Ghost of Tsushima baffles me because it's like...that game is ALREADY basically a movie. The battles are framed like a movie. It uses real people as the models for the characters. It literally has a mode named after the director whose films it is inspired by.

Hollywood seems to exclusively pick the games that make for the most generic movies like Uncharted, cause even if executed well, Ghost of Tsushima and Uncharted are just trying to be a playable blockbuster movie. I mostly get where Pat is coming from with John Wick, but I find the 1st movie's drive being "man wants revenge for his dog and has to embrace the lifestyle he swore off" suprisingly effective and gripping even if it is basic. it's moreso that this plotline reached its natural conclusion by the end of the movie so the sequels dont get as much meat in comparison.

I actually think the second one is really good, even on par with the first one, as it cashes in on what Winston said in the first movie. But it should have ended with John being killed for doing business on Continental Grounds. The third is weightless in comparison to the first two because you know they are now trying to milk these movies dry.
@BobtheX
@BobtheX 2 жыл бұрын
@@jwm1444 My biggest problem with John Wick 3 is that John is surrounded by doggos that whole movie and HE DOESN'T PET ANY OF THEM. This dude's love for a dog was literally the inciting incident of the whole fucking series but the movie didn't spend any time re-humanizing John by giving him a moment to just play with a cute dog. Literally just one scene of John playing with Halle Barry's dogs would have made the two hours of violence actually meaningful.

Here's a secret for you. People that end up in high level executive positions are BAFFLINGLY stupid. Their inability to understand even basic risk is what allows them to get lucky enough to have a mega hit. Because no SANE and INTELLIGENT person would take those risks. Combine that also with a large incidence of narcissism and you get a bunch of lucky idiots who see a potential big money-maker and think they're the smart chosen one that will figure out the solution to a problem all their peers didn't. The truth is, video games make so much money that none of the guys making decisions can actually resist trying to jump across the massive chasm between them and movies to make a bridge. They can't wait for experts to DESIGN AND BUILD that bridge, because all those other guys jumping off the cliff might get there first.

A Streets of Rage movie could work if it is constructed like an operatic ballet: I'm absolutely serious. Every scene of dialogue between characters must serve only to establish that they are Good Guys or Bad Guys in the campiest, most melodramatic fashion, then everything else consists of long meticulously choreographed fight scenes set to dance music. If the focus isn't exclusively on martial arts as a performance art (which it totally can be) and on choreographing it to music, then it won't play.

Woolie gives these people far too much credit because if they dont look at the final product how TF are they gonna bridge any gaps in understanding they have with the actual thing they're trying to adapt. it's like saying you went to Europe and looked around for a bit to get the feel for an assassin's creed adaptation but you dont even know how TF Altair or Ezio were even characterized through the story nor how the secret history in their era's actually played out. people knew the full context (the clipped bit was just more easily memed) it's just that all that meant was that they didn't view the games, THE MAIN PRODUCT OF HALO, as worth investing in for their HALO adaptation. full context or clipped you dont really get a better picture lest we forget that they worked with people who for the very next game after splitting with Bungie thought master chief WASNT the main character of the series... and this halo show seems to agree to some extent

You don't have people like Stanley Kubrick or Alfred Hitchcock doing their best to translate a story into a different medium and making changes he feels as necessary to enhance it, you just have wannabe Verhoevens lashing out at the source material and/or the people who liked it.

Sure, the game is about Jin's struggle and shit but i played that game like it was DMC. There's some cool stuff that could be done in live action with that combat system as a base.

Honestly the Ghost of Tsushima movie seems like a potential disaster in the making at this point. The choice of director is just so tonally wrong compared to the things we've seen from him. And then there's of course the whole thing about it being set in Japan. At least they hired a part Japanese american guy to write the script (Takashi Doscher), but unless Sony is truly willing to commit to putting money into research & costumes & actually filming in Japan on Japanese historical sets, this movie is just going to feel like a cheap american wapanese knockoff instead of the love letter to Kurosawa (& Japanese cinema) that the game basically was.

I don’t care about the race of the people making the movie. Race has no hold on a quality of writing and feels vaguely racist whenever people say it. On that same not the guy working on this movie is just a bad move
@haski002
@haski002 2 жыл бұрын
@@Broomer52 I'm not talking bout race tho, I'm talking about culture. Someone who's part japanese has most likely got a better understanding & a personal connection to japanese culture, and is less likely to make mistakes than someone who's not. ofc i don't really know much about this dude, but he seems infinitely better equipped to write & tell a story about a japanese dude than famous white dude writer #45 Edit: I just realized that you were probably talking about the director being white not the writer being part japanese. Ah well. For me the writer is probably more important, as long as the director isn't treated as a god.

@@esotericclues3126 yes and? they had plenty of japanese american & japanese people involved in making the game. They still visited Japan & modeled their assets of what they saw there. They hired the literal legend Shigeru Umebayashi to do part of the OST. What I'm worried about is that Sony's gonna cheapen out, put some random asian guy in a kimono in one of those virtual sets & go "whatever that's close enough" when the level of care & dedication that went into the game is so high
@RavenCloak13

@@haski002 You say that but nothing about Doscher says he would actually KNOW more about Japanese culture then the guys who went out and... did tons of research on the subject and already liked the stuff they based the game around that was said love letter to Kurosawa and Japanese cinema in general that was also greatly LIKED by the Japanese. Though the game did have inaccuracies but that was simply because they wanted to emulate more Kurosawa films then being historically accurate and that was pretty obvious. The films Doscher has been apart of also don't really show ANYTHING about him knowing or not knowing about Japanese culture and instead would more show him knowing about American culture though he also did documentaries so at least we know he would probably do research. However, they shouldn't need to do much as Naughty Dog did a bunch and they are supposed to be working with the production team based on the interview Stahelski did. You also admit your just assuming Doscher would know better based on his ethnicity. Which is racist. It's like saying "Yeah he knows kung-fu or is good at math cause he's Asian". Hell, lets actually look at Stahelski and John Wick again. He is a stuntman. His filming of action scenes and angles is really good and work for the Kurasawa style they would want to portray. Pat says he wouldn't work for the tone of the story but reminder, the beginning of John Wick was a slow burn. John's having bullshit after bullshit happen to him and building up the reason for why he goes out on his crusade. This actually works well with Jin's story, you just have to give more scenes of Jin being a bit more contemplative between action scenes which John Wick did. Hell the animal connection will work well to endearing people to Jin like it did in the games like gaining the horse and naming it, going around and following the fox, enjoying the nature of the world in general. The actual plot structure will be pretty easy to make a film though feel like it still be better as a TV show to give more moments but your going to have to cut a bunch of stuff down. Less of the game sides to it and will probably have a few time skips. What you SHOULD be worried about is that producers in Sony fucking things up. Like were not even hearing anything about the games actors being used in the film so they might be getting new actors with more recognizable names to play the characters... EVEN THOUGH THEY ALREADY HAVE THE FUCKING GAME CAST!

I don't really have high expectations for it but a ghost of Tsushima would probably be oka not great but something new to watch, I'm just basing this on the last samurai movie I watched the 47 ronin, keanu fighting a dragon at the end was such a stupid ending but still fun to watch. Twisted metal and streets of rage though idk, I kinda liked the first death race so id be up for it but there's barely anything there outside character endings and if streets of rage does like a warriors/fight club thing it could be ok.

There's no reason why good stories and art styles shouldn't be adapted well, other than just a lack of respect or understanding. We figured out book>movies, book>games, comic>movies, games>books... basically every combination can work, but yeah hollywood seems really hung up on putting effort into game adaptations.

It Infinity bothers me when I hear directors trying to take a game, with an already amazing story. Knowing normies don't care about videogames so if this show trends it'll be BECAUSE of the games fans. And just say "ya I'd rather stuff my own shitty garbage opinion into how this story should be done cuz I know better I studied a Dutch angle :)" like. These stories/games popped off cause it's good to begin with. Pay some respect to people who are sometimes better than u, even if u think their art is "low brow" compared to u. Because sometimes lowbrow Is better than a pretentious shit show.
