Many of you may have heard that the world-famous Sycamore gap tree was felled last month. To mark this somber occasion I took this large piece of sycamore that had been sitting around since being felled for safety reasons and turned it into a large Pot, I thought it would be symbolic to allow life to grow from a felled sycamore.
The pot was sanded to 3000 grit and finished with Danish Oil, and Wood wax.
Let me know what you think of this piece!

Disclaimer:
My videos are for entertainment purposes only. Some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest, so when using any tool or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines first.
And Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practice. The gloves I wear are tight-fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT copy my actions if you feel unsafe doing so.

This is a particularly lovely piece, but I was wondering, even though it was a clearly aged piece of sycamore wood, would it be possible that as it ages more, could cracks still develop in it as age dries it still more.
@HarrySmithShorts
@HarrySmithShorts 6 ай бұрын
Hello Charles you are correct it was seasoned for well over a year outside and then brought in to dry. I tested the moisture content prior to turning and the sides and base are very thin. There shouldn't be any movement now ... 😃🪵👍

The wood was still very rough and the curve made it difficult to draw an accurate pencil line, hence the use of tape to provide a straight line for the saw cut 😃🪵👍

Sycamore trees are really better suited for growing in rural settings, where the nasty allergens emitted by the leaves…don’t trigger respiratory stress. Sycamore root systems can also be problematic, as they typically cause sidewalks & curbs to heave.
@HarrySmithShorts
@HarrySmithShorts 6 ай бұрын
Thanks Philip, typically you don't hear to many deaths as a result of the Hypoglycin A poison contained within the leaves or seeds. Probably more likely to be killed by a falling tree limb! Always good to be aware though 😃🪵👍
