I'm not much of a gamer, but analog switches would seem very nifty for other uses, e.g., pressing A all the way down sends CTRL + A, Page Down all the way down sends END, thus allowing the actual END key to be reassigned elsewhere, etc. I'm grateful that there are people nowadays pushing the boundaries of what's possible with keyboards. Thanks again Chyrosran22!
@idklike32105 жыл бұрын
That would need switches with more travel distance imo. But there could be a possible solution. PS: this could work out with some tweaking of the settings and the clicky switches

4:34 It's pretty sad that nowadays even the most expensive "gaming" keyboards have laser ablated ABS caps, if Chinese can make decent doubleshot/dyesub PBT caps for cheap, why can't such caps be used in premium board? Overall, this keyboard is still more interesting than a dozen of overpriced Cherry MX boards with full RGB.
@Wooting6 жыл бұрын
I can answer that issue. Backlight + legends issue. Making the molds for double-shot keycaps is very expensive, then the Chinese manufacturers that own one and make them have extremely ugly "gamery" or fat legends. The option for backlight pbt double shot is very very limited. If the keyboard has backlight, lazer or dyesub isn't going to help. I would of loved to have doubleshot PBT keycaps but not at the cost of terrible design. Then rather lower down the price so you have more budget to buy a decent set :)
@ManWithBeard19906 жыл бұрын
True. Unfortunately it's hard to find a set of caps with a decent font.

It uses standard protocols, so input works ... but almost no settings are on the keyboard itself. You can't even set the ugly backlighting to be permanently off! It requires Wootility, which is x86-64 only. They were slow to release the Linux version so I haven't bothered to test it yet. Hopefully someone who has will fill in below.
@0LoneTech6 жыл бұрын
It works perfectly well, and the Wootility is built with a Chromium derived framework that is also available for Linux; I haven't tested that personally yet. I've experimentally used its auxiliary fully analog reports, which IIRC provides 32 key rollover or so, but there's no normal driver for that. With that mode it's even more flexible than the gamepad and DKS modes, as you could implement any profile in software.

Seriously, I cannot understand why analog keyboards aren't ' a thing ' exactly. Even though I like controllers as well, Kb & Ms were always my number one option no matter the game. Personally I've never had problems adjusting to any driving game on PC, I wasn't even adjusting honestly, it all comes naturally, but playing any kind of shooter on consoles, with auto aim off, well, it can be tricky to say at least. I was hugely disappointed when I first heard Sony was dropping their analog face buttons due to the lack of interest in implementing such a fine feature by developers on Playstation 4. Seriously, when done and implemented correctly, analog keys can really amplify your gaming experience and bring tons of fine nuances to it. I'm kinda happy to see that it sparks some interest among the manufacturers finally.

other perks which makes this gem even more of a masterpiece: actually the servicing and modding is relatively easy and it is encouraged by the folks at wooting. if you remove all the keycaps and the switches bam you'll find the screws. Undo them and the top lid can be popped out from its frame. It's not glued in there but still a very tight fit. If you extract the pcb you'll find that the bottom part is mostly just hollow compartments so you can fill it up with for example hot glue to make it more stable and quiter. second: apart from the keyboard / xinput / directinput devices it has a 4th more generic HID device which has a beatiful simple report format: for each key you can get a pair of bytes where first byte is the actual keycode and the second is the analogue pressure (0-255) regardless which mode you're inside. this means you can even use it in way more extensively than a joystick or gamepad, for instance I built a midi keyboard emulator with it with velocity and aftertouch support. this is a seriously good product and the team behind it are super helpful on discord.

Well as a long term console gamer (not peasant) I do think controllers have their place. Sure the mouse and keyboard are far superior in many respects but I cannot see it for certain games and certain game genres. Platformers, fighting games, racing games and some action games in my opinion do better on a controller. Especially platfomers, fighting games and racing games, i have tried M&K for them but i really cant do it. The controller is far better in my mind. From platforming accruracy in games like Sonic and Mario To pulling off special moves in street fighter To making turns in Drift 2 and Project cars.... sorry all of those feel so sloppy on a keyboard and mouse to me.
@Chyrosran226 жыл бұрын
Interesting you should say that. Fighting games in particular are a great example of where I WOULD use a keyboard. Because you can use all your fingers at the same time, you can hit keys MUCH faster in succession, and special moves can be executed more unambiguously with four-directional input (e.g. F,D,F is a precise, three-button move, not a zone of movements on a controller). For platformers I'm a bit on the fence. Racing games are probably much better with a controller, but I still play a lot better with keyboard, just because I'm so used to them and not used to controllers xD .
@themadoneplays78426 жыл бұрын
It depends, for Mortal Kombat Keyboard is fine actually Street fighter? Not so much in my opinion. Cool. You think you could get your hands on the clicky switch? I wonder how smooth that one is. Also, can you make it so that bottoming out a key sends ONLY whatever you set that analog value to? Or does it have to send a signal for every analog value you cross on the way, no matter how fast? Imagine typing with keys that send either normal signal (no click) or a macro with a modifier (click).
@Chyrosran226 жыл бұрын
I have a few clicky switches. They are very smooth, though that should be less of a consideration with clicky switches. I showed them in my Teardown video. The DKS feature sends one pre-programmed signal at a specific actuation point and another signal at another point.

As soon as you started talking about double key strokes, I thought of UT dashes, lol. Shame they didn't work. I guess it has something to do with how the game processes key press and release events. It may be because the halfway A isn't released when A+A is sent on the bottom. I'm not really sure what is the exact series of events the driver is sending and what form the game is receiving them in. One test you could try to do is to bind, say, B as the halfway keystroke and A+A as the bottom keystroke and see how that behaves.

The reason why the steam controller list names seige is because when using a steam controller you only use the mouse and gamepad not the buttons on the mouse. Looking around in games with a steam controller is sometimes a lot easier if bound to the mouse and allows for cool things like binding it to the gyro :)

Great review. I really wish there was a way to "wire" one yourself, so you could make something like "Plank" with them. Are the settings stored in the on-board memory, or do you have to actually have the configuration app open? The latter would be pretty bad for Linux/Mac/etc. compatibility.
@Chyrosran226 жыл бұрын
Nope, you don't need to have the app open at all, it's saved to the keyboard, thankfully.

Re: macros: did you try binding the UT macro for dash to A up wait 0.05 a down wait 0.05 a up? You were probably accidentally double-registering A

I wonder if you could review that wild Gamecube controller that had a keyboard in it. Apparently it was intended for use with Phantasy Star Online.

The Wooting One seems to be less available nowadays - even the Wooting store itself doesn't have it at the moment - but fortunately Informatique (Dutch IT store) seems to have them still. Which means I'm typing this on a brand new one with ultra-smooth red switches. Yay :) Hopefully they are able to restock.

I'm building my first real gaming PC soon, and I'm looking around for a keyboard for it (I'm on a budget, so I really just want one keyboard). Do you think this is a good choice for me? I was going to go with a Ace Pad Tech Hall Effect keyboard, but this video's made me wonder. I'm slightly worried that it'll require a ton of fidgeting with all my games and stuff, and I'll have to tweak settings every time I go to play a different game. Is that accurate? If I want to turn off the gamepad/Xbox/mouse input that comes from the keyboard, can I, and just make it a plain old digital keyboard, or is there no setting for that?
@Wooting6 жыл бұрын
You can turn off all the controller stuff in the general settings. It can always work like a generic ol' keyboard.
@calvinreeder75806 жыл бұрын
Wooting Oh really? Awesome! I don't see any reason you pick the Hall Effect keyboard over this, then. Thanks!

This removable switch (without soldering) feature is one of the best things in a mechanical keyboard for me. Anyone knows any cheaper mechanical keyboards with this feature?

The mass drop alt and ctrls are hot swap. I noticed one assembly on Banggood that is hot swappable for about 55 bucks if I remember, but it’s just the assembly without switches or caps.

So, should I buy this instead of a K95 from Corsair? They cost about the same, but the difference mainly for me, is that eventually I have to buy a keycap set for my country since Wooting only offers UK and German layouts for ISO.

can you use those switches in other brand keyboards? Would love to have this flaretech black switches on the Keychron K6. Hopefully it retains the "analog" ability if possible to install on other optical keyboards

why do you hate cs:go? because of the state that it's in now, or did you dislike it from the beginning? just curious, your vids are dank.
@Architector_46 жыл бұрын
For the analysis of how well it works in CS:GO, you can check this video out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4ixemCca7Z3hrM Also this same video's description features a big list of games that work and don't work with this keyboard(and not just combined inputs in general), while also listing if it works 100% or if there are problems. And yes, it does mention Rainbow Six Siege's problem, as well as a way to work around it.

I burrowed some time for review, what I feel was doped cherry. But I still prefer alps unless it has more flaws than optoelectric switch, because key feel is far tastier than cherry type in all categories; linear, clicky, tactile.
@BrightSpark3 жыл бұрын
03:55 Erm... clicky analogue keys? Now I need to know how that works - not from a technical standpoint, but from a handling one. From the top of my head, I can only think of two options: Either the analogue range exists only *above* the click - similiar to the GameCube's triggers - or the analogue nature only reveals itself *after* the click, so it's less how far you press it down, and more how hard you press it. That being said, I know *nothing* about analogue keys, so I am talking entirely out of my arse here.

Can tou get around the gamepad limitatin by somehow making the computer think that the mouse inputs are actually coming from the gamepad, instead of the mouse? Like have the keyboard driver capture the mouse inputs?

12:27 Could this double-keystroke feature be useful for touch typists, or do you always register both the light travel and then the heavy travel key presses?
@Chyrosran226 жыл бұрын
You can define separate points in the travel at which both events occur. With the stock springs, and using the linear switches, it's very easy to bottom out when typing, though.

Cable routing slots might affect profit. Since complex molds wear out faster.
@Chyrosran226 жыл бұрын
This is an interesting point, but I dare say a mould will not wear out prohibitively expensively on a mechanical-keyboard-budget keyboard with a few simple gulleys in it.

topre should be able to sense analog differences (the new realforce rgb can configure actuation depth) however i dont think there is any software to support actual analog sensing

If you only use it as a linear keyboard with digital input and forget about the analog gamepad gimmick, will it be compatible with all games?
@zenithseeker76 жыл бұрын
You could try disabling the keyboard and mouse part of the keyboard in device manager. That could help with some of the compatibility issues.
@Chyrosran226 жыл бұрын
No, any compatibility issues really just stem from the game being incompatible with the types of input it's getting, not really from the devices interfering. It's a game-side thing, not a hardware-side one.
@gsilva2204 жыл бұрын
An idea for them: Put an USB port in it to take the mouse movement as the right analog stick of the controller part.
@ffmfg6 жыл бұрын
question: if I only want the keyboard with completely customizable actuation profiles etc. can I completely disable gamepad devices so problematic games wouldn't have multiple controller issues?
