Woodturning Storytime - Revealing the Beauty of Spalted Wood

In this week’s woodturning video, we’ll be making a spalted hackberry hollow form. This is a perfect project for any woodturner as it really helps you with developing your eye for perfecting the shape of a piece.
Harry and I really wanted to try to highlight the spalting in this wood as best as we could so be began turning between centers so we could reorient the wood as we thought necessary.
As you’ll find out in the video Harry had some sentimental attachment to this wood so it brought back a story from his early days that he shares with you. It sounds like Harry needs to write a book!
The finishing process involved sanding sealer, Ack’s Abrasive paste and polish and lastly Hampshire Sheen High Gloss Wax.
This is a great project for woodworkers of all skill levels, and I hope that this video will inspire you to create your own hollow form. Thanks for watching!

I like the way you got that shape. Doing 2/3 from the bottom & 1/3 from the top. Never seen it done like that. Nice work.

Thanks! I had to improvise as I wasn't able to get a good push cut or a clean surface when I was trying to turn the bottom when the tailstock was in the way. So after getting it out of the way I got a much nicer cut without much tear out. To be honest I was thinking it would be a lot more difficult getting the 2nd turned surface to meet up with the first turned surface but I think I got lucky!

Very nice hollowform. That you mentioned the “F” word had me nervous for a minute. Question, do you find that you need to let the black CA sit for a few minutes to set all the way through? I’ve used it in the past and gotten glue streaks when I cut the top film of the glue away and the underneath smeared across my project. Just asking if it’s just me or a more common experience. Great project!

Sorry Harry, I watch to see Robert turn. This is an absolutely beautiful spalted hollow form. I know you hollow it all out, but are you able to sand the inside. If so can you share with us how you get in the inside and is there a product you use? I've tried to make a couple of hollow form pieces but I can't get in there unless I make to entrance a lot bigger.

Turning with one hand and petting your beaver with the other makes me reconsider which one of you needs the supervision. Nevertheless, your light expert touch is admirable. I’m trying to remember not to clutch my tool so hard and stay more relaxed while I’m turning. It’s a better way to work.

I appreciate how you kept adjusting the blank until you found the orientation that would play best on the form. As to Harry, tell him to anti-up with the finished goods that he claims to have turned. He tells a good story, but I think he has been chewing on too many shavings, trying to get high on the wood alcohol!😂
