Hi I'm Carl Jacobson from the Woodshoptv, I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together.

There's such a thing as intelligent risk taking and everyone draws the line differently. People get into turning for different reasons too. For some it's the passion of innovation, trying to create something beautiful that nobody has created before. Without taking some risks we'd all be turning out small, shallow, thick-walled bowls and the odd candlestick. Intelligent risk taking can unleash innovation, discovery and incredible beauty.. Personally, I like to see the results that turners can achieve when they think outside the box. When they follow their passion and create new shapes and effects that make you wonder at how they ever brought out that beauty in a piece of wood. Thanks Carl, for wowing me once again with that hollow form. Beautiful piece

Thank you very much Richard! I agree there's always some risk in everything, It's up to you as to what risk you're willing to take. Take care, Carl

A good Q & A once again Carl. At the end of the day as I always say, we are responsible for our own safety...if your comfortable with it... do it...if your not...don't :) Bye the way what time is the car picking me up for the Robust Open Day? ;) Cheers Mike

If you are too afraid of a piece of wood to turn it, you might as well quit turning. Any piece of wood has the potential to blow up, even if it appears solid. Even at slow speed, if you turn the rotational force into linear force, it's significant.

RealRuler2112 that ain't right. you can't expect people to all people to draw the same line in risk.

Like Carl said, turning has inherent risks. If you want to be 100% certain you never get burned and are afraid of getting burnt, go out to eat instead of cooking dinner yourself. Just my opinion...
