Tried the wax/mineral oil mix today. Super smooth sanding and no dust! The guy at CVS got a chuckle when he saw me grab the huge bottle of mineral oil and I told him, "I REALLY have to poop!" :)

I remember a huge argument at a demonstration here when a famous turner was told that the method he was using to sharpen the gouge he invented was wrong by a salesman for the company who made it. It was one of the best afternoons of my life.

Thanks again Carl. You help build confidence in newby turners. I find myself improving after following your instructions. I wonder what folks did before the internet?

That's reasonable. The reason I liked the Cindy gouge is because the grind allows me to get into tight spaces and make delicate cuts more easily than with a standard grind. I could maybe copy the grind onto a standard gouge but Cindy's gouge is only a couple of dollars more than a standard spindle gouge so I'd probably waste more metal away trying to replicate her grind than I'd save. I've found, after 7 years, that I only use about 4 tools now - wish I'd done more practice than buying.

The Cindy Drozda detail spindle gouge is well worth getting because it cuts beautifully and lets you get into really tight cuts. I have one but haven't used it here yet because I need to get a traditional grinder with 8" wheels in order to ensure I keep the grind on Cindy's gouge. I use the Sorby Pro, flat belt grinder, but Cindy uses the Wolverine system...more stuff to buy, oh boy, I hate this. (Just bought 2 new chucks to save changing jaws, plumbing new depths of laziness here)

Thank you James, yes you can put a lot of different grinds on them.I got to watch David Ellsworth turn a few weeks ago. He is amazing, yes it's a 3/8 Take care, Carl

Hi Tony, The bowl gouge I use has more of a fingernail grind but a spindle fingernail gouge has much lower sides.

So this is the Sorby detail gouge? I have seen some spindle gouges that look almost like and Ellsworth type grind. As always, thanks for the videos. You have no idea how helpful you are to us new turners.! Also is this a 3/8"?

Thanks Carl; this video helped me with a problem I'm having with the fingernail gouge. I have a terrible time with grabs, not sure what I do wrong. In your video, you mainly used the point. I try to use more of the side, as a cutting action. Maybe I try to go to far? Any advice on how I can master this tool?

hi, just because you see their name on the product, it doesnt mean that they use it also.... there are no magic tools out there that can help us turn better, we must turn every day something in order to get better at turning... only then you will see what tools fits YOUR way of turning....
@grandmastergeorgez
@grandmastergeorgez 11 жыл бұрын
most of the good turners out there make their own tools according to their style and needs.. so its better to copy the grinds rather than the tools.... Drozda diddnt start her grind at the gouge she is selling now... she started it on a normal one, but they have to make a living i guess so they try to make something a little different. i cant recall the name of the woodturner that said... yes you can buy the that x toll with my name on it but i stoped using it many years ago.... so go figure..

Carl...Am I seeing that correctly, is that a fingernail 'bowl gouge'? Also, will the same techniques you demonstrate here on the spindle work for creating beading on the exterior of a bowl? Great Video as always...John
@CarlJacobsonthewoodshop

John Grace Thank you John, No this is just a fingernail gouge. You can use it to do bead work on the outside of bowls.

Well, you can justify anything but I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't gamble and my wife tells me off for not buying tools so I suppose, when I was getting two quality chucks for the price of one and not taking food off the table, I might as well jump at the deal. Also, I'm tired of those wee machine screws wringing off, fouling their heads or shooting across the workshop.

That jaw changing gets old real quick, can't fault a guy for taking that shortcut to avoid the drudgery if he can afford the bite out of the wallet.
