the r slur will always carry extreme negativity. people often call their families and friends that slur when they are being ‘stupid’ or acting a certain way. however, when it comes to that word, there’s no way to use it without it being an insult. you can’t just walk up to a friend, dab them up, and call them that. it’s always ‘you’re being ___’ or ‘fuck, man you’re acting so ___’. this word cannot even be reclaimed by our own community. have you ever seen any other ‘reclaimed slur’ used exclusively as an insult? no. it’s always used to dehumanize, diminish, and poke fun at the person it’s directed at. just because you’re not using it against the marginalized group directly and only towards friends doesn’t change the fact that you’re perpetuating a slur that is used to describe my community in a negative way. this just proves that you think of disabled people as stupid. as someone who is disabled and autistic, i find it sickening to watch non-disabled people dismiss the discomfort this slur causes by labeling those who oppose its use as ‘woke blue-haired people.’ using the slur in this day and age unequivocally marks you as an ableist. people need to recognize the harm it inflicts and eliminate it from their vocabulary entirely. no matter how you grew or how it was used in your environment, it’s usage perpetuates harmful stereotypes and demeans an entire community. it’s crucial to understand that language shapes our perceptions and attitudes. using the slur reinforces negative stereotypes about disabled individuals, suggesting that we are leas intelligent or capable. this not only hurts individuals but also perpetuates systemic discrimination and exclusion. if you truly care about being respectful and inclusive, it’s time to stop using the word and calling those out who continues to use it.
