To expand on the Rocky 2 analogy: Even though Apollo creed won, it was a close match. Rocky really came out on top with a newfound fanbase and reputation, while Apollo was deemed washed up. The story of Pats Dad being banned from winning money reminds me of my time clearing out local tournaments in Magic the Gathering In Taiwan there is an abundance of card game stores who were able to hold tournaments that payed out quite alright (winner gets a display, which is like 100 bucks and a chance of competing for a plain ticket to the pro tour) We were a relatively small community all things considered, so when I unemploymed and had a bunch of time on my hand, I got to clean out almost all of the tournaments. But the booster packs were all but useless to me and I was extremely broke. So the local players offered to buy up all my packs for a discount and that how I survived for like a year. I became known as the guy who always had packs to sell. Most stores were ok with it but some were not very happy and banned me from playing in the smaller tournaments. Which I found pretty funny.

Few things about this: 1) Fighting games are generally less popular than most other genres of competitive games. A million dollars is a great way to get a wide array of people to pay attention and get competent at something when they otherwise would not. 2) Imagine some would argue that Street Fighter is a "boomer fighting game" because it is generally slower and has a long history. Therefore there's probably a decent amount of people that haven't played it (or say they haven't touched it) out of some form of social stigma. 3) Legacy skill can take you far, but can also make you more predictable. Your reflexes also slow with age. Meanwhile younger people generally have more free time, giving them plenty of opportunity to become good at something with the proper motivation. 4) From what I've been told, there's a rather large portion of the LGBT+ community that are avid video game players (something about it being a hobby you can enjoy by yourself without being judged for who you are). It wouldn't surprise me if there were some killers in the mix. I think there's going to be some serious upsets as well known community members get trounced by unknown faces. It's easy to forget just how small the FGC actually is in the grand scheme of things. So I wouldn't rule out a surprise showing from a couple of queer 18 year olds that are unbeatable at fighting games.

If a veteran is following a well practised sequence, somebody doing something that breaks that can either mildly disruptive to completely flow breaking. To be clear I'm not actually expecting veterans to not to make up most of top 8's, nor do I think we're going have somebody as eccentric as SonicFox win overall. However with what is assuredly going to be a large influx of people we've likely never seen before, I think that we're likely to have quite a few upsets and people outside of the traditional demographics make waves.
