I do remember, in woodwork class in the seventies, being taught to wax saw blades and the soles of planes. Then my big brother introduced me to the rag-in-a-can and oil. Since then I still use a wax block if away from the workshop (I now make my own with the same ingredients as James thank to KZbin). In the workshop I now use a tight spiral-rolled piece of leather in a can and oil. I make all my own paste waxes with beeswax, linseed oil or mineral oil, sometimes thinners and sometimes add a little carnuba flakes.

@@snakeplisken2123 In my opinion, and this only applies to woodturning, that I would use either a beeswax stick or a carnuba stick for a more a more harder finish. Somebody may correct me here but I don't see what advantage it would be to combine them for woodturnings.

Very helpful, thankyou James! As an aside, in the UK we don’t have Minwax but we do have Briwax, now in resurgence after company administration and factory fire. It is made up of Beeswax and Carnauba wax (plus solvent). I looked up Carnauba Wax...I hope it tickles you to know that Carnauba Wax is also known as Brazil Wax!! It also comes in a cream (I use it to soften leathery...er...I mean to soften leather)....

I'm a big fan of Briwax as a wood topcoat. It is _very_ soft, which may or may not work with your process, but it's really convenient to apply.

Hi from Australia James! I know I'm a bit late to the channel and video but I couldn't help myself. Really good video mate. I never thought of using a hard wax on my tools for rust prevention. I have made paste wax from beeswax + linseed oil, beeswax + Danish oil (natural - without additives), beeswax + coconut oil, beeswax + neatsfoot oil. I use the beeswax/linseed paste for wood that is going to be used outdoors. Eg. axe handles, rakes, furniture etc. The beeswax/Danish oil for indoor wood or small items. Eg. furniture, small tool handles etc. The beeswax/coconut oil for chopping boards etc. Lastly, the beeswax/neatsfoot oil for leatherwork. Like you, I love the stuff! My wife warns our visitors that if they sit still for too long they will get a coat of Danish oil paste wax! (My favourite. :) Another use for the softer linseed paste wax is I push the tips of screws and nails into the wax before using them. Particularly for hardwood. I find they go in much better, cause less splitting and give the nail/screw a nice coating to help prevent rust. I look forward to watching your future videos and catching up on your past ones. I have started to use a polissoir (made from broom straw) instead of steel wool so that I do not get any stray bits of steel on the surface. It works well on a flat surface. For curved surfaces I use white abrasive pads.

One caveat with waxing the sole of a plane - wax can transfer to the surface being planed, which can mess up staining and finishing.

I have never had the problem with that. I've been doing it for years and even on the final finish smoothing it doesn't cause any issue at all with finish application. It's one of those things you think too should in theory but in practice doesn't affect it at all.

I enjoyed your video on paste wax, I just finished a small coffee table with spar varnish, I mixed it with about 30% mineral spirits rather than using full strength varnish, that seems to work better for me. Now that the final coat is applied I want to try finishing the finish with Johnson paste wax and 0000 steel wool. One thing I read by a man named Bob flexner, who has a book entitled " understanding wood finishing ", anyway, he says to let the final finish to cure for 1 whole month before this step, I'm new to this but would like to know your thoughts on these ideas 💡.

Raw linseed oil stays fluid longer and takes longer to polymerize. That makes it great for lubrication and rust protection. But boiled linseed oil will polymerize quickly. That makes it better for wood finishes.

I use a mineral oil because I've not found a natural blo source, and I'm not in a hurry to accidentally burn the house down. But I started with 50/50 and went from there. So I've got 3 different mixes sitting around and one can store bought. Yeah figuring out which one works best for you can be complicated I like harder for things that dont touch the lathe and softer for lathe projects but I still go over ot with a bit of medium thick and a low set heating torch before I buff in with a rag, leaves everything shiny and with a waxy plastic feel that is still safe to drink out of

I would not use beeswax as a base for lubrication as it is quite sticky actually. So for that a normal candle-wax is better.

I actually like that aspect of it as it holds to the steel longer and will provide the lubrication much longer. It doesn't actually produce any resistance as it has a slightly more tacky surface but it does stay longer on the surface providing more lubrication for longer. Not a huge fan of paraffin wax myself as it rubs off very quickly.

You could, but you will almost always need to flatten the joint so it won't save much time. At least if I understand the question.

if you buy the BLO from the store most of them would be considered toxic. it is the same with raw linseed oil unless it is for consumption or sold as pure. but if you make the BLO at home and do not use dryers then it is perfectly safe.

I made my first attempt at paste wax a few days ago.I just threw a night light candle and two cap fulls of BLO into a cup, and then into the microwave for a minute or two. Its still a block, and it popped out of the cup quite easily, but it's slightly soft. It's hard when I pick it up initially, but I can feel it go soft in my hand in a few seconds. But it's so easy to do that I think I'll make a harder one later. And maybe a softer batch too. Still, I've never used a proper "store" paste wax so I don't know how good mine really is. I guess time will tell.

In terms of linseed oil: I live in a part of Germany (lower lusatia), where we eat it together with potatoes an quark. It's kind of a regional traditional meal. Even people in other parts of Germany don't believe us when we tell them that story. ^^

The raw will stay more oily longer so it is better for lubrication. The BLO will polymerize quickly so it is better for finishing.

Really informative, been trying to figure out what to do with plane handles and knobs. I recently sanded down a No7's and have applied 3 coats of Danish Oil, simply because it's the only oil I had. I want it to be a bit shinier? Although I think the handles are little dark. Would you recommend getting a little tone of paste wax to apply or would that natural type do the job? Cheers mate.

most paste waxes will make it a bit shineyer. but in general if you want gloss you have to go with a film finish.

Generally the hard wax is just for lubrication and rust prevention. Though I know a few people who will use it to polish it into a wood surface. You just have to heat it up either through friction or a heat gun to get it down into the wood. I know some people will add dye when they're mixing it. I don't as I generally just prefer the look of oiled wood.

It depends on the finish you use. The paste wax goes on top of the finish to polish it out.

I am living in Malaysia where tools are horribly expensive. No planers. No miter saw. No bench top saw. He'll... No saw!! (just kidding) I want to make a somewhat cutting board table top island. I am thinking of adding dye and coffee and wood stains and other things to some to some cheap 1 by 2's on the on the long end of the green (not the wide end) but the 1" end. Then, I will glue them altogether - hopefully they will be straight! - and sand them down. Question : Will the stain penetrate enough that I can sand (a little) and still keep the color? After that I want to put in some - I think! - mineral oil, then top it off with Johnson's paste wax? Any thoughts?

It depends on the stain. Some of them will go in a decent distance and some of them just sit on the top. It also depends on how much sanding you're wanting to do for you. If you're talking a very light grit like 400 then you're probably not going to hurt the stain at all. But if you're going something pretty coarse then you could eat through very quickly.

If you're talking about using it as a finish over the top then yes. The kind really doesn't matter that much. It is just a personal preference.

In that case you would probably want to use hard wax. It's a type of finish which is and is not a wax. But it's one coat rather than being built up over many coats. The two main brands are Rubio monacoat and Osmo.

I'm in Southern Utah and about to refinish an old door on a brick building. Hasn't been cared for in over a decade so it has cracks and is seriously sunbeaten, sees sun most of the day. It was stained and coated with poly that has spiderweb bed and chipped off. I have marine varnish with high uv protection. It needs to be stained again and I was thinking about putting on a few coats of BLO to nuorish the wood before the varnish. My questions are 1. Does putting on coats of BLO make sense for this? 2. If so, should the blood go on before the stain or after or does it matter?

If you're going to heat it up and melt it in then generally I wouldn't add any oil. You could also do it with a thinner like mineral spirits. But if you add an oil I would probably go with something like boiled linseed oil. That would cure and add a little more resilience to it. If you use something that stays oily then it will feel very oily for a long time.

Yes. That is a type of paste wax.

The shine is dependent upon what you put underneath the wax. And how you polish that. The wax just fills in imperfections of the surface. So if you want a matte finish, usually a simple oil like BLO and then paste wax will give you what you want. If you want high shine then you use a poly or shellac and then apply your past wax.

My last workbench top had shellac and then paste wax. Now I'm wondering if I can skip the shellac and just use paste wax. Only thing is I don't want the bench top to be too slick. Maybe I should only use beeswax on the work bench?

I just use boiled linseed oil and paste wax. Gives a good working surface. and over time you're going to be spelling other finishes and things on there anyways.

I am not familiar with the stuff. traditionally paste wax was used when the storm windows were changed.

yes, but not quite as much. but it is the same with any oil finish. even the oil based paints and poly. I have a video showing it catching on fire if you want to see what all it takes and how to easily avoid it.

Usually you don't finish the cedar at all on the inside and that keeps the aroma. If you seal it with most any protective finish it slows down or stops the scent altogether. if you google Brazilian wax you will see. but yes carnauba is a great wax. it is a bit hard, but that can be just what you want on some projects.

Boiled or not boiled? Thanks, I'm a carver and this has been on my list for a while. I'm going to look up your other video. (subbed as well). I'm thinking it's time to run a few small lots and see how they work on my carvings. The non-toxic oil, wax and wood combo would be great for toys. The young ones can chew at will with no danger. I have the beeswax and mineral oil, think I'm out of boiled linseed (gotta go look but I know it was nearly gone last time I used it). I've never used the raw linseed, what are the differences? I'm guessing the raw cures (polymerizes) more slowly? It it worth buying a can to add it to the lineup or does boiled serve the same purpose? Can you buy a can of raw and boil half yourself? (I'm a low volume/small projects kind of user). Is Tung oil a good option? (think I have that) Thanks again!

I use boiled lentil oil for my wood finish wax and I use raw for my rust protectant and lubricant wax. The raw will cure much slower whereas boiled linseed oil will cure overnight. If you get boiled linseed oil from the store I would not suggest using it on things people would chew on as it has chemical dryers in it. The stuff I use is boiled and cereal I've made it home so that is safe to eat. I have a video on making your own BLO if you want to see that. Tongue oil is very similar to linseed oil. It comes from the tongue tree in Asia.

Yes. I usually finish with boiled Lindsey oil and paste wax, particularly for handheld items. I don't generally use stains but yes you can put this over that.

HELP ANYONE: I put 5 coats of hard wax finish on a table top I sanded between coats but the finish is still slightly uneven. Can I go over the top with Briwax and polish it to get an even coat or should I try to keep going with the hard wax finish?

It is a much softer wax than some of the others like paraffin but I like that as it's easier to clean up. Some people like a harder wax like paraffin.

Anyone, what would you recommend as a finish for some hand made step ladders I have made from American Ash? Currently they are unfinished as I cannot decide what to do with them.

That really comes down to a personal choice. For me. I would definitely go with a boiled linseed oil and paste wax finish, but that's mostly because I just love the feel of it. I'm not a fan of a film finish particularly than something that you're going to be handling. But that being said, it's not a very protective finish.

You list a recipe of 3 parts bees wax, 1 part linseed oil in the video. Is that boiled or unboiled linseed oil?

It depends. I use raw linseed oil for lubrication and rust prevention. And I use boiled linseed oil for wood finishes.

If I want to remove the old finish I use a card scraper. fast and easy! you can also sand, but that takes a lot more work!
