@@tbishop4961 wootz, as far as I know is a steel but it's make up and creation process is unknown. It's is quite flexible, sturdy, and holds an edge very well, it's given the name Damascus for which it was known or thought to come from. Modern Damascus is simply patern welded steel or with other metals for a unique look.

Al Pendray and Dr Verhoeven rediscovered the method for recreating traditional wootz steel back in the 90s. The secret was a very small vanadium content that caused carbides to align during the forging and tempering process. There is even a magazine that featured his recipe.

Beautiful and elegant knife, but historically not a viking sax. This is a british saxon seax. The broken back is typical for the saxon knives. Knives of this type were typically taken as loot on the British Islands. A typical viking sax would have either leafshaped or upswung tip. Just info, no critique of your knife making skills or to deduct from the beauty of this knife.

I was wondering if the nails were stainless, monel or bronze. All would be soft. The sparks must have been from the iron powder added. I have some silicone bronze that I have been thinking of using, very hard and sharp for bronze.

Товарищь все время делает марганцевую сталь. Не удивительно что она молотом не куется, только гидравликой. С тем же успехом можно ножи делать из траков от гусеничной техники, но это никто не практикует в виду плохих характеристик этой стали для режущего инструмента. К стати говоря, о высоком содержании марганца говорит искра во время наждачной обработки, имеет красный звет и не низкую плотность потока.

Considering you can melt steel in a crucible, you could have saved yourself a shit ton of trouble on that brass piece by just pouring it into a simple sand mold. No milling, filing, or stipling
