Mike demonstrates woodturning with a faceplate. Faceplates and faceplate rings can be a great way to hold some woodturning projects.

Mike, I have been watching and learning from your videos for a few years. Long before I even purchased a wood lathe. I just really want to thank you for your time and effort in sharing your knowledge and helping new turners like myself.

Thanks, Mike. Comprehensive video on face plate mounting. I like the Kreg 1-1/4" coarse screws for mounting the face plate because they are self tapping. One thing I did not hear you talk about was grain direction. My opinion is : never use a face plate for end grain mounting because screws can easily pull out of the end grain.

You are right that end grain does not hold screws as well as side grain. But, not sure I agree with never using endgrain on a faceplate. Still a good way to hold a vase or hollow form blank. Use more screws and maybe drill some in at an angle. Avoid pre drilling end grain. My, I left this out of the video, didn't I!

Thanks for this vid - your tips are always very useful. They often prod me into digging deeper so I can get a more in depth understanding of a tip since you can't go into fine details of every topic you discuss. Yes, the Google is you friend. Take screw fasteners - Why are there so many kinds ? What's wrong with sheet rock screws ? What improvements have been made to wood screws over the last hunnert years ? yada yada yada -Mike

Sheet rock screws are too brittle and doo not have the shear strength needed.

Thank you for your videos very informative! I have a quick question I am a beginner in woodturning and will be purchasing the Grizzly G0462. I am a musician and want to make my own conga drums, the dimensions are 30 in in height and 11 3/4 for the diameter of the conga head. What would I need to hold the shell stave? since it will be hollow on both sides, Thank you in advance, I have been searching for answers and no luck

I think you will need to construct some type of drive plate, think face plate with a large plywood disk, with some ability to center the drum. Perhaps with a foam surface. Somethink similar mounted on the tailstock. At least that would be my guess as I have never turned a drum.

Garry not Linda. Just a note about the screws. Those round head sheet metal screws that you were using are not designed to self drill they work best when the correct sized pilot hole is drilled. Don't try that trick with side grain on a board. I stood and watched a "professional" door installer use one to install the door closer and split my jam. I nearly threw that bonehead off the place!

Thanks. Makes sense to always drill first on dry wood.
