanks for watching. Gary

Thank you, Gary, for reply! We are a good vintage year... You are simply amazing woodturning. I'm a retired forester, living in beautiful Palouse, near Pullman, WA. My dream is to have my own woodshop. I have all tools needed already in place. I have cutt some black locust trees in the property, a few the pieces will go to make vases. We will see... I plan to watch all your KZbin collection. Watch out for this competition! Hope we keep in touch. Be safe. Be well.

Thank you Mark! London Plane is a very interesting wood. That black crayon on trick is something I used at work when turning a shape on things like pump and valve body patterns. they had to be turned to the dimensions on the drawings and that was the best way to get them exact. Thanks for watcing, Gary

Than you David. You will find it is pretty easy to do. This was only the second one I have done. I do have plans for another. My son had a Cherry tree come down in the last snow we got. And my daughter in law so this bowl and as for one. So I will try and dry the wood and make one from their tree. So hopefully I will have that one "In the books soon" lol Glad you watch Phil, he is my favorite wood turner. Take care, Gary

Thank you Josh. Wow you tested your method in 2 hours. That is pretty darn good. The other one I left the bottom round and it sits fine. But having it on her desk and using it to put things in I think a flat bottom was a good choice she made. But my next turning I am not going to let her deicide what to do LOL. You will have to wait. Thank you very much Tom. The important thing to do is make the bottom as close to a perfect sphere as you can. This allows the piece to rotate and give a equal step around the part. Thanks for watching, Gary

Well done. I like this method using a ball-n-socket joint to do the offset turning. I’ve seen a couple of others that make it so complicated. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you very much Doug. Making it look complicated does not make it complicated and impossible. My goal is to make it look as simple as it is so others who want to can give it a try. Funny thing is a ball and socket joint is something we nothing to do it it's design. We just use it to our benefit. Thanks for watching, Gary

Well thank you Yiannis! I promise you my finish method is easy enough to learn. The main ingredient needed is practice and patience. Both are free LOL. I would be happy to explain in detail and have thought about doing a more detailed video on it. Take care my friend, Gary

Sir, after I retired from the Army, I have slowly worked toward a trial and error skill in woodworking. After 20 years of breaking things, I wanted to make things. I appreciate how you make creative ideas seem approachable. Thank you for the inspiration!

Thank You Gary...Fun adventure as always... I could not figure out what you were doing at first. Very inventive and it looks great. A real eyecatcher I like a lot. Something else Gary that I like is knowing when I watch your show I never have to use the mouse to X-out those annoying popups that drive me CRAZY, ha..TM

Hi Gary. Wonderful piece again. What I really like about your work is the explanation you do, apart from the piece itself, of course. Mentioning the rpm’s and the tool used helps an eternal beginner, like myself, a great deal. Your other video’s (on the tangent bowls and the jigs you’ve made) are very helpful. Many thanks for sharing! __Frank

300th LIKE! I remember the first one of these you did. Some how I remember the steps you went through a little differently but, must be about the same. This is just a very cool turning and one I find myself wanting to try. You've explained it all very well, professor! The London Plane Sycamore was a perfect choice for this piece and as always, you got a great finish on it. Great video, fun to watch. Keep'em coming, my friend! 😊 Phil

Cool, thanks Phil. I like the 300 number. It is the perfect bowling score. Not that I ever got one LOL. I think I probably did it different. I try to look for better ways to do things. Not sure if I did or not but it went well. For sure this London Plane sure worked nice for the effect It did take a nice finish as well. Pretty cool wood. Thanks for watching buddy! Gary
