Hi my name is Carl Jacobson,
I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together. We also do a lot of epoxy projects as well as woodturning.

Thanks for the information about what tool you were using and providing the lathe speed when you changed it. I wish more demonstrators would provide that information. I always enjoy your videos.

Thanks Carl and great timing. A club member provided a demo earlier in the month of almost exactly the same turning process from blank, it corners and then he saved the live edge. His piece was dry so he was doing finishing cuts to shape. But again the concept was the same. Helps my memory!!

I love turning bowls! This is probably my favorite way of drying my rough turned bowls, but I’ve recently been experimenting with soaking them in denatured alcohol. I’ll probably go back to the shavings in a bag, because I am still getting some cracks in my black cherry. Thanks Carl and Robin!

Very cool Matt! I haven't tried the denatured alcohol, maybe I'll give that a try sometime. I do like the shavings in the bag though. Take care buddy!

Nice win on the silver maple. Some beautiful wood! Thank you for sharing your process for twice turned bowls. I never really thought about turning over the shavings too. Makes sense, and I will try that next time.

I’m a little curious why you chose to have the center of the log be the bottom of the bowl? Less warping/cracking that way?
@CarlJacobson
@CarlJacobson 4 ай бұрын
You want to turn the heart wood at the bottom not only to keep the color in, but to keep the rim from warping to much. Sap wood drys much faster.

@@CarlJacobson Do you do all your bowls in this orientation now Carl?

In my climate, I have found using the shavings just creates mold on the bowls. I will anchor seal the ends and then put it in the bag.
@CarlJacobson
@CarlJacobson 4 ай бұрын
Anchor Seal is great. I get mold to if I leave it in the bag to long without rotating it.

@@CarlJacobson Nice thing is I don't have to check it. Depending on the species, I'll look at it every month. Usually takes no more than 3 months. Maple dries fast, walnut takes its time. I just turned Hickory and Osage for the first time... don't know how long those will take.
