Laguna has introduced a new mid-sized lathe, and here I'll show you what's in the box, set it up, and turn a bowl. Be sure to check back for a ToolMetrix "Deep Dive" video coming soon. lagunalathe.com/15-24/

I appreciate your thoroughness when talking about adjusting the leg height. I am 6'4", so I might need to use different hole for inserting the legs. Let me correct my statement- I appreciate your thoroughness and how you do an unboxing video and follow-up with a deep dive video. Well done!

Nice video and lathe Paul! and I can tell you were doing your best to bog it down with those monster cuts. nice to see it handled whatever you threw at it! thanks for sharing!

Fantastic lathe to fill the gap in their lineup and has a few extra features I wish my 18/36 had. I looove the adjustable legs!! I’m 6’7” and the 18/36, even with the riser kit is not tall enough for me. I have to use the riser kit and 2x4s to get it to elbow height.

Yep I agree with your comments and I was thrilled to see the adjustable legs with such a huge range of adjustability.

First off. I'm not hating on Luguna. It was actually my first pick at woodcraft when I finally made a decision to buy my 12x16. I did buy one in fact. On my first bowl, I could NOT get the drive center to pop out using the tool provided. The drive center had some black powder coat sealer on it. That's what it appeared to be. Anyway, I could not get it out, without taking a small block of wood and touch it against the black nylon knob and take a hammer and tap that wood. It did finally come out, but it took over 20 minutes. As soon as the machine was turned back on, it started to make a ticking sound. Something had moved. We think "Laguna & I" that the front bearing had slipped. They sent me a 2nd unit. When I got it, it was damaged. The 2 rails on the control unit were bent, and one was broke. They asked for me to throw both units on a pallet and band them to it. They paid for shipping them back to California. They shipped me "another" unit, and it too was damaged, and used. The motor had metal shavings leaking out around the housing. The cover for the belts was scared. The ways were dirty and nasty looking. This was no doubt a used piece of equipment. They shipped another unit to WoodCraft. I shipped the "used" piece back to them. When I drove 2 hours to woodcraft to pick up my new 12x16 lathe, the sales staff opened the box for inspection, and "AGAIN", the unit was damaged. The box showed no outward damage, just like mine showed. Nothing. But that "new" lathe had the same 2 rails on the control unit bent over. Needless to say, the store mgr was livid. All he could do at that point in time was let me either take home a Jet 12x21 or have another Laguna shipped to them. I opted for the Jet. The drive spur did not have this black powder coat look to it, and when I went to remove it using their tool, it popped right out. BTW, the folks at Laguna, both in California and South Carolina were great about the whole process. I hope they figure out what is damaging these smaller lathes.

Wow. Thanks for sharing your story. That’s rough to hear and indeed I hope they can get this figured out.

@@ToolMetrix Yeah, Like I said. I was wanting that Laguna that I had compared to the Rikon side by side in the store. I had some brief training with an older fella, and he had 4 Jet's, so I was familiar with them. It's all good. Laguna's a good brand of gear. Just didn't materialize for me.

Paul; Great video. I watched this a couple times along with your follow-up deep dive video. I purchased a 12/16 lathe about a year and a half ago; very good lathe but needed a little more power for some larger bowls. I recently sold the 12/16 (not enough shop space for 2 lathes) and just ordered the 15/24 lathe, extension, mobility kit, and Led light. Should receive the lathe in a couple weeks. I do want to purchase one or two additional tool rests; can you tell me the post length and overall tool rest height? Thanks.
@ToolMetrix3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, Thank you. Unfortunately I no longer have the 1524 in my shop, and I don't recall the specs on the tool rest. I do know that the post diameter is 1"; the same as the other lathes in the Laguna line.
@davidgraham26734 жыл бұрын
Does this model have the ability to use the extension for doing larger bowls than 15 inches? I know the 12/16 will allow you to drop the extension down so you can turn bowls larger than 12 inches. Also, is this 1 1/2 HP motor as strong as the 1 1/2 HP motor on the 18/36 which uses VFD versus this one using PWM? One final question, would you go with a Laguna 18/36 lathe over a Nova Galaxy, or Nova Saturn model? I'd like to get the best lathe possible for under $3,000. Thanks for the video.
@ToolMetrix4 жыл бұрын
It has an extension and it creates more bowl capacity. I don't know how much more capacity yet, but I should receive one in a few weeks so I'll know more then. I haven't used a 110V 1836, but I'd speculate that you'd see slightly more power (although probably not signficant), particularly in the low range, on a VFD system. VFD is completely different, and in general better as the motor is operating on 3 phase power will provide smoother transition and more consistent performance across a wider range of speeds. I don't have any experience with recent Nova lathes so my opinion would be based on new Laguna gear compared with 15 year old Nova gear. Not a fair comparison.

I really like my 18/36 but I was wondering if Laguna makes a low profile for us cripples? recent wheelchair bound makes a new learning curve now after 50 years of turning. Thanks, love your channel friend!

Paul, I should have watched a lil closer on the leg assembly, looks like it can be set lower for a WC.
@themissouriwoodwaltzer78274 жыл бұрын
I looked up the height specs from the site and the numbers are: Floor To Bed Min.: 28-19/32″ Floor To Bed Max.: 43-19/32″ I was 6‘ now about 4-1/2‘ LOL
@ToolMetrix4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your input on this Woody, and your feedback on my channel. Do you feel, given the specs of the machine, that it could operate at the appropriate height for you?
@themissouriwoodwaltzer78274 жыл бұрын
@@ToolMetrix Although the Veterans Administration has provided me with a power wheelchair (PWC) after the stroke that rises (gets me back to my 6' height) and allows me to reach my other lathes (and other power equipment), I made “stirrups” that mount on the front caster wheels and sit sprattel leg to the lathe but that gets a bit uncomfortable after time; would be more convenient staying at a lower level placing my legs under the lathe and faster moving say over to the sharping station, the PWC moves slower at a raised height for safety reasons. I think that the 28“ height on this Laguna would work for those that are in a common manual wheelchair.

Seems kind of loud compared to the 1836. Also do they have a mobility kit for it?
@ToolMetrix4 жыл бұрын
I would say that it is slightly louder than the 1836, but it's not too loud. It's a different power system entirely from the 18|38. The 1836 uses variable frequency drive and the 1524 uses pulse width modulation. Both are very good, but the VFD is a higher end approach.

Looks like a nice lathe, what is the voltage and amperage on the motor? Can it be wired 110v or 220v? Thanks for making the video.
@ToolMetrix4 жыл бұрын
Hi SD, thanks for watching. This lathe is not designed for 220v wiring; 110v only. Specified amperage draw is 8 amps. I haven't measured it yet myself, but that's probably about right.

@@ToolMetrix thanks, I'm using an old Shopsmith from 1952 that someone gave me. It was good to learn on but would definitely like to upgrade to this Laguna. My Shopsmith only has 1/2 HP motor and vibrates too much.

I see that you are using a chuck on the spindle. What brand and model? And if that chuck requires an insert, which insert. as some have rh on them.? I'd hope they have a set screw to keep that insert well secured to the chuck for when the direction is reversed.

It’s a nova G3 with their insert. Not sure what model number it is.
