Just made one of these this evening with an angle grinder, and it kind of ended up looking like the Bearkat scraper. It was definitely a lot of fun doing it with the angle grinder, especially smoothing the edges after cutting. It was really satisfying, kind of like using a spokeshave, but just with a lot of noise and sparks. Good manly stuff! My fire alarm didn't like it though, it kept going off every 5 minutes!

Tin snips! Of course! Thanks! Looking forward to making mine. I have a 100+ year old Woodworking book by Paul N Hasluck that says to use old saw blades as well because you want a hard metal.

Thanks for putting the glove on. I knowww that had some serious sharp edges. OH! Wayyyy back about I guess 20 years ago I was working with my dad. I forgot what we were working on. We had to scrape the layer of paint, poly, and some other stuff. Don’t ask me what the other stuff was... probably lead for all I know. He went to town to get some liquid stripper and I grabbed one of his old metal sheetrock knives, broke the handle off and used it. So we saved a couple of bucks there once we returned the stripper. So yeah if you need to do a large area, make a 12” scraper!!!

Damn! After your comment on a different video I made a card scraper from an old pulse hardened tenon saw, I had heaps of trouble getting it to do curls and thought it was due to my poor sharpening though it turns out it’s because I tried it on pine, did not know that pine does that thanks for the info

Maybe its because Europe, but here the diy stores carry these square scrapers (not curved ones though). (Dat zeg ik, gamma) so i think I will be on the lookout for cheap old rusty saws to repurpose. (And today i learned that i need an old diamond cutting wheel to make a drawknife too.... (Did you see that John Heisz video?)

you might. the steel might be a bit thin but some people like thin. I like it to be about .03" always worth giving it a try. But most Antique stores have a bunch of saws floating around that go for $3-$5. Looking forward to what you make!

@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 8 жыл бұрын
About 8 minutes to cut it and then another 15 to file it down. even with shooting the video the whole thing only took 45 minutes. a rectangular card I could probably turn out in less then 10 minutes. once you get the hang of it you save so much time on sanding!

Nice! It must have been a pain to cut that hardened steel with the pliers.:D
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 8 жыл бұрын
Most old saws are not hardened that much. Because you still need to be able to sharpen them. It makes it shear fairly easily. Also, that makes it fairly brittle and I can snap off the extra bits.The whole cutting was only about 8 minutes. most new saws over harden the teeth so you can not sharpen them easily any more and they are brittle so when they are dull you just throw them out.
@Cactusworkshopchannel

+Wood By Wright I see! Interesting! Not a recycling culture anymore... :P in any case, truth is you dont need the hardest steel to cut wood :) thanks!

Why do people insist on using files without a handle, I have seen so many accidents where the pointed end has dug into the hand and it can make a nasty cut that can take a long time to heal. most woodworkers have some method of making handles for their tools, it does not have to be pretty just functional.I am sorry to go on about this but it is one of my pet hates. keep safe and enjoy woodwork
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 8 жыл бұрын
+John Fithian-Franks so true. I completely know what you are saying. It is high on my list of things to make. Hopefully in the next month. But unwell then I keep the point out of my palm and choak up on the file so if I slip the point is alredy past my hand. You will see a video on makeing Handel's soon though.

The newer videos for the last few years are no talking. That is to differentiate from the talking on the How To channel. The fans voted on calling this the ASMR channel. Most of the new videos fit that well.

@@WoodByWright just turning the gate up on a mic does not an asmr video make…..neither does just not talking It’s a fact that most of the videos on this channel are either only coincidentally asmr or not at all The rest of your content is very good, but irrespective of “fan voting” this channel seems a bit of a grift with how it’s labelled
