I have a children's school chair, very old. I am sanding off the varnish and the woodgrain is just beautiful. Not knowing anything about wood, I somehow guessed it was walnut! I can't wait to finish it. I enjoy watching your process, even the mistakes can be beautiful. Thank you for sharing the beautiful pieces you create. Designer Epoxy

I would be surprised if it was walnut, but if you live in an area where walnut is plentifully then it could be. Every old school desk I’ve seen is made out of maple. Thanks for watching!

Isn't it funny how moving leads to downsizing? I love that it has prompted you to finish up some things you've had sitting around, and so beautifully too! I particularly love how the sparkly little "planets" turned out in that inlay piece. A friend of mine is a quilter. Quilters refer to unfinished projects as "UFO's" which stands for "Unfinished Fabric Objects." I guess in the wood shop you have..."UBO's?" "Unfinished Bowl Objects?" or "UTO's?" "Unfinished Turning Objects?" In any case, they are "unfinished" no longer and will be very welcome in their new homes!

Two more beautiful pieces, Jim! In regards to your walnut finish issues, I seem to remember reading years ago (more years than I care to admit) that gunstock makers have similar issues when they carve walnut gunstocks. I seem to recall that there’s some product they use to seal the grain which allows them to use walnut with beautiful figuring and still get a nice, uniform finish. Maybe there’s a stock maker out there who can give you some tips on what to do with your walnut bowls to get an even finish and show off the amazing natural beauty of the wood in your pieces.

These are perfect examples of your work when you were doing production material and I invite new subscribers to watch some of your early videos, pre-epoxy. That burnt natural edge is pure beauty. The contrast in color, plus the pencil spalting, make this art with a purpose. Chef's Kiss. The walnut inlay look like eyes staring out at you. As you say, whimsy. Awesome work, Jim.
