I have been doing wire inlay for about a year now. It started out as an idea, and as I fumbled through, made mistakes, and finally got it to work…..I find this on KZbin. Your attention to detail and preventative measures taken has won me over. I’m happy with my journey in this. Thanks for your efforts.

You could silver solder the copper ends together and then sand it smooth for a nicer join

When I was adding twisted wire to jewelry projects, I would clip the ends at an angle rather than straight across. By careful trials, I was able to make the join invisible. There was about 1/4 twist where the top overlapped the bottom. Might require using a pliers to slightly change the twist on the wire but the effect was worth the effort. Probably work on wood inlay as well. Thanks for sharing your work.

There's a jewlery trick of overlaying the ends in the final shape (i.e. if it's a circle, make it a circle with the ends passing each other) then cut both at the join at a 45 degree angle, that way they're a perfect match and the angled cut is easier to hide.
@RamDragon32
@RamDragon32 4 жыл бұрын
I use recovered electrical wire in my own wood projects (just thumb drives, so usually small LV wires, but I look for solid core so the twists are visible) and another trick I learned real early to make the joint invisible is to cut long, then file the ends flat. Doing that and using the angle lap trick you mentioned I can make joints completely vanish.

I have to say, the most beautiful the copper wire itself looked was just after you twisted it. the convexity of the curves of the twisted copper wire makes it looks beautiful. the twist of the metal itself is beautiful. with that in mind, it would be cool to see an inlay of copper wire where it wasnt cut in half by the sanding, but instead you got that full, wreathed copper wire look. i guess you would do exactly the same as this, but make the indentation for the wire inlay deeper, then fill it with a clear resin and sand til just above the wire. maybe there is some otherway anyway your work is incredibly beautiful and i enjoyed the video. just sharing my idea/2c

@@SpragueWoodturning Ummm...I am new to wood turning, but have lots of experience with making jewellery and doing wire work inset and so forth...and as I was watching this I kept thinking "WHAT ARE YOU DOING????" So firstly, a bit of masking tape on the inside and the outside of the bowl rim gives you a dam that will hold the glue and also allow some of the powder to sit proud.... which you want, as it will shrink when drying. The depth of your groove should always be a response to the twisted wire thickness, and preferably cut in two passes with a slight undercut, like this /_\ . then put some of your stone powder into the groove FIRST, then force the wire in. Now the stone will fill all the cavities in the twisted wire, and when you CA glue it, that will lock it into the shape of the groove.

Nice job. I am not used to inlay copper wired threads. But I did sometimes with flat aluminium inlaids or copper.... Since I worked in Switzerland and Tirol I used much more thick colored veneer inlaids (4 / 5 mm thick). Their tradition : they are used to incrust them around table or squarred feet or they compose naïve motives as a nest with birds.. Armorials... Etc. But this is coming originally from beginnings of marketry compositions on wood walls (landscapes and portraits of nobles... Geometrical motives as castles on chests of drawers facades in italy or france at 17 and 18th century. As they cut wood veneers by manual saw s (!) [and I did it myself sometimes "full manual work"... Exhausting job for sure ] thickness of veneer was often between 2 mm thick (to 4 or 5) . Sometimes much more and irregular. Then end of 18th c. Costs of wood increased (especially very nice exotic woods arriving in european ports becose of lesting boots coming back from carabean or south & north america after slaves transportation - africans or... Even white... as Irish in virginia.! ). And they lowered prices by organising workshops and "craftindustry of furniture" by specialisized people who knew how to provide thin veneer. Then, came time of meccanisation (first third of 19th) with the very first "veneer saws" yu can always see in action in paris old workshops of furbishers of veneers. ("scie au bois montant") . With those machines they succeeded / could get 12/10`mm to 9/10` sew wood which signed this period of production of marketry. After... during 20th c. woods were boiled first and then cut thiner (7/10`mm then 6 then 5.. 4!)... Then came with italiens.... Photography of nice wood.!!! False production. End of story... Furnitures same as shoe boxes... Sad times.

I’ve bought the white 1000 grit since shooting this video and they just don’t perform as we as the 0000 steel wool, if I was knocking down sanding sealer then they would probably do the trick but this finish is tough and durable. Thanks, Jim.

Sprague Woodturning Jim do you think the maroon (400 grit) or light gray (800 grit) scotchbrite pads would work or would they be too rough? What is the equivalent grit of the OOOO steel wool? Thanks Jim

Jeff Lynch I would definitely not use the 400, it’s too aggressive. The 800 might do the job. If you can get a variety pack with the different grits and then try them and see want works best for you. Amazon possibly?

The copper wire looks neat ground down flat into the herringbone pattern. It seems impossible to fill completely with soapstone or alabaster. I bet it would look really nice with clear resin, then you could see more of the copper wire twisting, shine and shadow.

When you are cutting what is effectively a hoop, don't snip the ends because they will squash , and lay the end over the start at the desired length and cut at 45 degrees form the top, and if you are really careful, you should be able to match the orientation of the "links" one each cut end

Lovely. This is only the second video I have seen using copper wire. The other showed a single wire round the outside. I have been putting some wire aside and feel more confident in trying it now . Just subscribed, many thanks, Jim at Montana Wood Art Bozeman MT.

I watched video of yours about what to do with your shavings, one thing I thought of was to if you had a large table, lay them out and cover them with clear Epoxy Resin to make a sheet of Resin wood, then cut it into strips with some of your Colourful left over Epoxy and make a Resin wood Bowl, what do you think Nicola from the UK.

I actually hate the look of wood shavings and resin. It’s just not my thing and would cost a ton of money and I really don’t think there’s much of a market for that kind of stuff. Thanks for watching

Lovely work, I really enjoyed seeing the skilled workmanship. Can I make a suggestion to flatten the twisted wire, this will enable more of it to be seen when sanded back. Also it can be adjusted to fill the groove more accurately.

I’m afraid if I’d flatten the wire it might look really uneven when sanded back, but you never know. Thanks 🙏

I think once you have the length cut, I'd put it back in the vise and solder the ends together so you have them lined up and you have a ring to glue into the groove. Just my .02. Looks great, Thanks
