I really appreciate how much you stress the use of reference faces for handtool work.

On the Veritas wheel mortise gauge, I usually push the back of the rods against the bench and the mortise chisel to set their distance. The additional shaft clamp can then keep that reference, so the fence can be adjusted to match the stock.

Now I'm sorry I missed the stream because a couple of weeks ago I was helping a friend demolish a house that was built after WW2 and the doors and windows had bridle joint with a little addition on them. On each bridle joint there were three dowels, at an angle of about 40 degrees, two were directed towards the other end of the board while the third was directed towards the corner. My assumption is that due to lack of resources or poor quality glue, the carpenter decided to strengthen the joint a bit.

Before air conditioning a lot of the glues would break down over time due to the expansion and contractions so adding mechanical advantage to a joint was seen as the quality way to do things.

Congrats on 17. I'm on 37 years. Yea were did the time go? Remember that. old age and a role of toilet paper have one thing in common. When the role reaches the end....it go's really fast.
