This week’s project is a banded bowl in the style of Emma Cook aka The Tiny Turner. This works better on a bowl with straight sides like a calabash bowl, but the process is the same.

You got me ! I horde every small piece of wood too , thinking I'll do pendants .......etc. I've tried the coloured wire too with similar application issues ! Looks great Lisa. Agree that the banding is slightly hidden due to the shape of the bowl, but it will give a nice surprise to those that catch a glimpse and then pick up the bowl.

Hi Lisa ! - The bowl embellishment came out a lot better than I expected - more than pleasantly surprised ! Another thing that made sense is the 1:1:1 band sizing - the ole rule of thirds is a good one eh ! Great design. - Copper banding ? I did a few 18" Quidditch brooms and I used tiny brass nails and RTV (ES8000?) but no solder. Since the shape was a cone and would slip into place, I was able to crimp the end together like duct workers do. Make sense ? - Light, red, close grain you say ? Old too ? Then it's redwood from Back in The Day. Good find - the tree has thrice blessed ! Thanks for sharing and take care. -Mike

Mike! Hello my friend. Yes, I’m pretty sure it is redwood. Have some nice big chunks left to play with. Your Quidditch broom construction makes perfect sense. I didn’t really explain the copper band part very well - I cut a channel in the “glass” where the band would sit, then parted that off at about half so I could slide the band on and then glue the top of the glass back on. I shaped the copper on a piece of pvc pipe and clamped it to get it to hold the shape more of less, but the trying to solder the butt-joint together was ridiculous. I think I could maybe clamp it around a piece of scrap wood and solder it on that, where it wouldn’t matter if the wood got scorched or not. I can’t remember if I published a pic of the beer-stein looking thing I did with the White Tree of Gondor etched into a copper plate? I’ll send you a pic by email - I made little copper rivets from a piece of romex ground wire for that one and then drilled all the way thru the mug and inserted them from the inside out, and then mushroomed the other end over top of the copper plate and bands. Anyway, I think it all looks really cool but epoxy hasn’t worked out well either so I’m still on the hunt for a way to secure a band around something. Or maybe I should just “paint” it with copper powder and it’ll *look* like a copper band 🤣.

Looks really great Lisa in 2006 I had the Privilege of traveling to Mwanza Tanzania and watching the African cane maker Carve some beautiful canes and they would inlay bands of Cooper in the wood and to do this they would make a v shape in the wood and then place their wire in the v shape leaving the wire proud and then gently tap it down into the v and then they would sand off what was still proud leaving it smooth to the wood surface no glue or adhesive needed to keep it there Blessings.

That’s a great idea - I’ll give it a shot next time I’m using plain copper wire - this was painted copper wire and I’m not sure the color would withstand the process

I'm not a turner but I hope to one day, but I have two suggestions: Take the item off the lathe and use a banding wheel (a type of lazy Susan used in pottery) for the painting - you'd be sitting and working horizontally instead of standing and working vertically. Second, create a separate channel just outside the carved area for the wire; if it's tight enough compression would be enough to hold the wire in place, then varnish to secure it.

The grain in your mystery wood sure looks like old growth Red Wood to me. I think the grain is too tight to be Cedar and I believe you would get a slight Cedar aroma when you turn it. Nice look on the bowl. Thanks!

Thanks Dennis! I agree with the redwood. It really doesn’t smell like anything and even old, dry cedar would smell a little once you start turning it. The grain seems very conifer-ish to me so I’m guessing it’s redwood.

I just started doing a carved band in a few bowls. I may have to try the micro powder. It gives a nice look. As far as the wood identification. I bet its redwood. My first thought was western red cedar but you would have noticed the cedar odor. To me redwood does not have much odor and can look like cedar.

Thanks Matt! Yes, this is very light weight. I’m guessing a conifer of some sort, likely old growth redwood or something similar. It was an enormous chunk of wood and a single piece at that.

@@LisaRamlow Redwood is a timber I have no experience with at all and the absence of a pencil shavings smell would suggest that my guess was wrong. If you ever get the chance to try some Australian red cedar please go for it, a horrible smell but wow it's a beautiful timber.

Hi Amy! No, I don’t think so - how pathetic is it that I can’t remember for sure!? Gah, this getting older stuff kinda sucks! 🤣. I believe the gesso acts as a sealer and a primer but if you wanted to put a coat of shellac down first that should work 👍

Question about the wood. Is it light for the size. Sort of looks like padauk. When sanded was it kind of like a stain?

Hi Timothy! It is relatively light for the size but it is also super, super dry. It is this color throughout so not stained or dyed. The grain really looks like some sort of conifer and is softer than most woods I turn, so I'm still leaning toward redwood but I'm not sure I'll ever be sure just what it is

Bailey is pretty good. He’s such a chow hound he’s never turn his nose up at food and he understands the rules around when he gets treats - AFTER we’re done eating and never from the table. We usually put it in his bowl but it’s so cute to see him sit up and eat off a fork I couldn’t resist 😁
