Thank you Mike for an excellent review. Those of us who been with you for a long time know your reviews are totally impartial. I needed a table saw and as a result of the review you did I went on your recommendation and couldn't be more pleased. The great advantage for me with this product is that it will greatly reduce dust in my workshop. Consequently, I've just ordered some. I'm really fond of my healthy lungs and for the last couple of months have been using the Axminster respirator identical to yours and it too is a great piece of kit. Best wishes, Alan.

Hi Alan, thanks you for your supportive words my friend, they are very much appreciated. I am well pleased that your happy with both your table saw, and respirator. I do try to be as honest as I can, I must say that if I don't like it I won't review it :) Take care Mike

@@MikeWaldt I really hope am not biased, I am a white rose living 'down under' the past 50 odd years. I am 82 and about to take up wood turning , having spent a lifetime using metal working machines, building big telescopes and observatories. I was telling a young friend who has started wood turning about the Yorkshire Grit, I have bought the basic ingredients to make my own. I live on 5-acres of natural bush, so have more Eucalyptus, Wattle and other woods on my property to keep me going forever, we have some lovely timbers down here. Google Shevill Mathers and or Southern Cross Observatory-Tasmania if interested. Thanks again for the demonstration, it is how we find out about the good stuff. I thought it was a great way to reduce sanding dust (not healthy) and getting a nice finish at the same time with a minimum of stages through sanding grades.

Hi Mike! Thank you my friend for the demonstration. It looks like Glyn's product is working! I had a few exchanges with Glyn Sr. since, as you know, I made a formula for an abrasive paste (with mineral oil, beeswax and tripoli powder) and I believe Glyn added or changes some of the components. I am glad to see the paste is working well and wish all the best of success! Cheers! Daniel

Hi Mike, if you haven't tried it yet you should try some U beaut polish EEE paste, it works in a very similar fashion but in my view much better than the example you show. The EEE finishes to 1200 grit or higher after sanding to 360 grit and applying the sealer. EEE is a friction polish and is food safe and other finishes can be put on over it, BUT, it is not a British product, however it is much much better as it comes from the colonies. Regards Steve

Well, I have just received two tins of Yorkshire Grit one of which I was going to put in as a raffle prize. Might keep it now. I have just tried YG on the bottom of an oak bowl I am making from a very, very old piece of wood. I've always had a problem in that I have never been very happy with my finish: that has just changed! Watched MW's demo and I must say the finish I now have is very good and then with the bees wax, lovely. YG is so easy to use. No marks just a very smooth deep finish. (I use mainly bees wax for my finishing). Thanks Mr Waldt.

On the Yorkshire Grit side to me it looked like that both sides were exactly the same before you even applied the Hampshire Sheen. Does the Yorkshire Grit have some form of wax or something in it that helps to seal the wood eliminating the need to apply any further finish?
@MikeWaldt8 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, I am not sure of the ingredients, but a quick visit to the website should answer that for you mate. Although the initial finish looks good, a top finish of wax or similar is needed to make it durable, and resistant to marking. Hope this helps Take care Mike

Hi Mike, any thoughts on a "beginner lathe"? or where to look for that sort of research? I'm in the US. Would appreciate any insight - your videos are great!
@MikeWaldt8 жыл бұрын
Hi John, it really does depend on what you want to turn, pens, bowls, long spindles etc., etc. My advice would be to research KZbin, and Google, and get as much information under your belt to make an informed decision. Also being that you are in the US you have many machines available to you from manufacturers that I have little knowledge of, so my advice would not be accurate. Sorry I can't be of more use to you on this one . Take care Mike

One more comparison to make. How much does this product cost and how much would you save on sandpaper? If they both produce the same finish cost and I suppose time spent on each would be my deciding factors. Thanks for the side by side comparison, this should clear up any doubt if anyone still has any.

Glyn will ship YG to the US, no problem. The sanding sealer is (I think) just cellulose sanding sealer cut 50/50 with cellulose thinners. Demobbed with either the last grit abrasive you used or 0000 wire wool. I prefer the abrasive as the wire wool can leave metal shards in the piece. HTH!

Someday i hope my skills are polished enough I can say something like "I go from the tool to 240 grit"...!!! I will say it seems my surfaces are nicer working with a skew than with a bowl gouge, but since most of my work is on bowls, I think i'm doomed to lots of sanding :P The final difference in this instance seem minimal; as you said. I'd wager if you didn't know, you'd have a hard time saying which was which...seems the real advantage is the YG seems to simplify things a bit, as you don't have to swap papers as you go, etc, etc.... I know Martin has a US seller for Hampshire Sheen; do you know if the owner for Yorkshire Grit will have a US seller as well? I have a couple projects in mind it might be well suited to....

@MikeWaldt8 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, to ensure I gave you the correct information, I asked Glyn for his thoughts, and here is what he said : "Technically YG does act as a grain/pore filler as the slurry the abrasive paste creates will find its way into gaps that's one of the reasons you get a shiny surface but it won't work by just applying to wood" Hope this answers your question.
