For years the United States was confident that a newly democratic Russia and an increasingly wealthy China would be lured into a Western-led order that promised peace and prosperity-so long as they agreed to Washington's terms. By the time America emerged from 20 years of counterterrorism, it was clear that this was a fantasy. Now the three powers are engaged in a high-stakes struggle for military, economic, political and technological supremacy that seems likely to stretch on for decades.
Pulitzer-prize winning journalist David Sanger-a Distinguished Wilson Center scholar-and Wilson Public Policy Fellow Mary K. Brooks have written an insider account of what happened as five presidents grappled with these new realities. New Cold Wars: China's Rise, Russia's Invasion and America's Struggle to Defend the West moves rapidly through 30 years of Washington's dawning awareness of Vladimir Putin's and Xi Jinping's ambitions, culminating in the Biden administration's efforts to contain China's technological progress and push back on Russia's invasion-and its nuclear threats.

If the us loves taiwan so much, why not build formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan?

Because there is no Taiwan as a state. It's Republic of China and that's against one China policy.

US builds formal diplomatic relations with most countries in the world, but only grants the privilege of visa free to some 40 countries, including Taiwan. And, they are all important allies.

@@profriday Yeah, Taiwan as a region. Have you seen passports of people from Taiwan?

@@freespeech8520 Taiwan's existence as a state does not require the recognition of others. Even PLA (Chinese army) dares not violate Taiwan's sovereignty.

Cold War is not a HOT War. Soviet Union lost Cold War 1.0. China will follow suit in Cold War 2.0.

According to the model of the five stages of grief (or the Kübler-Ross model), those experiencing grief go through five emotions: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. here is anger

You got it all wrong. The reality of what happened is as the following: Deinal, Smearing with lies and fabrications, Anger, & Kidnapping the CFOs of the companies with which they canNOT fairly and squarely compete via their 51st state by the name of Canada.

What a biased point !! All Russia wanted from Ukraine was for the West to honour the Minsk agreement which Ukraine/France/Germany agreed with Russia..ie that Ukraine not join NATO and be neutral !!! As for China, what was misjudged ?? You expect China to follow all US policies?? China has not changed ANY of its foreign policies over the past decade, its the US that has made all the moves and changes!!!
