Woodturning Butternut Start to Finish: Rough Turning A Bowl, Drying it in a Kiln, and Finish Turning
This week’s video is the start to finish process of turning a butternut bowl from green wood - rough turning, putting it in my dishwasher kiln, and then finish turning to complete the project. This is the first of the batch of six butternut bowl blanks I roughed out in early October. The wood was very wet, cut down August 19th, and was spraying water when rough turning. I forgot to weigh the roughed bowl blanks before I put them in the kiln, but I got down to between 7-11% moisture content in about 4 weeks and I didn’t lose a single blank - no cracking or splitting on any of these.
I also tried a new abrasive sanding paste and finish from Brad’s Workbench and I like the results. I’ll be using Ack’s sanding paste and polish on my next project and expect that will be equally as nice. While I’ve been using up the last of the a homemade batch of sanding paste, at this point I’d rather spend my time turning and not making products that I can purchase from other small businesses.

I think this is beautiful. The grain is very dynamic. Also, you are one of the few wood turners on here that I actually enjoy your commentary! Generally, I just want no talking and no music, but you are interesting and informative. Great work.

Hi Stacey, thank you so much for watching and for the feedback. I’ve been all over the place with my video format-some taking while I’m working, some no talking and music, now workshop sounds and commentary. It’s impossible to please everyone and the vast majority of my viewers have said they like the voice overs, many of whom are also turners. So I’m striving for videos that are interesting to people who don’t turn, but offer some content for those who do. I’m certainly not trying to put out instructional videos as I’m still learning, but other people can watch some of the things I’ve tried and will get some idea if they might like to try it to, or if it’s a complete bust, or whatever. I finally decided that I’d do the commentary - for those that don’t want to hear any chitchat, they can mute it but it doesn’t work the other way around! 😊

@@LisaRamlow Yes! I really like it. You come across as a friend just sharing your thoughts on the process, which I really like more than "this is how you do this." The tone is spot on and very unique. I also appreciate that you point out the little flubs or "imperfections" in the process. Very relatable. Really so much fun to watch and listen to.

You're not alone in it being satisfying to see the shape develop, I also find it really relaxing and often will watch a turning video just before going to bed. As a friend puts it, it's a very mindful activity. One day I'm hoping to have the space, money and time to get my own lathe.

Hi Greg! Turning videos are definitely an AMSR kinda thing. You’d be surprised at how little space some turners have - small shed kits and corners of basements. I’m super lucky in that when we moved I got a 24x36 pole barn with a concrete floor, insulation, and finished interior walls. Added a furnace it’s pretty much perfect, but I started out in a small basement room, moved up to a small garage, now I have the Taj Mahal of workshops. Be aware once you start turning, it’ll quickly become an obsession 😂

@@LisaRamlow I don't even have that, unfortunately. By American standards my house is tiny (OH is latterly from rural Arizona, I'd love to have that much space!) Probably a good thing I don't have the space, I already have one hobby taking up all my spare cash in guitars and basses, another would probably bankrupt me 😉

Hey Lisa, what a beautiful piece of wood. I love watching your videos cuz you narrate well and your video's are concise. I'm also glad that I don't have to fast forward your vid's to get away from that most distracting music people think they have to put in their video. I want to see, hear, feel the wood being cut off the piece. You are an excellent turner. ThankQ for showing me your skills.

They say you "can't teach an old dog, new tricks." Well, this old dog learned a simple "trick" with your video.....I have a complete set of air tools, to include an air chisel and I never considered using it to remove bark....I would get out the hammer and chisel and struggle through it. Good tip Lisa. And great job.

@LisaRamlow
@LisaRamlow 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ross! I’ve got a whole tree so I’m gonna jade to deal with the stink 😂 I gotta tell you though I was working with some wood black when I was carving that was 100x worse than butternut. My sawmill guy worked with some Amish folks and I asked them for some bark-on slices, which they did on a bit of an angle so the slab was oval. They referred to it as “bam” wood, and I’ve never found any reference to that anywhere so I’m guessing it’s a colloquial thing, but oh man that stuff was horrible. It literally smelled like swampy sewer gas when cutting it 🤮. I’ve never known for sure, but my guess is that is was cottonwood, or some other kind of poplar that likes its feet wet. Blech!
@rossthomas7425

@@LisaRamlow At a guess, you probably got a hold of some Callery Pear wood. it is an incredibly invasive tree from asia that smells a lot like rotting fish. Its actually outlawed in most urban cities because of the stink, even though its quite pretty when it flowers. It will grow pretty much anywhere.

You just gave me another idea how to remove the bark with that airtool. I have exactly the same tool but never thought of using it for this purpose. Thanks Lisa! Hi Leo! I learned the air chisel trick from one of Lyle Jamieson’s videos and it works really well! Fortunately for me, I’ve been able to get my hands on a lot more decent turning stock and can be a little picky about what I turn. I use poplar all the time for frames (the other two Bear Track Girls are artists and I make their frames) and it’s a wonderful wood...after it’s kiln dried! 😂

It's funny, While watching I was thinking about how I enjoy watching the shape form from such weird starting points when you mentioned the same thing in your vid, I don't think that's strange at all, unless we both are.

Nice shape and grain pattern. I like this one. Did it move much after turning? Does drying it out make it more stable? In my experience dry wood still moves.

Hi Andy! I’ve not found that the pieces I kin dry move much if at all. I’m sure things expand and contract with humidity but it doesn’t seem to stay that way

About how long was that blank in the kiln? Do you know or remember what the moisture content was when you put it? Beautiful work and beautiful wood.

Hi PJ! I roughed out 6 bowl blanks in October and put them in the kiln - I forgot to weigh them or check them with the moisture meter but they were very wet - tree was cut in late August. I think they were in for about 3 weeks when I turned the first one, which was still a tad wet as it went a bit oval when I finish turned it but it didn’t crack. This one had been sitting in there since then, but the light wasn’t on past about 4 weeks so it was dry enough at that point I just didn’t get a chance to work on any of them until recently. Next batch I’m planning to weigh and check MC when I put them in, and probably once a week to see how they go. Thanks for watching 😊

Very nice Lisa, The bowl is gorgeous and I like your voice over. I tried my own video and it didn't come out as nice. I used Shotcut, may I ask what video editor you use..?

Hi Doug! I have a website but at the moment it’s pretty bare bones. I have enough trouble trying to keep up with this YT channel - it’s amazing how long it takes to record and edit videos! I hardly have time to watch anyone else’s videos anymore 😂

Hey Lisa, a nice Bowl and a great job! 👍🏻Is the bowl stinking still after turning and finishing? And another question i have, do you know the book from the God of Woodturners, David Ellsworth? „Ellsworth on Woodturning“, from the year 2008. It is a must have for every Woodturner, so interesting and everybody can learn so many things. If you dont already have it, you could wish it for Christmas. ( from your family, not for me😄This book has recently also been available in German Language, and i devoured it! Now i wish you the best, be care and stay healthy. Many Greatings from northern Germany.

Hi there! No, once it was dry and finished it didn’t smell bad - just while it was wet. I’ve not read the Ellsworth book but will add it to my list 😊

Weird ? For enjoying a bowl shape emerge from a hunk of wood ? Not in the least. Only thing better is making a shape emerge😁 As usual, this is a pleasant video of a beautiful bowl ... even though it had avocados in it. Ugh (grumpy old fart who doesn't know an avocado from a persimmon👺👴) . Keep 'em coming Lisa🙏 Stay safe. -Mike😷 p.s. question: Why opt for a "V" gouge over a "U" gouge ?
@LisaRamlow
@LisaRamlow 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike! I think I went with the V gouge because my initial intent with the new gouge was to put a 40/40 grind on it and I’m pretty sure Stuart Batty says it needs the V shaped flute rather then the U flute. However once I got the gouge I was really hesitant to grind that much material off and decided to try the grind supplied by Thompson and I like it. I’m still planning on getting another good gouge and putting the 40/40 on as I like that one as well. Probably can’t have too many gouges, right!? 😂
