I use a trimming from a large burl I turned last year.
I had a few choices on how to turn it and decided to use the Bowl From A Board method.
This worked out great and it has some wonderful burling it.
Finished with Zinsser Seal Coat and Zinsser Shelac
Acks Sanding Paste and Acks Polish Restoring Paste
Here is the video of the main piece of the burl:

Thank You Gary...It is always nice to see a beautiful piece of wood with NO cracks. From my perspective I am always loosing so very much because of rot or cracks. I always start with an idea than need to pare it down and work around the left over good wood. Your Burl looks wonderful (Burls usually do when aged correctly?). ... I love watching you make your ring bowls! I was thinking if using a couple strips of masking or duct tape on the back would be helpful in protecting the cut piece from bouncing around? ... Gary I LOVE that Burl bowl you created from a simple flat piece !!!.. Until next time...TM
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much TM! I sure is a nice piece of burl for sure. I have thought about having a backing piece behind it to keep them from flying off. Masking tape might do the job as well. I was concerned with the first ring cracking when it came loose. That is why I stopped in time to just pull it loose. Strange you can actually hear right before it is ready to come loose. And that is with my old and damaged ears LOL. Take care my friend, Gary

Gary, this is one beautiful bowl. What a great use for a gorgeous piece of burl. When I use my press, I found that by putting a wheel bearing (any autopart store) on top of the work, it is unmoved by the twisting action of the press as I tighten it. How I wish I had a piece of scrap like that!
@ThePapa1947

Thank you Josh! The end of my press not only adjust to the fit but it also is free spinning so I do not need a bearing on it. So I have not twisting issues to contend with. That is a good idea Ray. I have to find some pictures of what mind did. It was a TV stand , aquarium stand and a what ever stand for many years. It was a metal wood project in 1963. The metal part is long gone. Always happy to help a fellow soldier who severed where I did doing the same thing I did. Take care my friend, Gary

Great method for scratching a board into a bowl!! That ring clamp sure reminds me of the wine press my Grandfather used, back in the 50's!! Beautiful bowl, wonderful finish!! Would look great, on the table, filled with wine grapes!!!

Papa, As soon as you touched the sanding sealer to the wood I knew that another beautiful piece had just appeared on your lathe 😋. The finished burl board bowl looks even more amazing! The colors just pop like a high infield fly 🤩. Thank you. Keep the aspidistra flying! God bless, Paul

Thank you Paul, for sure that sealer works magic. It shows what is there but still hiding. For sure my favorite part. Pop like a infield fly. Dang I hated catching those. I found it harder than catching a line drive. Take care, Gary

Gary this is an Amazing bowl and working this way a person with little money could produce a bowl quit cheaply but still use what would be an expensive wood if using a solid blank

Fantastic project Gary. Simple, and elegant. The best kind. I really appreciate the lesson about drawing a line on your board before you cut it. That seems to really help the process, and improve the result. And once again, you have proved to all of us to SAVE EVERY PIECE! Of wood from projects, because they can come back to be beautiful. Thanks for the video, and thanks for the lesson. See you next week.
