Making urns for our loved ones a difficult but rewarding project. Brought to us by Squarespace. For 10% off your first purchase, go to: squarespace.com/makesomething
In this heartfelt woodworking project, I create custom urns to honor the memory of our beloved pets. This journey started with locally sourced white oak and the goal of crafting something meaningful and lasting. This video is not about sadness but a celebration of the joy our pets bring to our lives. We explore the woodworking process, from selecting the right wood to designing unique urns that hold both ashes and cherished keepsakes. You'll see the intricate details like miter joints, splines, and custom inlay banding that make these urns truly special. While creating these urns, I'll also share tips on batching out woodworking projects efficiently. Plus, you’ll learn how to incorporate thoughtful design elements to elevate simple boxes into works of art.

The love from a dog is a reminder to us how we should love everyone as the Creator of all things has told us. Do not judge, treat others as you wish to be treated. Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who have trespassed upon us. Live in the moment. All lessons dogs are trying to show us everyday, the living proof right in front of our eyes! I am not a religious man, I am a spiritual one!

In the last 3 years I made 2 urns, for my parents. Watching a loved one slip away from cancer gives you such a helpless feeling and being able to go to the workshop with a real purpose helped alleviate the feeling of helplessness. (Also, dimensioning rough lumber by hand is very physically cathartic!)

I've done a few small projects here and there over the years, but a few years ago someone gave me an entire piece of purple heart lumber that I let hang around and around, mainly because I felt I didn't have the skill to make anything that would do the wood justice. Then my mom passed away in Dec 21 of COVID. I knew immediately I was going to make her an urn from the purple heart, that that's why I was given it. I found some plans online for an urn and made it out of that purple heart. It ain't perfect by any means, but it is perfect for her. It is by far the single most meaningful thing I have made.

I knew when I saw the thumbnail that this was going to be a tough one to watch. Just laid my best friend of the past 20 years to rest a couple weeks ago, my Miss Kitty. I didn't have her cremated, but the casket I made for her was absolutely the best "box" I've ever made. Not the best as in my favorite, but the one that came out the best and that I put the most care and work into, because she definitely deserved nothing but the best for all of the love and happiness she had given me for the last 20 years. I'm so glad to see that I'm not alone in my grief or in my desire to make my best friend one last special project! Thank you for this video, and to all of the other wonderful people in these comments thank you for sharing your thoughts and stories as well and know that you also are not alone in your grief... I miss you, Miss Kitty 🐈‍⬛ thank you for 20 wonderful years and countless beautiful memories 🖤

Literally started this morning on the second urn for a friend’s dogs. When he asked, I was immediately overwhelmed with the idea that this is the greatest gift of art, to provide someone with comfort and solace in a time of need. It’s such an honor that they trust me to do this for him and his family. What better reason to learn and develop art than this? Thank you so much for sharing Dave! In my grandparents house, just outside the bathroom they had four framed drawings of some cats and dogs. The dogs are stood on two legs and are peeing up the wall with some cats looking from above. the next one is the cats peeing at the dogs and the next is dogs retaliating and so on! I spent 20 years of visiting in the summers and absolutely loved them, thought they were hilarious and always said I wanted them. A year before my nan died she bagged them up and sent me off with them. They then spent 10 years in that same Argos bag in a cupboard as I always had the plan that one day I would be a good enough woodworker to make a frame for them all to mount in as the pictures and the frames are the piece collectively. This year I finally made that frame and it now hangs just outside my bathroom door. It's an American white oak frame with finger joint corner made with a jig made by you on this channel! That's what woodwork is to me too, meaningful items that are just much more special than a bought item.

I got into woodworking heavy after my Dad passed away. I didn't want any Mom to have to put his military flag in a cheap made Amazon display. So I made one out of walnut that my Dad had laying around for years. I knew a little bit to get started. After 8 months of watching KZbin videos like yours I was finally confident in tackling it. Damned if I didn't find talent I didn't know I had. I must naturally get it from my father. He was a woodworker. Btw the flag display turned out amazing. I wish I could share pictures with you. Thanks for all the lessons and inspiration. You're an awesome dude.

Thanks for this video. You brought back some fond memories of woodworking with meaning. A family that were neighbors to us were like family, which never changed after we moved to another state. One of the children in their family became a gifted woodworker as an adult. When his mother passed he made a beautiful urn for her cremains. My mother asked him after the funeral if he would make one for her when she passed. Several years later when my mother died, he called and told us of her request. He was experiencing serious health issues at the time, but he insisted that he honor her wishes. The box he made was a masterpiece, with personalizations that he knew she would have loved. We only had a brief time to appreciate the beauty of the urn before she was interred next to my father, but the love and sentiment is more beautiful than the piece itself. The last gifts he made for his mother and mine are by far the most cherished of all of the wonderful pieces he ever crafted.

Make Something that Means Something. What a great new catchphrase and philosophy. I recently made a simple shadow box for my dad's military career (he's 80 now and eschewed fanfare at the time). But showing and explaining it to him (he struggles to remember things now) and to all the grandkids was a true pleasure. And now I'm thinking with wet eyes about my beagle Violet who we said goodbye to a couple of years ago, after 15+ years of companionship. I know that that little ceramic pawprint they give you is kind of mass-produced, even kitschy, but it means the world to me.

I have been REALLY enjoying your new style. I liked the old stuff also, but the refresh was nice. As long as you do what makes you happy, you'll find your audience. You come across as a kind, caring, genuine person. You will always have an audience just being you.

Love the new style. I heard you talking about it on the podcast and was in total agreement with you. I have just started making videos again, inspired by you and your podcast mates and am finding the editing tough. Got 2 filmed but none finished. Making an urn for a loved one is tough but rewarding. I like knowing that Mum is in a place built with love

You have no idea how much I’ve learned from you and your channel over the years. I’ve been a maker now for about 7ish years. You and Drew Fisher have taught me and inspired me. You and James (I think) bourbon moth have inspired me to change up my tool game to Festool. I too have changed up my video editing for my crappy videos. lol. I’m a huge dog lover myself and I’m truly sorry for your loss.

Thank you. This touched my heart and motivated me to make the urns I’ve been putting off. Your sincerity and nature are seen thru this. There’s no love like what we share with our animals. Im convinced they’ll be there waiting on us when we cross.

I loved this video. The boxes are really showing the amount of love you had for each of these furbabies. While I really enjoy every piece you make for the rental house, this video really touched a different part of my heart.

It took me 2 years to be able to make an urn for my dog. Every time I started I broke down. Every time I lose one it's a huge part of me gone. Every one of them I've lost is with me, in my nightstand but in all honesty, much as I love them all both my cats and dogs, I can't do it any more it just hurts too much. This must have been one of the hardest videos to make, well done for keeping it together on camera - though I suspect there were a few close calls and retakes. They are just such amazing creatures and our bond with them is something so very special.

Thank you, those are beautiful keepsake boxes to hold on to your memories. If I had something like that and people asked what I keep in them, I would just tell them, that is where my heart is.

Thank you for all your entertaining , educational and inspirational videos. I have been a fan for over 8 years at least and this video hit me hard. I have lots of special pieces of wood that I have held onto for longer than my wife thinks I should and we lost our amazing Pomeranian (Sir Paddington) over 2 years ago after 11 great years. I need to take one of these special pieces of wood and make something out of it to store Paddington and his keepsakes in. Keep it up! You do make videos that mean something to MANY, MANY people! Much Love, Chris J.

Bless you and keep making these wonderful projects and videos!

My dog passed away 2 years ago. I bought a nice slab of walnut to custom make an urn for him. Better than the reg box the vet put him in.. still haven't made it. For some reason every time I sit down to do it.. I do another project instead. Maybe I'll finally do it this summer.. Maybe. You're a good dude David.

Your comment at 11:00 about covering mistakes reminded me of what I was told decades ago. "Doing joinery, prepping , finishing, etc. is the result of skill and experience. Hiding mistakes is artistry. This video was especially appropriate as I am currently making my own urn. Some people freak out about this. But, after 50 years of woodworking, I would prefer to be kept an urn I made with my own 2 hands instead an urn made in a factory where I would have been a stranger with a credit card. This format was great. I am subscribed because I just love watching your delivery, message, meaning, passion, etc., etc. Be you, man. God bless.
