Beautiful, Gary! I too love the tri-color of the heart wood, sap wood, and bark. I also love the chatoyance! Beautiful piece. I found the thing in the closing shots: Seawater! Ha ha. Glad you could enjoy that time away enjoying God's creation.

Papa, A loverly bowl 😜. The pattern in the bottom looks like Saturn 🪐 and his rings. In the first picture, I do believe there is a seal swimming viewer’s right to left not too far offshore. Of course it could also be a dolphin . But they usually travel in pods rather than singly. Upon closer examination, I’ll stick with seal or otter 🦦. Keep the aspidistra flying! Paul

Thank you Ken. Doing a great finish is an art in itself. You sound very accomplished in that. As far as I am concerned it is the most critical part of the project. And nice shape and design is lost in a bad finish. Where as you can have a very odd non symmetrical piece that really shows itself off with a nice finish. Thanks for your comments and for watching. Walnut wood is usually pretty special & I love it. This piece of Black Walnut is quite brilliant. The grain through that dark hardwood is SO delightful & I love the sharp contrast with the wide band of sapwood topped off with the dark natural bark edge. It dried out really well to & took the brilliant finish 'to heart'. The shape too is beautiful & elegant. All in all, I think this is a very beautiful bowl Gary. Cheers, Don from South Aust.

Sorry I'm so late viewing this, Gary! Wow, that is some wonderful Black Walnut! From the moment you showed the raw piece, it was clear it was going to be special and it is! I'm amazed at the three main colors of this piece, the very dark bark, the sap wood and then that beautiful heart wood. I absolutely love the shape you chose for this bowl, so graceful! Amazing too, is the finish you got on this rather green wood. Really beautiful and with a great shine! Another excellent turning by one of my favorite turners and a fun video to watch! Oh, and it looks like the tide is going out in the last picture. I've been up and down the Oregon coast a few times but don't remember ever having seen the Devils Punch Bowl before. Very cool! 😊 Phil

Thanks Phil and no problem. For sure this was a nice piece of wood. I wish I would have taken a picture of the tree. They were offered $10,000 for it but just laughed. It came from a place called The Peachy Pig Farm. My nephews in laws have a farm and they sell fruits and berries as well as it is a you pick. I was concerned about the finish because it was such a fresh piece but it worked out ok. The tide was just going out that day. We got to ride a long ways the day before because the tide was out and the sand gets hard enough to ride. Not so much when it was in. Devils Punch Bowl is at Otter Rock which was 2.5 miles north of Beverly Beach. Thanks for watching my friend and take care, Gary

When I was young we had two Black Walnut trees in our back yard side by side. I hated those trees because I had to rake up the leaves and fallen nuts in the fall. Although the nuts were quite tasty, but the husk on them stained my hand black. Now that I do some woodworking and turning I wish I could get my hands on some wood from those trees. Beautiful piece Gary, love the contrasting colors and simple design. I hope there will be more Black Walnut in the future.

Very nice Gary! Thanks for the lesson on how to set up a chunk of wood for a natural edge. I will try to practice that when I get a chance. A beautiful piece. I love black walnut as well. I am surrounded by loads of it, and it is one that I have always loved to work with. If I ever get a chance, I could bring you a truckload of it. It is truly one of the beautiful woods. I have wanted to try to do a segment project using the dark and light sapwood from black walnut as different segments. Just wondering how that will turn out. In the meantime, thank you again for a beautiful project, and another good lesson. See you next week!
@ThePapa1947

Thank you Mark. On a lot of pieces you need to shim it up for making a flat spot to mount to. It really does not matter if the bottom is flat because that will be shaped in the turning process. I have saved a lot of English Walnut trimmings for segment work. Some of the light and some of the dark. I dried it in my cardboard drying box and showed that in a video awhile back. Thanks for watching, Gary

Thank you Dave! Yes it is a very pretty piece of wood. Going to be hard for me to wait to turn more so a twice turned bowl may be in the books. We had a wonderful time visiting with you as well. Sure glad you wife was able to be there as well or mine would have hauled me out a lot sooner. I think she can only listen to so much wood turning talk LOL. Great job! There's lot's of walnut around here. It's one of my favorite woods to work with. It looks good with or without the contrast. As for the worry of the bark coming off. I use ca glue all the way around the edge before I sand. Sometimes sooner. Happy Turning.

Very nice, turning a green piece of Boxelder live edge. Those types of bowls really highlight the contrasting grain and colors. I was glad to hear you explain about the tailstock getting in your way when doing the edge since when I was hollowing mine I was actually wondering what Gary would do. Also nice to hear the sounds of the tool “skipping” along the sides of the wood while turning. That vibration appears to be normal harmonic when the sides get to a certain thinness. Thank you for your instructions and guidance.

Thank you Lee. Boxelder live edge sounds very interesting. I have a piece of Boxelder given to me. Kind of an odd shape and plenty dry. I have not turned any of it yet. Big enough for a couple turnings. It is nice to have the tailstock against the piece when getting started on the inside but on a smaller piece it gets in the way real fast. Thanks for watching, Gary

What a perfect treatment of that piece of wood, Gary. When you first showed the polishing paste I was wondering if it was following Danish oil. I like the higher gloss of the poly and the chatoyancy it encourages, but it doesn't take away from the grain and contrast, either. I picked up a few things from your video that I needed for a current tricky project. A resin casting of a maple burl that was unexpectedly out of balance until I began hollowing and found the punkiness. Some of what I'm dealing with reminded me of you shear scraping the bark fuzz as well as one other cut you made. Glad you had such a great trip. Devil's Punch Bowl. Interesting and nice image. Canada lost "Teacup Rock" in Prince Edward Island from Hurricane Fiona. Huge rock with a narrow base not tipped over or nearby, just gone. Amazing formations and power. Have a great weekend.
