Which is better, for an RPG to give you wide open exploration and a sense of adventure at the expense of balance, or an excellently curated linear sequence of well-paced narrative beats and set pieces at the expense of freedom? FF6 says FUCK choosing, you get both.

I totally see what Woolie is saying about the reason why the boss looking the way it looks makes the boss cool, not just the cool design. Like the Master from fallout 1 or the prime Metroid from Metroid prime, the story of WHY makes the boss memorable and interesting way more than just having cool designs.

He also misunderstands the symbolism and story reasons behind most FF bosses he cites. Sephiroth becomes Bizzarro (or Rebirth) Sephiroth because he is being reborn as a god, and Safer Sephiroth is how symbolic of him being a fallen angel reaching for the Absolute - Final Fantasy VII has heavy Neo-Platonic influences in addition to the Jewish Mysticism. And he has a single wing because he is "incomplete". His goal is to bring all of the Planet's Life into himself, becoming "complete". Ultimecia is a parasite to other Sorceresses. So what does her final form include? A lower part of her body, a distorted mirror image of herself, that she draws magic from. Seymour transforms into something akin to a Fayth, then an Aeon and finally something abstract and transcendent once he decides he has grown beyond the tenants of his faith.

Woolie talking about it reminded me of how much more intense those final boss battles in jrpgs were for me playing as a kid, back when I was still easily impressed by games. Final bosses usually take the longest to kill, and they can wipe your whole party out in a single turn, so against bosses like Kefka I would always get really nervous and anxious until the battle was done. And its make those moments really memorable too.

I had the misfortune of discovering FF6 right in the middle of FF7 mania in the 90s, because I didn't have a Playstation. In retrospect, I can understand why it's all anyone wanted to talk about at the time, but it was really disheartening how much 6 fell under 7's shadow in my school days and it was always hard to get people to give it a chance. It's really gratifying to hear it still hit someone this hard so many years later.

The ending of FFVI is the best of any game I've ever played, because it's basically twenty-plus minutes of denouement not only for the main characters, but for nearly every side character, situation and location you'd been through during the game- and I was so invested in every last part of it that at no point did I ever get bored or impatient. IV gets a lot of points for being the first game to do a lot of things, so I think it would be particularly interesting to someone like Woolie who likes the history aspect of these older titles. V introduced blue mage, time mage, samurai, and more. It also has by far the deepest "building your characters' abilities" system of the first 6 FFs. Not to mention how many other classic FF novelties such as Moogles originated in V. IV is a fantastic game, but to talk about "innovation" it actually went backwards from III if anything, with the job system being completely hacked in favor for characters having linear growth.

I missed out on all the big RPG’s on the SNES, aside from Super Mario RPG. The final boss and finale of FF6 still blew my brain to the back of the room when I played through it on the SNES Classic a few years ago. Could not imagine seeing that as a little kid in ‘94. Side note: Since I played FF6 after FF15, FF15’s “World of Ruin” was much less of a colossal letdown than it probably was for most people. What a contrast in game design philosophy, eh!?

Regardless of anything else, getting to experience FF6 if you never had before means you need to think of things this way: Those of us who grew up having played it lived a life where FF6 was the gold standard of what a game's story could be, what it's final boss could be. It practically formed a litmus test we could judge other games by for decades because so much of it does still hold up.

My dream FF6 remake would see the team actually create dialogue and new scenarios depending on which characters you have managed to have join your party, and based on how the party is laid out. Obviously that would be extremely difficult given how large the cast is, but it would add so much more. One of my biggest gripes is how a lot of characters seem to just complete their arcs and remain functions until you get to a point where they are relevant again. Oh, thank goodness this got clipped. I was dying to see Pat’s face about the Limit Breaks when I heard the podcast. Until DFFOO, where all FF6 special attacks are named after the Desperation Moves, I had no idea they even existed. I don’t blame Pat for not knowing. Some moves also look awesome. It’s insane most of us never saw them.

This video is precious to me. It captures so many of my thoughts and feelings from playing/watching all 3 games (though in my mind FF5 also needs a shoutout) Even Pat's reactions to the desperation moves were spot on (though I don't have the FF14 experience he does) Thanks for the ride, my friends. I knew it would be epic, but it turned out be something really special.

Kefka was my favorite villain from a video game. He doesn't have a tragic past. He isn't a sympathetic villain, and he didn't become evil because he was betrayed by one of the heroes. He's just an asshole. He's an asshole, and he enjoys every second of it, plus he's really funny and comically evil. You never see a villain who is simultaneously funny and serious, but Kefka makes actually funny jokes one moment and murders billions of people the next. A rare breed of villain.

I looked up the desperation moves and I'm surprised how few people saw them because the odds look pretty decent. 1/16 chance at less than 1/8 health but it can't happen in the first 26 seconds of a fight. Then again I guess everyone tries to stay topped off.

I'll have to fight Woolie on this. Lavos has by far the best lead up to the final battle. It's meant to look like a weird humanoid entity. Lavos and Humans are intertwined, the boss rush represents its dominance over time and the planet's lifeforms, that are all now him. The final battle mimics the party itself, as not even the world Lavos consumed could do it.

I remember him as this cool, stoic ninja, but now after watching woolie play the game it seems like he was just a deadbeat who ran from his friend, ran from his family and then ran from life entirely. Woolie doesn't seem to know but the bugs he mentionned were specific to this new version, the Pixel Remaster. The GBA and previous Steam versions were quite bug-free compared to this one. Also I'm a bit confused about his "user path zero" thing. It's not zero since some players experience Desperation Attacks or encounter Death Gaze naturally. I experienced a couple DA myself and it was awesome because they saved my skin from a nasty boss (almost everyone dead, your final character is in critical and because you know a phoenix down wouldn't help, you decide to attack one last time. One chance out of 8 for a DA if enough time passed). I love this, it's the little bit of randomness that makes all FF6 playthroughs unique.

Pat's comment about FFVII having the best beginning, while FFVI has the best ending part, is actually super accurate. I love both games but I don't really start getting into FFVI till Mount Koltz or whatever, and even then, I'm like rushing to get through that first 1/4th of the game to get to all the good stuff and then you get the world of ruin and it's like a timeout but also like "you lost, you got no fighting to do now" but then that final dungeon and final boss tower is great. FFVII's beginning is STRONG, the entirety of Midgar is good but I think FFVII ends rather abruptly. It's all good, I love when Cloud is out of commission and the others have to man the ship for him, and then you get him back, and IMMEDIATELY "go save Midgar, go through the northern crater, final boss, ending now!" I wish there was more stuff between there. Like, plot wise, excluding side quests.

She doesn’t really have wings more like fleshy flaps on her back. The whole one wing angel thing with Sephiroth is supposed to be allusion to Lucifer, he was an Angel of light i.e a hero who became evil. But as Pat said eventually stylistically its just “Wouldn’t it be cool if Sephiroth had a black wing coming out of his back”.

Yes, Jenova Cells mutating his body. Sephiroth only has a wing in FF7 in his final boss form, it's only because the insane popularity of the character, phrase and song "one winged angel" that every appearance he's made after FF7 has him contractually obligated to walk around with 1 wing; it's literally nowhere else to be found in FF7 besides the final boss fight after Bizarro Sephiroth.
@ultraspinalki11

@@li-limandragon9287 Considering Jenova is in a mangled state when seen in the Shinra lab, it is up to interpretation if she was in the middle of transforming into a winged creature, or if she had the form of a winged entity before Aerith's ancestors ripped her body apart. Though if Jenova Synthesis is actually her Shinra Lab form but in a completed state, then her fleshy flaps are actually part of the big round thing behind her in Synthesis form.

I feel like Kefka is sort of like the personification of a warped version of Neitzsche taken to an extreme. The gods are dead, he has made his own morality. He is the ubermensche, his final form is as beautiful and as ugly as he himself is, as mankind can be. He is beyond good and evil at that point, he is a force unto himself, and because he is so above everyone he must be cast down.

Most FF Boss transformations mean something.

Honestly, FF6 feels like a game that was better in the context of it's time. It's theatricality and execution are fantastic and there are so many hidden stuff that rewards actually exploring the inner crevices. certain gameplay aspects are very creative, unique and makes the characters stand out from other casts in other ff games. How often do you get to input FGC controls? Music is fantastic of course. Overall there's a lot to this game that really set the series forward and you can tell exactly the kind of influence that But it's definitely aged awkwardly. A lot of the characters are generally likeable, but are ultimately archetypal. And their progression is sort of all over the place. On the one hand, you have Cyan, who actually has a complete character arc revolving around his need to accept the losses of his loved ones. But on the other hand, you have Terra. Whose arc is supposed to be about loving herself, but during so much of the time the game focuses on her, she's either out of commission or off screen. The combat is generally too easy, even without the excessive gamebreakers. Magic completely invalidates the use of most of the casts specials, ultimately making the most efficient gameplay something that makes it less unique. Why wait for Cyan to get to the 7, when you can just cast Ultima or even Flare?
@Msoulwing
@Msoulwing 2 жыл бұрын
Well, if you're not getting all the best relics and level up bonuses, MP is a consideration. Cyan's Bushido frees up his MP to be used for curing and utility spells instead of damage, for example. Of course, the game is rarely hard enough for that to be a problem.
