Is this the best Spalting you've ever seen? I think the Spalting lines look superb, and so much better than I could have expected. The long black lines are perfectly highlighted by the white interior and the creamy colour of the untouched birch 🌲♥

You sawed off most of the bark inclusion at the beginning only to shave even more off with the woodturning process itself. They turned out great though! An odd couple out for a stroll, even the knots and inclusions added character to them! Absolutely stunning pieces Harry! You really found the characters in the grain this time! 😁👍👍

spalting is a new one on me. Is that the pattern in the wood created where shoots of branches have grown ?@@HarrySmithWoodturning
@ebwoodwork Жыл бұрын
@@Les-OZZYTHEOSCAR Spalting is the black lines in wood caused by a fungi in the tree. It is the beginning of the rotting process (i think) but if you cut the tree down on time you get the spalting affect without the wood being rotten. Hope this helps!
Beautiful pieces Harry hope you have a safe and Happy New Year

I have cheated. I bought a 6 inch chainsaw so when I need to do cuts like that, I could have a piece right on my lathe and do it really easy. I have nerve damage in my shoulders and down my back so trying to saw it like you’re doing hurts. But that little 6 inches chainsaw is fabulous. Why do you rub the shavings against the project before the cloth? The spalted wood is gorgeous and using a contrasting wood for the snowmen has made these really adorable. Great job!!

Very nice! I really need to get back to turning. Ever since I got my CNC machine, I haven't been on the lathe much.

Harry i'm totally new - just got a lathe and binje watching to learn. What is the rubbing of the item with shavings for?
@915greenhornet Жыл бұрын
Yeah I was thinking the same thing.
@jrclark222 Жыл бұрын
It’s for buffing. The shavings are the same hardness as the wood so should leave minimal scratches. Like superfine sandpaper
@HarrySmithWoodturning Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Gavin! Basically, I use the shavings to buff and lightly sand the sanding sealer after it has dried, it removes most imperfections in the sealer and allows for a smoother finish. Hope this helps 😁👍
