They’re all thematic edgelords that perfectly reflect Raidens own edgelord tendencies in really smart ways too! Wolf is the literal War Machine given life, Mistral is the child turned soldier through trauma and revenge, Monsoon is the nihilistic justifications cranked to 11, Sundowner is the war monger who loves this shit, Sam has basically given up finding a reason to be here and is only doing things because he’s good at it, and Armstrong is the “noble” guy trying to infiltrate the system to usurp it. They’re all kinda cringe and over the top and it just works.

Hearing Woolie say that Solid Snake dyes his hair brown and seeing it said in Pat's stream makes me need to bring to light that Solid Snake only cut his hair in MGS1 and was never blonde. In the briefing cutscenes he only asks to borrow scissors to cut his hair. He only looks blonde because of the stylistic choice of the cutscenes only having white and brown as the colors, so if they didn't make his hair lighter it would have looked weird. Plus he has brown hair in MG1 and MG2.

Maybe it's just me, but even as a kid I never minded Rose. I always felt the "nagging" of the anniversary was meant to represent the one "real thing" and positive aspect of her and Jack's relationship, but Raiden is too consumed in his fantasy to ever really remember. It's only when he accepts his past and rejects the control of the player that he is able to remember, even to the point of his proposal being unheard by the player. Yeah the spy shit is eh, but there are multiple moments where on replay that show Rose is trying to hint to Raiden the truth, and most of her most infamous moments are due to the player being an ass. Also yeah, Rising does feel like the most the series ever moved forward conceptually, and in many ways I'd argue it's a better direct sequel to 2 than 4 was.

MGS4 makes Rose the worst. Not because she’s annoying, but because what she and Campbell did to Raiden was unnecessary and FUCKED up. There was no need to keep Raiden in the dark that much. It's weird that they're saying that MGS1 has it's own aesthetic/atmosphere when pretty much all the games do. Each one has it's own very distinct vibe. That's why 2 was always my favorite because of the turn of the millennium aesthetics mixed with a strange foreboding atmosphere. But then you got to 3 and it feels so vastly different. Also I fucking love Dead Cell so much. So much so that I commissioned a pic of me drawn in Shinkawa's style for a portrait of me like a member of Dead Cell when they do briefings about them.

It almost disappoints me that MGS4 has five different settings, because it's harder to keep one continuous overwhelming aesthetic across the Middle East, South America, Eastern Europe, Shadow Moses and Outer Haven. Obviously it's still got one with the UI, the urine filter, but you don't have that MGS1 quality of, "it's cold, and dark, until the sun rises at the end."

The idea of "that's just crazy cutscene stuff, it doesn't count" is backwards. The cutscenes are more canon than the gameplay. the cutscenes are really happening, it's gameplay-snake who's not cool enough to cut bees with a knife. I think the The Winds/Desperado have a legit case for number 1 over FOXHOUND, if we count Bladewolf and Armstrong as part of the group especially. The thematic elements of each of them in relation to not only Raidens character but the larger thematic elements of Rising’s story overtake a lot of what FOXHOUND does outside like Mantis and Liquid for me.

I would say The Skulls are what T-1000 is for Terminator 2, they are more of a you are done son vibe

Skull Units are just goons and there's fun ideas with them, but MGS V boss fights do be suffering because of how they don't feel truly worked in how Sandbox system is. I thinking if we can cheese in Peace Walkers, as those are really fun. B&B do be messy because of how theme of trauma is stuck with horniness. I think Cobra Units are really good at being minimalistic and being fun foil to challenge as Snake deals with out mental state.

To anyone who tries to tell me that Twin Snakes is way too over-the-top compared to MGS1, I'll remind you that Snake still fights a Hind alone and on foot, destroys an M1 Abrams with fragmentation grenades, and uses an anti-aircraft missile launcher to kill a giant, shirtless shaman who's hefting around an M61 Vulcan (ammo drum included) like it's nothing. He then goes on to fight a massive walking battle tank, also with nothing but an anti-aircraft missile launcher. All in the same game that people want to pretend is more realistic. Twin Snakes goes hard, and I love it as much as the original MGS1. Metal Gear has ALWAYS been like this, and I wouldn't love any of it as much if it wasn't. Hell, even my least favorite game that I've played, MGR:R, which I don't even consider canon, is still probably one of the coolest and most enjoyable games I've ever seen. Even when I dislike it logically, I'm laughing my ass off at how amazingly ridiculous it is.

I'll stan Dead Cell. Obviously not my favorite unit, but they're fun in a lot of unique ways. Vamp and Fortune have a sweet platonic relationship, each member has at least one moment of interacting with the player or environment outside of boss fights, and they're the least ideologically cohesive "team," putting their own agendas ahead of either side's goals.

I actually prefer the B&B unit as bosses over The Cobra Unit. "storywise" i think they pulled the Boss group that isn't directly connected to Snake and represent living concepts way better than the Cobras and the actual boss fights too. There is a clunkness to MGS3 movement wise that isn't bad when you are playing normally but on bosses it makea them annoyingly harder, not harder but the feeling you wouldn't be taking as much time to defeat Volgin if you moved a little faster.

I think Cobra Unit still shows how sick Big Boss is. He’s a novice going up against his mentor and her boys. Together they’d be unstoppable but she wants to lose so dispatches them to stop Naked Snake. But through wit, combat awareness and prowess, he defeats them all in difficult boss fights. A tense sniper fight v The End, a terrifying fire boss in the dark. All leads up to Big Boss in a cinematic John Woo duel to the death, student versus master. Yes the B and Bs were narratively more symbolic it just felt like jobber, nameless fodder to slow you down. And it’s not saved by the boring monologues about their tragedies

B&B have a presence in the story, and at least are displayed to be much more dangerous than anything Snake has faced before. The Cobras while fine, are largely jokes in terms of threats and significance. Screaming Mantis is the only B&B member I'd throw under the bus, as it's just Psycho Mantis in a memberberry/joke segment. Dead Cell is definitely #2 and Foxhound is easily #1.

Compared to foxhound in mgs1 for example, compared to solid snake they were powerhouses and on a different league, The Cobra Unit on the other hand felt they were on the same level with Naked Snake, which would make sense considering they are all "sons of The Boss" but they didn't feel legendary, they feel like conventional soldiers with a slighly advantage given by their gimmicks. The B&B unit feel like you are fighting a bunch of living weapon and not soldiers, Ragging Raven is introduced by literally commanding a group of drones and causing destruction in an active warzone, i think the only downside of their stories is that you get them by debrin which loses impact, i think they should tell you yourself by reliving their traumas in a severe ptsd attack and debrin just filled the gaps, Crying Wolf was almost like that and it was the most memorable B&B.

Going by what history has shown us, it can exist without Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear Rising Revengeance) but not without Kojima Productions (Metal Gear Survive)

The Metal Gear Solid boss groups gradually got worse as the series went on. FOXHOUND is the best. Dead Cell is pretty good, and they connect to the main story a lot more and way better than any other group, but there's basically only three of them (4 if you include Solidus). They needed one or two more cool characters. The Cobras look interesting and have cool fights but as a group they're kinda lame, and the B&B Corps suck ass.

Disagree on calling the cobras lame. I’ve heard clamoring for years that people want to play as the Boss and the cobras in WWII I’ve heard nothing about wanting to play as FOXHOUND. TBH they’re only memorable because they were first, looking back raven is pretty lame and boring, octopus does nothing, sniper wolf is cool but she was dethroned because the end is so much cooler/weirder than her, mantis is kind of cool but he has the most shallow motivations and I’m going to say it: solidus is way better then liquid and liquid is only memorable because of cam Clarke and the accent

I don't think the B&Bs *_should_* be three-dimensional characters in the first place. Can a story not be better served by bosses who are "tone poems"? MGS4 already has so many characters, it's wise to have the boss team leave the other characters room. There's a kind of magical realist fairytale quality to the four of them that I think is appropriate for the "SENSE" game.

Tbh, Solidus was better than Liquid, Vamp was definitely stronger than Vulcan Raven and also immortal, and Fortune was invulnerable and had a stronger long range weapon than Sniper wolf. Foxhound also has Decoy Octopus and Psycho Mantis but in my opinion they pose less of a problem than Fatman did or could have + there's also the members of Dead Cell that were already dead like Chinaman (martial artist and mystic) and Oldboy (former mentor of big boss).

NO. Snake was not back flipping off missiles. Snake uses special weapons and tactics. He exceled at getting weapons in sight. Using the right weapons and tactics to fit the situation. Kojima was hung up on us military discipline. Details that make a difference. MGS 3 did damage to the series. That's the reason twin snakes is a bunch of anime BS. Japan is good at putting what seems like a fresh spin on an existing idea. Being inspired but given too much time they revert back to super sentai. They can't hold inspiration for long. Sniper wolf just had a wolfs eyesight. Simply having optical cameo alone was lethal. The most powerful person in MGS 1 was psycho mantis. Everybody else was pretty normal. MGS started as a love letter to swat then they basically got bored.

The B&Bs are primo abridged OG Broly vibes. "THEY'RE SO COOL! BUT THEY'RE SO GODDAMN STUPID". I like them, that one trailer introducing them blew my mind as a kid, but I want to like them way more than I actually do like them. Also Fortune is the best member of any of the enemy groups (that isn't Ocelot).

I dunno, I like Desperado more than the Cobras myself. The Cobra unit aren't really characters, they're just concepts, unlike most of the other teams who both embody a concept while also being characters on their own. Some better than others, yeah, but, y'know. Also, I'll be honest, if we could rank them individually? Vulcan Raven is like, down around Dead Cell level.

I feel like the only way the Cobras beat out Desperado is by The Boss herself carrying them. And if the Cobras get to count The Boss, then Desperado gets Armstrong on top of already having Sam, which I think *almost* negates the advantage. If you *don't* count the leaders, I just don't see how Pain, Fear, Fury, End, and Sorrow can stack up against Mistral, Monsoon, Sundowner and Sam (oh, and Khamsin) in terms of depth and stage presence.

I'm a person that doesn't have the love for Metal Gear Solid 3 a lot of people do, mainly because the soundtrack is far more boring and I don't like the survival systems where I basically have to babysit Snake's health no matter what he does. But just as galling is how lame the Cobra Unit is. With the exception of The Boss and The End, none of the Cobra Unit had any impact on me unlike Dead Cell or even Foxhound. There is almost no connection to any of those characters through the game beyond your fights with them and The Sorrow just randomly showing up and saying nothing. All the previous enemies spend time antagonizing you during the game before you get to fight them.

I also don't love MGS3 as much as MGS2, for example, but that's mainly because I find the story so lame and forgettable. I love the survival system and the progression in the game. I agree about the soundtrack, though. MGS2's OST is elite.
