The old big band drum sounds, in this era, were like cannons. This is just before they started muffling the drums and putting mics on them. This is a sound to die for.

I remember hearing this a long time ago What I liked about it was the mutual respect that Woody and Buddy had for each other Both leaders trying to keep the big band legend going even tho rock and roll dominated Now remember whenBuddy did Hi Fi drums with Woody? well a lot of drummers who never heard of buddy took an astonishing listen and admiration for buddy after hearing this The clarinet and the drumming is what makes every one realize that there is more to music than just guitars and sound amps Sean you always come up with the fantastic charts BOOM

I was lucky enough to see these two big bands together in the early Eighties at Gorham High School, Maine. I think it was supposed to be at the college next door originally, but they went with the High School for some weird reason. They just rolled the baby grand across the big stage between sets. Both bands played their guts out, back, to back, to back. Myself and my band mates didn't stealthily record it somehow, and we kicked ourselves in the ass later.

I spent time with Buddy and when he was in his Groove you could not stop him, he could make you leave the establishment with you head on backwards. He could Dance all over that Drum Set and not lose a spec of Time. Powerful and exciting DRUMMER. One of a kind as they would say.

Woody couldn't hire Buddy becz the band had to vote. It was a cooperative venture. So it's gratifying to see they got together for this, w/ Buddy playing on Rufus Jones' set. I would've liked to have heard the backstage patter between Rufus & Buddy, two undisputed masters! And Woody adored Buddy!

Were you there? “The band had to vote”??? Woody and Bill Byrne did the hiring.

@@rmo52 No, but Mel Torme was, & he wrote a book about Buddy & it's in there. U're apparently unfamiliar w/ both.

When Woody first organized his band, in 1936, it was a cooperative band with all the members having a say. How long this policy could be sustained is the question. I would guess that, by World War II, it wasn't in effect, if not earlier.

Woody wasn’t hiring people based on band voting any more than Buddy, Maynard etc were.

Jo Jones was one of the greatest drummer technicians of the 20th Century. His rhythmic style and mix of tempos was superb. I find his use of 2 floor toms very interesting. I'd like to try that myself.

Was he playing double bass at the start? I think so! This selection/chart had components of the drum battle arrangements between Buddy and Krupa along with the structure of Artie Shaw (as created by Woody). But the 'attack melody' is Chick Webb. (Buddy loved him too). Rufus 'Speedy' Jones was a monster in his own right. The first time I was Rufus was on TV with Count Basie. Was doing cross overs, round and round, faster and faster....what a visual! Great find on this selection!

No way did Buddy know this chart or rehearse anything. And it’s only near the end, I think, where Woody realizes just how responsive ol Bernard was. When would he comes back in after a lot of drum solo and you can tell, Buddy’s glad he came back in. And he’s right on everything Woody and the band did. Absolute radar.

Word has it that there is a tape recording of Buddy Rich playing with the Basie big band....read a comment by a bandsman traveling with Tony Bennett on tour who said Tony had a copy of it and carried it while on tour. Any ideas on this?
