A huge thank you to my friend and wood turner extraordinaire Mike Dellekamp who donated the spalted maple “firewood” that had this bowl hidden inside. Let me know if you have any comments, questions and feel free to share this video with your family and friends.

Mike, Thank you! I used a cole chuck for years but have largely converted to using a shop made donut chuck which is a very easy project that hold almost any bowl very securely. Thanks for watching!

You are very welcome! As you get more into turning you will always find you need new gadgets and tools to perform didn’t functions. It’s just part of the process as your skills improve. You will love the 15/24 lathe. I’ve had mine a few years and have been very happy with it. Cheers and have a great day! Michael

If you don't mind answering my questions, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the 1524. Does it bog down on large bowls? Have you turned outboard on it yet? Have you had any issues with it? Thank you.
@SapperWoodworking

Any lathe running on 110V is usually 1.75 hp or less so yes it can bog down if you’re too aggressive on a big bowl or your tools are dull. But that is also true on a 220V lathe. Full disclosure, I did trade up to a Harvey Lathe last winner. Not because I was disappointed with the Laguna in any way, shape or form, but I got a great deal on the Harvey and couldn’t pass it up. I had zero issues with my Laguna. I would have no problem buying another one and would have loved to have kept it if I had space for two lathes. It has a great fit and finish, and I would consider the best in its class. I never tried turning out board. Cheers and good luck, Michael.

Thank you! Turning spalted wood can be challenging at times, with hidden pockets of wood rot. This bowl turned out smaller than expected due to excess rot on the bottom. Nevertheless a fun project!

I hope you have better luck with your Laguna than I did. Maybe they’ve corrected the issues. I started with the 12/16 but had control board problems continuously. They’d send a repair part and it’d work ok for a couple months then go bad. They gave me a deal to upgrade to the 12/24. 3 days after receiving it it quit. They sent a new head stock and 3 days later it quit. I had the 2hp 220v motor. Apparently every time I tried hollowing with a forstner bit it would blow a ceramic fuse. It took them several momths to find out the problem. The fuse was such a weird number I could never find a replacement in town (6 businesses) or on line. After a big help from Woodcraft where I bought the 12/16 from they refunded all my money.

Rick, thanks for writing. My experience with the 15/24 has been a bit less than perfect. A few weeks after delivery, in the middle of simply turning the unit off and on while sanding, the unit would not spin up to any speed. After about a 5 minute call to their customer service, the tech figured it was a bad circuit board and ended up shipping me an entire new head unit, which was swapped out in 10 minutes. A little headache but pretty responsive customer service. Since then I've turned some pretty large bowls. Currently recording a new video working with a pretty heavy 15" round x 10" green ash blank without issues. Overall I'm happy with it. I'm currently considering a new band saw and would love to do a long term test with one of their models. I push the limits on my current 3hp BS regularly re-sawing logs and bowl blanks, all up to 12 inches.

Nice video, I have two questions, First I am looking to buy the Revo 15/24 how do you like it after a couple of years? And Please explain your Donut chuck? is it just a jam chuck? Thanks

Thank you! I do like this lathe a lot! I upgrade from a 15 year old midi capable of turning a 12” bowl. This will do a bit over 15”. The fit and finish is outstanding! I was a bit concerned about an under weighted base so I added a ply box below that hangs off the leg shelve supports with about 175lbs of sand and that helps tremendously with stability. I just finished turning an Ash bowl that was green and just over 15” without issues. A heavy chunk of wood for sure. Had to spin it at about 50rpm until it rounded a bit but it was fine. I’ll have a video up soon that shows the project A donut chuck is not a jam chuck. It uses a large face plate board with an opposite ring to hold down the bowl, usually using long carriage bolts or threaded rod. It tends to be more secure than a jam chuck and allows complete access to the bottom of the bowl without the tail stock in the way. I use both methods to finish the bottom of my bowls. Good luck and thanks for watching. Michael

Are you still happy with this lathe? I'm seriously looking at this same model and have read the other responses you've given.

I ended up trading up to a bigger lathe with a greater capacity; now that I have room in my shop and a 220v outlet. I still loved that lathe and was super happy with it; I just wanted more capabilities. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the Laguna. Thanks for watching.

That is a great idea for the bowl support. Has it worked out well?
@SapperWoodworking
@SapperWoodworking 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it does! I used that technique often; usually when there is a bark edge on the outside of the bowl which would cause it to never be balanced very well. In this case the bottom of the bowl was showing signs of excessive rot from wood spalting and I was unsure the bottom recess would take the chuck pressure. Using that support while carving out the bowl center helps the bowl stay secure! Thanks for watching!

@SapperWoodworking

3 months into ownership of the 15-24 and I like it. A great size compromise between a midi/bench top and a full size 220v lathe. Some would consider it under powered but I just take lighter cuts on the bigger projects. I’m working on turning a big green chunk of ash right at the 15” bowl capacity and so far, so good. I intend to do a dedicated tool review video after a few more months of usage. I did build a plywood box into the base that holds about 175lbs of sand; which provides additional counter balance weight when truing out of balance blanks. Fit and finish is fantastic.
