Natural edge bowls can be stunning pieces and in this video I give a few tips and tricks on how to make them a little easier to turn.

Wood turning can be a dangerous hobby. My videos show my methods of turning and if you do not feel comfortable with my methods please do not copy them but rather use a method you feel comfortable using. Your safety is your responsibility as is the safety in your workshop. Enjoy the videos, hopefully something inspires you or helps you along the way. Irish woodturning is a craft that is dying out and should be preserved so that the tradition of Wood turning in Ireland stays alive and well.
Shay.

Cheers Will, I like the idea of leaving the tennon on so that the bowl stays raised for the oil to dry and you are more than welcome mate. Shay

Nice looking finished bowl. I agree that the danish oil looks good on the bark, it makes the texture pop 👍

Morning Shay, I agree with you regarding Live V Natural Edge. Lovely looking bowl and the oil really made it pop. For some reason I thought Lime was quite a plain grained wood, don't know why. Take care mate. Cheers, Huw

Thanks Huw, I think it is Lime mate, it has been in the log store for years but it was in the layer that I know is lime so I honestly am guessing it is lime. Shay

2:35 I agree, Shay. When the tree is alive, it has bark. When it dies and bark falls off, the edge of the wood remains. Live edge, bark on. Natural edge, bark off. Some consider this nitpicking, but it's a distinction worth preserving. But your video title says Natural Edge.

Yes it does indeed. I did that in order to try and get a conversation going and get people's opinions on the matter. Shay.

They never stay on Chuck, normally I just use some paper towel and tape but for a video I thought I had better be a bit classy lol. Shay

Hi Shay hope you're well. Lovely bowl & well explained about live edge / natural edge. Re - your tenon, when you say that you are making it quite deep, just how deep is quite deep ? Great job. Cheers mate 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Normally I make tennons between 1/4 and 1/2 the depth of the jaws but for this one I went in about 3/4 of the depth Jim. Shay

Lovely bowl. You did a great job with it as well. Personally I prefer to use only my bowl gouge on the inside. I’ve tried using the parting tool as you did and lost large pieces of bark as the tool first touched it. I also felt like it caused an artificial limit to the wall thickness. I prefer to turn mine a little thinner than you did here. Other than that I think you and I have similar thoughts and processes. Great job.

I find if the parting tool is not extremely sharp and not cutting dead centre it can pull the bark off Doug, I have done it more than once myself. I like using the parting tool as the straight cut gives me an anchor for when my hands are not behaving, it has just become habit now. The CA really helps with bark retention as well. Shay

@@BBTurning I fully understand. One of the things I live about turning is that there is no one way that things have to be done. Each of us finds the way that works best for us.

I'm not sure if your brand is different, but I'm not a fan when it comes to the smell of danish oil. I have to get rid of the rags and air everywhere I use it.
@BBTurning
@BBTurning 3 ай бұрын
I don't know if it does smell different Archie, quite possibly and what you are doing with the rags is nearly perfect. All oil based finishes can spontaneously combust if they are left on a balled up cloth. Getting rid of them is the correct thing to do. The fire service recommendations are either hang the up to dry out or soak them in water prior to getting rid of them. Over 25 years in the fire service I have attended between 8 and 10 fires caused by this very thing. Shay.
