In this video I make a 10-1/2" x 4" bowl from butternut. The grain is awesome. I show an inexpensive and effective way to turn and finish the bottoms of larger pieces. I weight the finished bowl at the end of the video to show how light this wood is. I hope you enjoy and thank you for watching.

Lovely piece! Pretty grain! I have a piece of very soft wood to turn, so your comments, on how to deal with it, are very timely. Thanks!

You keep your tools nice and sharp and you're riding the bevel, so it's very gratifying to watch those chips fly. It DOES cut like butter! Ha ha.

Beautiful! I’ve had a big butternut down for 2 years now and am planning on cutting it up this year. I’m a new woodworker and approaching retirement so the butternut will see a lot of time in my shop. Your work is inspiring! Thanks!

Great video and a very nice bowl! I use hot glue quite often to stick blanks to a waste block, especially when the mortice or tenon would take too much of the piece away. hadn't crossed my mind too use it for finishing the bottoms though, cool tip 👍 (Edit - Also just learnt about milk glue, thanks again!)

Great Video Lkondike interesting tip using the board to turn the tenon off will remember that ( hopefully ) During the video you say you used more Yorkie grit than usual do you think this is because you dont use any sanding sealer before the abrasive paste ? good skills though

I meant in comparison with other woods I have use it on without sanding sealer. Thanks watching I appreciate it.

I only have 1 question is why you do not core that wood is so beautiful
@TheKlondikeCraftsman
@TheKlondikeCraftsman 3 жыл бұрын
I have cored some in the past and probably should do more often. I find though that it really doesn’t give you much of a blank from a piece this size. Thanks for watching Steven, I really appreciate it.

Beautiful bowl but I question the use of a wax finish for a bowl. How does this stand up to washing or is this only intended as an ornamental piece?

Hi , great bowl What speed do you run when adding Yorkshire grit? Michael 🇬🇧
@TheKlondikeCraftsman
@TheKlondikeCraftsman 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Yorkshire grit should go on at 350-400 RPM until the grit has broken down then you can speed it up to 600-700 to buff it into the wood. Thank you for watching!
