@@Polychromatic8 No, it was fairly accurate. Squaresoft had been met with several failed releases prior to FF1 on the PC-88, MSX, and Famicom, with only King's Knight selling anything worthwhile. They were mostly a publisher and did ports to MSX/PC-88 until famicom. A major move of the studio to Ginza and some ridiculous spending (classic Squaresoft C-suite BS, continues to this day) put them in a precarious position where they needed a solid release to justify their continued existence. They weren't going to go bankrupt, but they needed to decide to remain independent, or return to the more stable but less lucrative job of ports and publishing deals. FF1 was a gamble, and if it had failed Squaresoft would likely not have made it except as a publisher for a few years.

Regardless of financial situation the game could have been called literally anything with a bite-size abbreviation so it's not in the name. It was just called Final Fantasy because that worked and that's my point.

This is why Nintendo will exist for the foreseeable future. They have never cared about a higher stock price for it's own sake, only pulling (MASSIVE) profit and maintaining brand loyalty. They have faults, but they basically appease and wrangle their investors to avoid the trap of infinite growth. They prefer maintaining their foundation and expanding horizontally via the user base (the Wii and Switch did a tremendous job of this). Seeking infinite growth via stock price/valuation is like continuing to add floors to a skyscraper, which slowly becomes unstable as natural elements/market forces act upon its inherently precarious structure. More baffling is when seeing the tower begin to sway under its own weight, American companies in particular have a very stupid habit of bringing in CEOs that are more concerned with adding more floors even at the cost of stability, to the point of stripping lower floors for materials to pad out the upper floors in as ramshackle a manner as possible simply to make number go up. Then as the now weakened structure begins to collapse under its own weight, it's expected that the CEO will take responsibility and fall with the collapsing tower but instead as the support pillars buckle and the walls begin to crumble to dust, investors will hand the CEO a golden parachute and watch them base jump to safety (if they're an insider they jump with him) shouting "It's fine!" as the rest of the ignorant retail investors are left holding the bag as they ride the stock price into the dirt.

So I've been thinking a bit about things close to this topic. Of course, on a strict literal sense, no one industry can have endless growth. The Earth only so big, there's always physical limits. But of course no one's thinking about the term in that sense. What people actually think about is the industry "growing for many long years, it has potential", which is technically true for video games. As more developing countries get more computers and consoles and internet connections, gamers are going to increase. So I think the "long term (decades)" angle of this statement is probably true, because that's a very low resolution statement without details in numbers. What isn't so true however are the actual grow projections that individuals, and individual companies make. No one guy has enough knowledge to do predictions accurately in the long term (even yearly), especially with how fast the world changes nowadays. So when a market buddy makes his projection charts based on a selective amount of information, chances are he's going to be wrong. Then of course what Woolie brought up about the need to impress investors, how other investments ties into how much a game project profits needs to be, that are all piling up the difficulty of doing projections. This also ties into how the longer a game project is, the harder it is to project correctly, which also tells you one of the reasons why the current trend of forever increasing development time is not working well for video games. And then when the CEO wants to brush up that already inaccurate projection just enough that he can brag to the investors how big his PP is, then force the entire company to meet that inaccurate x 1.2 bragging factor projection chart turbo mode expectations, that's where shit truly hits the fan.

I agree with Pat on the point he made about FF towards the end of the podcast. Final Fantasy is (or maybe, more accurately has), become a victim of its own reputation. The series placed itself at the forefront of graphically impressive games since FF7, and that reputation never went away. By that nature, the games almost feel like they have to be these extremely expensive showcases, because that's how people perceive the franchise. I don't even know if you can put the genie back in the bottle in this case. Especially as a franchise owned by a publicly traded company, you're going to have to make that ROI, and the idea of down scaling a numbered entry for the sake of having a more manageable budget seems insanely unlikely. What is Squeenix even supposed to do in this scenario? It's a dire spot to be in. I don't get the impression that FF's peers are running into the same issue. Persona is only getting more popular, and they seem to be doing it without breaking the bank. Like a Dragon is the king of asset reuse, and although I don't think Infinite Wealth was necessarily cheap to make, I can't see that game being even half as expensive as Rebirth. FF still has the benefit of being the #1 JRPG franchise in terms of popularity and recognition, but that's starting to feel more and more tenuous. SE can "fix" this by just. Not making Final Fantasy games (hear me out) They can just make a new series with Final Fantasy summons and animals but not give it the franchise name, since FF changes everything else with every entry holding only those things constant it's not a huge loss. They can, in that way, space out releases for "real" Final Fantasy games (if they ever want to make them again) building more hype due to absence

Interestingly, FF14 is the game that did more or less put that genie back in the bottle, and it has become one of their most profitable ventures since. One of the big things that caused 1.0 to cave under its own weight was that extreme graphical push to be the best, some argue 1.0 still looks better than even modern FF14 (debatable imo), so they scaled things way back in 2.0 and have focused more on art direction to push the graphics than actually trying to compete with the amount of polygons they can fit on screen. And because of that they actually had the resources to focus on making a good game. FF14 is probably an outlier in many ways, since they're not trying to sell people a new modern experience with every expansion, people who are going to buy the next expansion are already invested, but at this point they are probably better off taking the risk on the main series by just releasing a game with "good enough" graphics while still otherwise being a genuinely good game. They may not be able to recapture the same fervor they once did by blowing people away with their cutting edge graphics, but they'll still likely make more profit if they're not spending absurd amounts of money just to keep that reputation.

You absolutely CAN "Put the Genie Back In The Bottle" in this case. The trick is to eschew graphical fidelity in exchange for a distinct and highly stylized art style. Just look at Nintendo games. They're all low quality visually, but they have consistent and stylized presentation that carries it. Meanwhile, we have FF7 Remake/Rebirth where the main cast looks absolutely stunning with highly stylized outfits, but every NPC walking around looks like a generic art asset wearing modern street clothes and the style is so schizophrenic the player gets tonal whiplash every time they see a non-cast member. Then, look at FF9. It ALSO looks like crap, even for its time (compare it to Vagrant Story), but it WORKS because of the art direction and stylization.

2 things on this. 1: You guys are exactly right on the time gap thing. I noticed my nephew just isn't as into the classic mascots as I was when I was growing up, and then I looked back and realized the games he played when he was five or 6 are only now that he's almost 12 thinking about dropping their sequel. When I was growing up, a 6 year dev cycle was, like, a dead franchise. Now it's Tuesday. 2: I believe this will end with those massive price increases you guys mentioned, up to $100 base price. And I know at that point that is completely unaffordable for me, period. $70 is unaffordable, $60 I could BARELY justify for titles I knew were top quality. I know the $10 price hike made big budget titles all but unaffordable for a lot of people I know, I imagine going higher will have compounding effects for that issue. I don't see wages going up any time soon, dropping a cool hundred on frelling "Average Daylife" ain't happening.

I feel the need to point out that the "Final" in Final Fantasy didn't come from it being the last effort the company was doing before bankruptcy, that was merely a coincidence. They originally wanted to name it Fighting Fantasy, but the name was taken, and they wanted to keep the "FF" acronym. So they went with Final just to preserve the acronym. This was explained by Sakaguchi in an interview.

The average gamer is no longer the enthusiast that sinks a lot of time into well made experiences. Now the average gamer is the normie that plays f2p live service slop. Why make stuff for the smaller audience that has actual standards when you can shovel slop to the masses of normies that have almost no standards and will happily eat said slop until the heat death of the universe?

And they don't cost THAT much to make and make gangbusters. If it wasnt for the dinosaurs in the company who don't understand online or emulation, they'd be perfect.
@TyranusRex7217 ай бұрын
Nintendo has survived because they are able to budget their games and have trained their fans/user base to not just accept cartoony/simple graphics, but love them. That dramatically cuts down on money. Hell, most Nintendo games will have like, maybe two cutscenes. And they are like in engine too. Nintendo does a lot of shitty stuff, but at least they are smart with their money. We saw in the Insomniac leaks that Spider-Man 2 cost over $300 million to make it had to sell something like 8 million units to BREAK EVEN! Thankfully, it sold like 10 million, but having to sell 8 million just to break even is unsustainable, especially in a single player game that launches at full price on a single platform. And we know Wolverine is going to cost even more than that. Sony and Square have put themselves in this situation where they have trained their fanbase to expect these massive, ultra cinematic and expensive games and that is starting to backfire on them really hard. For all their stupid mistakes Microsoft does (mainly talking too damn much) they are moving all their games into Unreal Engine 5. Everyone working on the same engine and sharing info and assets is super smart and will cut down on costs. Now if only they could better manage their damn games. But we have absolutely seen the consequences of not just infinite growth, but how that interacts with AAA games. The amount of money you have to put in these games and then expect them to make money back hand over fist upon release is not sustainable. And seeing a bunch of these companies try to get into GASS games and failing, is hurting them even more. God help Sony with Concord as they try to release that with Marvel Rivals and Valve's new game coming out at like the same time. Sony sank a ton of money into that game and I have the feeling it is dead on arrival. Moral of the story: Budget your games properly and share/reuse assets and engines. Saves a lot of time and money.

That Cliffy B idea that there's only enough room for 2-3 of a thing in an industry is actually a classic unnatural law of business. I think it was a Michael Porter thing, originally. The insight is that any industry can sustain a max of 2-3 main competitors. Use case for it is predicting shakeups (a bunch of companies going out of business). When you see more than 2-3 companies competing for the same customers with the same/similar products, you can count on one or more of them failing in the near term.

Imagine floating in space and having nothing close to you that has any mass, you just go in one direction forever, of course that doesn't work in finance since production and space is finite. You can mainly thank the US government and the governments that followed suit to abolish the gold standard for that, and the ridiculous high inflation caused by mass printing money (which in turn makes companies focus only on the short term, since in the long term they may just lose money anyway) for all the unsustainable growth shenanigans we have.
