Woodturning Ambrosia Maple: The Worm Hole Bowl
I bought a kiln dried blank of ambrosia maple with the intention of making a yarn bowl, but after trying to cut the slot for the yarn on a practice piece, I decided I wanted to take a couple more practice runs before I attempt it on a nice piece of wood 😁
This blank is about 8”x8”x4” and the finished bowl is about 7.5”x3”
I used the Ack’s Products to finish this bowl

I wouldn't mind a few more explainations - partly because I don't undestand a lot of what I'm watching, and partly because - while not quite at the level of Bob Ross - I find her voice fairly soothing. Thanks Joseph! This is actually ambrosia maple and the coloration (and holes) are from the ambrosia beetle. No spalting in this one, but it sure is pretty! 😁

Me too - my favorite is cherry but I think it’s so cool how each wood has a very distinctive smell - most are good, a few are very stinky. Like green (wet or unseasoned) butternut. Blech!

Hi Charles! I’ve not turned it before but have been wanting to and am so glad I did! I’m really pleased with how this turned out. The Ack’s is great stuff and easy to use. I also use Brad’s wood paste and tung wax in some projects, which gives a lower luster/sheen - depends on what I’m looking for. Both are great people to work with and I’m happy to support small businesses in our community. 😁

OH MAN I wish more turners would step their curves before committing. It is a best practice that not enough turners use. Its a secret weapon for sure, although not much of a secret. I wish more people used the technique... it takes all the guesswork out of your profile.

It’s a particular grind that Stuart Batty perfected - 40deg bevel and 40deg wings. Look him up on KZbin - there are a bunch of videos where he’s done workshops with turning groups and explains/demonstrates. He also has a really awesome set of instructional videos on Vimeo and they are free. It’s a wealth of information.
