Very nice Mike. I use a bottle of alcohol with a spray top, to quickly wet the wood and check for bumps then it evaporates away. It also does a good job of clearing the dust from the grain when I wipe it on. I imagine that bowl will be in the gallery fairly soon 😉👍🏻

Really beautiful, Mike! It's hard to go wrong with Oak burl and you didn't. It's great to see you went the extra distance to ensure you have an impeccable surface to apply your finish to. Great tips, great video, great job! 😊 Phil

Great lump of wood. You did a great job with it as well. Glad you addressed the ring in the bottom. So many leave it. You didn’t and shared how you went back and removed it. Lovely piece Mike. BTW, a friend of mine used to take lumps that were fully buried like this one, turn and sand, then use 3-4 colors of dye. It was amazing how the burl grain popped out. Thanks again for all your efforts.

The wood is beautiful and you did a great job . . . but when I look at the finished bowl it looks like a dog has bitten a chunk out of it. Did you ever consider filling the voids with a clear resin prior to finish turning it ? that way the outside shape is complete and you would still be able to see the detail of the wood ?
@MikeWaldt3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Simon, I have toyed with the idea of resin, but like to keep things natural most of the time. One day I might however take the plunge! 🙂

I was worried about the gap in the mortise wall, but apparently burl grain is so twisted and tight, that gap wasn't a fatal weakness. Did you have any concerns about that?
@MikeWaldt3 жыл бұрын
As you say I have found that with Burr as long as you have around 80% jaw contact there are no issues .... to date anyway! 😉
