Woodturning - Old Willow Log Becomes Elegant Gift

Күн бұрын

I received a request from a subscriber to make a gift for his daughter and son-in-laws 9th wedding anniversary (which is willow or ceramic gifts). I said I'd have to go and check the wood pile, 15 minutes later and I had found this lump which I believe to be Willow.
Still find it fascinating what elegance and perfection can come out of a old slowly decaying log. And I just love the way this timber dances with the light in certain areas. I really hope they are used well and enjoyed! 😊
On another note I want to thank and welcome all new and existing subscribers! The channel has seen a large amount of growth recently and its all thanks to you, my followers. I'm also currently developing a store so that I can sell what I make and also the items I use to make them. This way you can either own something from this channel or make something similar yourself. I cant wait to continue this exciting journey with you all 😁

Kept wondering if you were going for a candle stick holder, bottle stopper or a pencil. End result is both good-looking and practical but it always saddens me a bit to see 90% of the original wood left on the shop floor.

My uncle had a woodworking yard, and I loved to visit him. The smell of the fresh wood was lovely. I still have the little shadow box that he made me over 50 years ago for my birthday.

That sure doesn't look like the willow that I get ( but with something like 1500 different willows in the world that isn't surprising ) . Many make me laugh when they say waste wood as there are so many ways to utilize wood. When I first started turning I would burn my scraps to cook and heat. There are so many downed trees in the woods it would take a life time to make a small dent in the forest. I made my share of pens from people throwing out wooden tables, stools etc. I have so much wood that I have cut down I had to give a great deal away. My brother in a clothes designer and I made him a bullt pen and several bowls which he displays in his men's and woman's shop. He also displays a couple in a art gallery. I was very surprised because I really not that good at turning. I was wondering what you were using for your finish. I was very impressed with your turning. Keep turning, learning and enjoy.

I’ve always heard that it is dangerous to wear gloves while turning wood as the glove can get caught between the tool support and the project causing some irritating problems. I see you don’t worry about that. Nice project, thanks for sharing.

Yeah on a metal lathe you will lose fingers almost guaranteed.

Been a machinist for 20 years. Gloves around a lathe or mill is bad mojo. As well as rings.

@@poppypalais3108 wow you're a sharp chisle aren't you. I'm fully aware that's a wood lathe buddy. I said "on," learn to read if you want to be clever. I own both wood and metal lathes, and I don't use gloves on either. Again that's right in the safety manuals of both tools, but you already proved to me you don't know how to read so there is that I guess.
