Woodturning - Bamboo (From Tropical Storm Fred)

First, I'd like to thank Tropical Storm Fred for leaving me some beach treasures while not ripping the roof off of my house! I knew I wanted to do a woodturning project with the bamboo I found, I just wasn't sure which approach to take.. So I decided to take advantage of it's natural architecture and turn it into a water vessel!
I've cut bamboo similar to this before and the walls were a lot thicker than the bamboo I cut here. This made it difficult to cut a ridge for the lid to seal to while keeping enough wood on the outside wall to support the wooden pin. Bamboo turned out to be a lot stronger than I imagined! So all turned out well.
I grew up on the beaches here in the panhandle of Florida and there's always an adventure waiting along the beaches less travelled.

@@PrestonsProjects For the record, I should have watched your wooden fan video first. There's no doubt that you have great skills. What you did there is far beyond common skills. Just go easier on your equipment! I'm 75 and have two heavy lathes older than myself! That is a lathe... specifically, it is a midi (medium) wood lathe, used for turning various woods, most plastics, the softer metals and stone... The smaller handheld power tool with the spinning sanding burr and grinding bits was a Dremel tool...

Does bamboo have to be cured to be able to drink liquids in it?

Should be wax sealed in order to hold fluids for extended times, but if just using for a quick drink it shouldn't leak... It should be dried immediately after use, to prevent too much moisture from soaking into the fibers and warping or cracking the material. Alternatively, you could coat the entire piece in that total boat epoxy... fairly long lived protection with that, and no chance for mold and mildew to eat into the permeable material!
