Hi Ahron! I’ve made hundreds of wood laminations for bandsaw boxes and have always had good luck with glue joints, but I’ve never used epoxy as an adhesive in that manner so it didn’t really occur to me that maybe I should have used wood glue, assuming that would have made it less visible. Next time I’ll definitely incorporate the line into the design as a burn line or strip of resin or constructing wood. For this one I’m just going to assume the burl is so beautiful you will be focused on that and not on the glue line 😉

Another option to eliminate any glue line on the outside of the finished mug. Move the glue line to the underside of the bottom. Start by turning a recess in what will become the lower end of the mug. Then mount a piece in the chuck and turn a matching plug. Install the magnets same as you did, except now, the magnets are in the plug. Glue the plug (while still on the lathe) and the mug blank together and complete the turning as usual. Hope this makes sense and you can understand the the glue line is now hidden in the base of the finished mug. The plug could be a parted off portion of the burl or most any wood.
@LisaRamlow3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave! That’s a great idea. I’ll do a little more experimenting on the next one. One of the reasons I made the cut line where I did is because I don’t have a hollowing system and the very end gets a bit dicey with so much hanging off the tool rest. I made the cut line right at where I stopped withe the smaller of the forstner bits which allowed me to hollow the bottom part, which was only a few inches deep at this point. So I’ll either do like you’ve suggested and plug the bottom (is this a good excuse to get a boring bar!?) or I’ll incorporate the glue line into the design, with either burn lines or a strip of resin or contrasting wood or something.

You are very creative with your setup at the end!! Your videos are great!! Thanks so much h for all the time I can only imagine these videos take!!
@LisaRamlow3 жыл бұрын
Hi Amy! I bought a bunch of burls from a woman whose husband had passed - he made bowls but he carved them. Most of them are super cracked and will require resin to make them solid enough to turn, but this one was solid enough to get 2 of these tumbler mugs out of, plus a bunch of smaller pieces for other projects. It came from here in west-central Michigan but I’ve never seen this kind of grain before. It’s just fantastic! I had the bbq rotisserie motor hooked up to the lathe when I coated the inside of the mug. 50rpm from the lathe would still be too fast. The resin self-levels nicely at whatever the rpm of the rotisserie is, I’m guessing somewhere between 2-5 rpm? The setup at the end for the off-lathe tumbler turner isn’t my design, I just watched a bunch of videos by epoxy tumbler makers and used them as a starting point. Whoever figured out the compression donut to hold the mug is a genius - way better than using the foam footballs stuffed in the cups! 😂 They are a bit time consuming that’s for sure. Shooting 3 camera angles makes editing more tedious but I like the variety of views so I just suck it up and get it done! 👍

@LisaRamlow3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! I think there are a couple of “versions” of this insert kit and maybe the reviews are referring to that one. I bought 2 of these kits and they have a screw-on lid with the little slider thing to cover the hole. The first one I made l was for a giveaway and the winner Mel chimed in here earlier saying the travel mug version 1.0 is all good so he hasn’t had any issues so far. Check the reviews and see if they are talking about a “friction fit” or “screw-on” lid and maybe that will help you sort them out.

I asked Mel about his mug leaking and he said the screw-on lid doesn’t leak, but the slider over the sippy-hole isn’t liquid tight if flipped upside down, which I would not expect it to be. Hope that helps!

That's really nice. I wonder if a Spray Epoxy, or even Lacquer would be a good hard wearing finish as well. I also wonder if using Rare Earth Magnets would work better with the Stainless Insert, but then the washer would also help add weight for balance. I'm going to have a look into some of these kits, esp. if they come out as good as yours. Oh, while I remember, I found the sound to be quite low in your video.
@LisaRamlow3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! I think a spray finish would work nicely too. These actually are rare earth (Neodymium) magnets, it’s just that most stainless steel is not really magnetic. There are some types that are slightly magnetic, but not enough. I may try some magnetic paint on the liner as opposed to the washer and see how that works out. Regarding the volume, I had someone tell me the shop sounds were way too loud when there was no voiceover and made it so he couldn’t keep the voiceover lid enough to hear without blowing him out when it went back to the shop sounds. I lowered the overall volume some, assuming you can turn it up but maybe that was too much? Can you increase the volume on whatever you’re watching enough to be viable or is it just too low all the way around?
@DiemenDesign3 жыл бұрын
I watched on my laptop, and increased the volume to 150% in the OS (Linux), and full volume with the YT Player, and was barely able to hear you speaking. Not sure what the other person is talking about with Workshop noise, I don't recall hearing that in any of your other videos.

That was actually my first thought after I realized the magnets wouldn’t stick to the insert - magnetic paint. But it’s like $35 for a small can so I thought I’d try this idea out first and see how it went. You’d only have to paint the very bottom on the insert, several coats would probably be sufficient as I have a pretty snug fit after the resin coat on the inside and it’s in no danger of falling out!

Hey Leo! This is a commission and an experiment so it was definitely more labor intensive than it could/should have been. If there’s one thing I’ve learned being a woodworker for 20 years is that our hourly rate is way below the poverty level 😂
@theguitarpicker3 жыл бұрын
It looks like the only reason you made the cut at the bottom was to install the mags, you can buy extra long drill bits, they are usually called aviation bits as they are used/originated with the aviation industry. They're not very expensive (compared to other woodworking expenses, they cost more than regular bits) and you could make the holes for the mags without cutting the blank.
@LisaRamlow3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! You’re right about the magnets but I also cut it there to make the hollowing a little easier. I don’t have a hollowing system or boring bar yet and to get to the bottom of the mug gets a little dicey with so much hanging over the tool rest. I have several pretty long drill bits (my dad was a machine builder/repair/tool & die maker and has a ton of tools he picks up at estate sales, etc) so once I get the hollowing end straightened out I can either drill thru the opening or use a plug on the end for the magnets. This was definitely an experiment! 😂 Thanks for the tips and for letting me know what those bits are called 😊
@chrisstewart82593 ай бұрын
Why not bore out the cup blank and make a "butt plug" for what will be the base of the mug. Make this plug out of a contrasting wood. You can then drill the base plug with the requisite holes to hold the magnets into that plug. Then glue that plug into the hollowed out cup. Then get the length right by slowly and carefully reducing the length of the top seating lip for the SS insert. This will overcome the glue line in the centre of the cup. PS - I make these cups myself here in Australia. But never done a removable insert type.

When using epoxy an amber colour hides joints best because epoxy joints have a visible thickness. Mixing wood dust into the epoxy hides the joint the best and does not affect the quality of the bond. Only sanding with a 60-80 grit sandpaper makes an ideal epoxy bond and getting the sanding lines to line up hides the joint because the coarseness of the sanding lets the two faces blend together.

@charliemckay64023 жыл бұрын
@@LisaRamlow Probably not helpful, but the academic difference between stainless steels is, "The defining factor of magnetism comes down to the steel's microstructure. Martensitic stainless steels (which have a ferritic microstructure) are magnetic. Austenitic stainless steels contain nickel and are non-magnetic." More important is that stainless steel is not stainless if it is deprived of oxygen or exposed to basic substances like bleach. Never use stainless steel below a water line on a boat, birdbath, etc.
