Woodturning: Carving and Embellishing an Aspen Vessel
Inspired by Greg Gallegos of Natural Selection Studio, I finished this aspen vessel / hollowform by carving it and then using black acrylic paint to highlight the carved areas and did a bit of a gradient blend on the rest.

Nice looking pot/vessel Lisa. I like poplar but it can be a hairy wood and difficult to stop the tear out. Bailey looks like a "try anything" type. I used to have a black lab that loved to sample stuff from the garden. She would only eat what she picked herself, green beans or tomatoes were her favorites. Great video. Thanks for posting.

Beautiful embellishment on the hollow form. The colors remind me of the sunsets we've been seeing these days that are colored by the smoke from the western wildfires. I still love Bailey. Thanks for including him in your videos. Good job, Lisa.

Thanks Crystal! The first time we went to Yellowstone there were wildfires in the area. We were staying in Driggs, ID and Marie got one of the most beautiful sunset pics (without water anyway) out the window of the hotel we were staying in. She had to take the screen out but it was worth it! That’s the same trip we hiked to the top of Mt Washburn for the amazing view everyone kept taking about and there was so much haze from the smoke you couldn’t see anything!

Glad you are trying new techniques and that you have a warm shop to work in during the winter months (almost hated to bring that up). I would have liked a glossy finish rather than the matte. I did a smaller hollow form with stain(similar to the one you did previously) and the gloss really popped the vibrancy of the stain.

To be honest this project got rushed. Too many irons in the fire at the moment so I figured it was a good first step. I will probably put some kind of finish on them, a spray lacquer or something.

Nice work, Lisa! I enjoyed watching your process and will check out his other work. I like Dan Young's stuff on IG, lately. Not sure I want to do much carving, myself, but it certainly gave me ideas in colouring or painting and piercing. I have a very good batch of poplar that's ready to be turned. I wasn't entirely certain it would be worth it. But, maybe a piercing and some dye would fit the softer wood. I like your work and agree the carvings could be deeper, next time. Give Bailey an extra hug for me. I had to send my Kiwi over the rainbow bridge last Friday. Still crushed. Pragmatist in me knows it was the exact right time we booked it for, observing her decline and giving her quality time to within hours of when her suffering would have started. My other sides are not a conversation for a KZbin comment. :) Protect that amazing bobcat and your dear friend from each other. Thanks for another great project video.

I’m so sorry Jay. It is never easy to lose a pet and making that decision is really hard. My dad’s dog is in the last stages but is still got a little spring in his step, though he’s lost a ton of weight and is just skin and bones. I was down there last weekend and he really surprised me when he took off across the yard, chasing the neighbors car back to the edge of the fence. I didn’t think he had that in him anymore but he seems like he’s not quite ready yet. Definitely the worst part of having pets is losing them. 💔 I figure poplar is a great wood to use for embellishing. It’s pretty easy to work with and is easy to find, generally speaking at least for me, since people don’t burn it.
@jayscott306
@jayscott306 Жыл бұрын
@@LisaRamlow Yes, important family members. She still had spunk and playfulness, but any effort exhausted her for an hour. Wasn't easy, but it was right. Yes, poplar is available, that's certain. I hope I enjoy working with it, when I get to it. Birch in spindle orientation has me itchy today. Peeling skew cuts are like hair clippings, but it does seem to have a good balance of hardness and good for embellishing. Have a great week.
