This very helpful! Thank you for posting. I just purchased my first Irish flute and it didn't come with any care instructions, so your video is a welcome guide. :).

I like the smell of almond oil, though my flutemaker recommended standard store-bought bore oil. I just oiled my own keyless flute for the first time today and I have a question. Is there a time AFTER oiling that I should avoid playing the instrument? I am aware that it’s good to oil after it’s had a chance to dry out from playing.

I just came across your video tonight. Great tips, thanks. Question for you ;) I'm concerned about the cork in my flute. It has never been removed since I bought it. I am wondering if moisture... can deteriorate a cork and influence the tone. I do not have the skill ( or confidence) to take the cork out and replace it. What to do? :)

I really like the background music. Where can I get the album?

Don't know if this is the best place to order, but www.irishflutestore.com/collections/miscellany has it.

yeah what Miz said😄 thanks for sharing this info. my flute is new and there is a lot of resistance when joining the sections, should it be lubricated, or should I force the sections together? How can i tell if it was lubricated at the manufacturer?
@philippbruschweiler2921 Жыл бұрын
Don't use force! Add cork grease (even if you have wound strings instead of cork). If greasing it doesn't reduce the resistance, contact the maker of your flute since it's still new. Otherwise, bring it to an expert to have a look at.

Can I use some of these tips for a wooden whistle? Is there anything whistle-specific of which I should be aware?

Thank you for this video. I have some questions: Which model is your flute? What flute maker would you recommend for an intermediate player? I only have pvc flute and sadly no air conditioning in my house. In summer here it easily reaches 40 degree (celsius) should i avoid buying a wooden flute?

In Concert band, would you recommend switching from a standard flute to a wooden flute? If so, what are the differences between the both?
@blaynechastain6 жыл бұрын
Hmmm... I'd check with your band director though they may not know that it wasn't until about 1831-1847 that the metal / boehm flute was used in "classical" music. The key system is different so you'd need to make sure you could keep up with other flute player with whatever repertoire you are playing (should be fine) and also that the timbre of the wooden flute would work for your band. You might show your band director something like this so they get a sense of the instrument... kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJ3LqH-ChrShbpo Chris Norman is a modern player that plays everything from Irish trad to classical...

What is the little white-ish swab you've covered with oil made of?
@MGMc4 жыл бұрын
If you're asking about what I think you are, it's an ear swab, commonly known as a Q-tip.
@colomon24 жыл бұрын
Ha! No, I can recognize a Q-tip. I meant the square of fabric (?) he dips in the oil at about 1:05 and then threads through the cleaning rod, for getting the oil into the bore. I ended up cutting some squares out of an old t-shirt and using that for this purpose, but I guess I'm still curious if there's something better to use.

i have a regular wooden piccolo. both head and body are wooden, will the oil still help it from warping and cracking?
@bertoldriesenteil14304 жыл бұрын
Indirectly perhaps, but the oil acts primarily as a barrier against the wood absorbing moisture. Cracks can have many causes. Warping is rare.

How do I oil the headjoint? Do I really need to pop out the headcork? Thanks!
@blaynechastain4 жыл бұрын
I usually do. Only have to oil the headjoint if it is unlined.

Is that a baroque flute??? If so where can I buy one???
@bertoldriesenteil14304 жыл бұрын
It is not baroque but newer. Some features suggest the first half of the 19th century. The tenons are strengthened with metal which looks French. It could be quite new, as old styles are sometimes copied.

It's a Patrick Olwell. 6-Key "Pratten" Style flute.
