This is probably one of the best bird feeders around! I built one 20 years ago and it looks better every year as the Cedar continues to weather - the birds seem to love the rustic look as well . *** I chose not to do the copper roof as I thought it would be too slippery for bird landings - - Instead; I made my own Cedar shingles and simply attached them with an outdoor glue . . after 20 years they are only just beginning to fall off - so it's time to make a new batch of shingles CHEERS!

How do you put the bird seed in after it’s fully assembled and post mounted? I just watched this video for a second time and can clearly see that this design doesn’t work. The way I see it, you would have to disassemble the roof and detach it from the mounting post to get the bird seed inside.

Sorry we didn’t fully explain that part in the video, but it is explained in the plans. The pipe that it is mounted on runs through the body of the feeder and screws in to the roof. Then you drill a hole through pipe just below the bottom of the feeder and run a pin through it. The body of the feeder sits on the pin. When you want to refill it, pull the pin, and the body drops down so you can fill it with seed from the top. There is a photo here (3rd thumbnail over, but it doesn’t show the pin): www.woodsmithplans.com/plan/bird-feeder/

I've added an article on our website with some drawings of the mounting assembly to help visualize that process: www.woodsmith.com/article/building-a-deluxe-cedar-bird-feeder-with-copper-roof/

Where can one get the roll of 3ml copper sheeting? Thanks for the great video.

I Read the explanation on how to fill it. Still don't understand. I wish you'd shown it.

I agree we really missed an opportunity to demonstrate something that wasn't self-evident. Basically, only the roof portion is mounted to the pole and the body can slide up and down the pole and held in place with a pin underneath. I've added an article on our website with some more drawings to show the mounting assembly (hopefully that helps): www.woodsmith.com/article/building-a-deluxe-cedar-bird-feeder-with-copper-roof/

Okay we are going to pretend that the young guy grew that old in just seconds. Part of the video is missing when do you install the glass and how do you put feed in it?

I really don’t think the angle of the finished bird house was very flattering.
